DENVER – Volaris' first nonstop flight from Denver to Chihuahua took off from DIA Saturday – five days after the airline's inaugural nonstop flight from the Mile High City to Guadalajara.

"As with the recent addition of the Guadalajara route, we hope passengers will be equally as receptive to Volaris' new nonstop service to Chihuahua," Kim Day, CEO of Denver International Airport, said in a news release.

The flight leaves on Saturdays. The plane arrives at DIA at 11:20 a.m. and departs for Chihuahua at 12:45 p.m., according to a news release.

Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena says the goal of the new flights is to offer better options for Colorado's large Mexican community.

"We aim to do this safely and efficiently, without them ever having to resort to 10-hour shuttles by bus," he said in a news release.

Volaris began nonstop service from Denver to Benito Juarez International Airport in December 2012, and says passenger traffic has grown nearly every month since.

The number of nonstop international travel destinations leaving DIA has grown by 30 percent since 2011, according to a news release from the airport.

Think to the last news story you heard about Mexico, and it probably involved the heated debate over immigration reform in the United States or the Mexico's struggle against drug cartels.

And now, more than ever, the media is painting a grim picture of the multi-faceted crisis brewing at the U.S.-Mexico border, where a recent surge in undocumented, unaccompanied children are moving between the two countries at a rate of more than 1,000 per week. President Barack Obama has called it a "humanitarian crisis," and all eyes are on the White House as the government decides its next move.

The images pieced together in the news — of corruption, poverty, violence and crime — are grim, but they don't capture the full, textured reality of life in Mexico. As there are approximately 33.7 million Mexican-Americans living in the United States today, it is worth thinking more about what the country looks like beyond the headlines.

Here are some photos that show a side to Mexico that we don't usually see in the media:

1. It has 300 spoken languages.

001

Not only does Mexico have the largest Spanish-speaking population in the world, it is also home to over 10 million people who speak an indigenous language. Some of the languages are at risk of becoming extinct.

Approximately 68 legally valid linguistic groups and 364 specific varieties of indigenous languages are spoken in Mexico. How many languages do you know?

2. It has some of the world's best musical festivals.

002

Since 1998, Vive Latino has been one of the most important Latino, Spanish and Indie music festivals in the world. This year's festival in Mexico City hosted over 173 bands in four days.

3. Impressive museums showcase the rich history.

003

From a museum of Mexican railroads to its own wax museum to a whole establishment dedicated to Mexican toys throughout history, Mexico is home to hundreds of specialty museums. The National Museum of Anthropology is its most visited, boasting artifacts from Mayan civilizations and an incredible Aztec calendar stone. Mexico's almost perfect weather allows for the museum to be partly outdoors with gorgeous gardens and outdoor exhibits.

4. It is home to several "Ring of Fire" volcanoes.

004

Scattered across Mexico are breathtaking volcanoes, some of which are active. The volcanic belt, Sierra Nevada, which is part of the "Ring of Fire," spans across Mexico. Its highest peaks have snow all year round and are visible to local residents during clear weather.

5. It is seeing a huge car boom.

005

By the end of next year, Mexico is expected to overtake Japan and Canada as America's No. 1 source of imported cars. The manufacturing of cars in Mexico has exploded over the past few years, and its output is expected to rise 50% by 2019.

6. It is home to some incredible ancient murals.

006

Mexico has a history with murals that goes back to ancient civilizations. The murals movement in Mexico was born in the 1920s after the Mexican revolution as a way to show that art is for the public, and is not just empty output. The murals have historically been collective projects and a way for a group of artists to bring together political and cultural art. It even brought Secretary of State John Kerry to take a tour of the Diego Rivera murals of the National Palace in Mexico City.

7. It invented the coolest way to wrestle.

007

Lucha Libre is a type of Mexican wrestling with bright masks covering the fighters' faces. It can also be characterized by "high-flying maneuvers." Flying fighters? Sign us up.

8. It has a thriving fashion industry.

008

Mexico's fashion week is a highly anticipated event for fashion designers internationally, even if it is smaller than the others. This year featured 22 collections, which some reviewers called less trend-driven and more authentic than collections shown at larger fashion weeks such as New York and London.

9. It has a fast-growing environmental movement.

009

Cancun held the UN Climate Change Summit in 2010, where thousands of protesters from around the world marched for new climate change policy. Protesters even donned famous faces to get their point across. Mexico's president introduced climate change legislation in 2012, but the effects have shown to be less than satisfactory due to lack of funding and lack of a national climate change system.

The Dutch airline that celebrated The Netherlands win over Mexico with a tweet that said, "Adios Amigos" -- coupled with a stereotypical pic of a man in sombrero -- is now apologizing.

KLM has been under fire ever since the airline posted the message Sunday -- which featured an image of a mustached man in a poncho and a sombrero next to a sign that said, "Departures."

The tweet pissed off a TON of people -- including actor Gael García Bernal who blasted the airline on Twitter ... saying, "I’m never flying your s**tty airline again. F**k you big time."

Now, the airline has finally responded ... issuing a statement that says, "We realize that our posts on Twitter and Facebook following the match triggered many emotional replies. We emphasize that it was never our intention to hurt anyone's feelings."

"In the best of sportsmanship, KLM apologizes to those who feel offended. In respect of the many reactions we received we decided to remove the posts."

For the record, KLM also issued the statement en Espanol.

Tikal mayan ruins 2009

The southern Mexico Mayan ruins of Calakmul have become the country's first site to receive the "mixed" World Heritage designation from the United Nations.

The designation cites both the pyramids of the ancient city-state and hundreds of thousands of acres of well-preserved tropical forest that surrounds them.

But authorities say the heritage designation for another Mexican site, the "floating gardens" of Xochimilco, could be in danger.

The man-made islands created by the Aztecs have been hit by pollution and urban sprawl, endangering the endemic salamanders known as axolotls.

The director of the country's National Institute of Anthropology and History says there is a plan to rescue Xochimilco.

But Teresa Franco said Wednesday that it could be at risk "if quick and efficient action isn't taken."

Kim Kardashian goes to the Riviera Nayarit yearly. Christina Aguilera got engaged there. And on the visit I finished last week, I shared the sands with the Presidents of Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Columbia and Mexico. (OK, I never actually saw any of them in their speedos and bikinis, but they were gathering in the town of Punta de Mita for a high-stakes meeting of the Pacific Alliance).

Yet ask the average North American where Nayarit is, and they’ll likely guess Africa. And that may be part of the reason you want to vacation here and do so soon.

The Riviera Nayarit is a 192-mile band of sand that’s closely backed by the Sierra Nevada mountains, a fact that keeps overdevelopment in check (the land behind the beach is often just too steep for skyscraping multinational hotels). Some 23 tidy little beach communities are strung along the sea, each cuter than the next. The sands tend to be a golden yellow, the seas teeming with critters (this is a major whale shark and whale watching destination come winter) and the people welcoming.

Over the next five weeks, I’ll post about my experiences on the Riviera Nayarit, one a week, so this column doesn’t get shanghaied by one small corner of the globe. I hope you’ll enjoy this series and I think you’ll be struck, as I was, by the variety of experiences you can have here. Along with this blog, I’ve posted a slideshow about the area (please click here for that).

mlt vacations 2

TWINSIGHTLOGOCultural tours are catching on on Mexico’s Pacific coast, according to MLT Vacations, which markets Delta Vacations and Aeromexico Vacations and for the first time has put out a Top 10 list of its best-selling cultural tours in Mexico.

Pacific destinations in the operator’s list include Los Cabos, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.

Two other programs highlight Mexico City’s famous shrines and historical sites, and the other five tours focus on excursions in the Cancun area, specifically to Chichen-Itza, the Coba GayNagleMyersMaya Village, Isla Contoy, Cozumel and Tulum/Akumal.

“Cancun typically dominates our [cultural] tour and excursion sales, so it’s exciting to see destinations along Mexico’s west coast and its colonial cities expanding and making our top 10 list,” said John Caldwell, MLT Vacations’ president.

Not quite making the list, which is based on 2013 sales data, but growing year over year as well is the Cuernavaca and Taxco tour in Mexico City and the Cenote Ikkil swimming experience available with vacation packages to Merida.

“Travelers are not leaving the beach behind, but they are looking to add more diverse, enriching and immersive cultural experiences to their vacations,” said Caldwell.

Sales of all types of tours throughout Mexico have increased for MLT Vacations, according to Caldwell. Since 2011, sales of cultural tours have grown 20%.

Important update 15:34 UTC : Unfortunately we have to report that a third person was killed in Guatemala. This brings the total number of fatalities so far on 4 (3 Guatemala and 1 in Mexico)

Update 15:31 UTC : An ER reader has send us the following remark :
The USGS list of cities affected by the July 7, 2014 Mexico quake gives the erroneous impression that only villages were affected. Tapacula Municipality covers the quake epicenter area and Tapacula city proper is within the epicenter area. It has a population of over a quarter million. Having been there many times, I can say many parts of the city are vulnerable.

Update 15:20 UTC : a Prensa Libre collection of damage images from the earthquake

Screen-Shot-2014-07-07-at-17.19.12

Update 15:15 UTC : Governor of Chiapas Mexico report :1 person killed in Huixtla and a lot of damage

Guatemala :
Raul Hernandez, a spokesman for fire services in Guatemala, said that in the region of San Marcos his unit had reports of 30 houses damaged and two people dead.
Update 14:34 UTC: People should be aware of potentially dangerous aftershocks in the region for the next hours and days.

Update 14:23 UTC: There are 3 confirmed deaths so far in Guatemala, and one death in Mexico. Also there are reported 21 injured persons. A preliminary statement shows that 48 houses collapsed in San Marcos, Guatemala. The authorities are working on unblocking some access routes in the region affected by landslides.

Update 13:36 UTC: The Ministry of Education from Guatemala decided to suspend classes in the nearby places: Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Totonicapán, Quetzaltenango y Sololá, the most affected by the earthquake.

Update 12:47 UTC : A revised shaking map from USGS gives some better results than the initial one below, but still looks very bad for the coastal areas. This map is based on M6.9 at a depth of 60 km.

Update 12:44 UTC : Damage in the airport building of Tapachula, Mexico

aae

Update 12:36 UTC – The situation is VERY UNCLEAR at this moment. The damage reports we are getting are coming from San Marcos, BUT SanMarcos is at least 50 km away from the epicenter. We are anxiously waiting for reports from the direct epicenter area.
The Guatemalan press reports (unfortunately) 2 fatalities at this moment, many more injured. (we are still searching for confirmation of the fatalities – soon after an earthquake the situation can be explained as very chaotic)
Update 12:31 UTC : An additional picture showing the strength of the earthquake in SanMarcos, Guatemala. Solala also reports damage and injuries.

ai

IPMORTANT UPDATE 12:02 UTC : We have to change our expectations dramatically as the initial depth of the hypocenter has been changed in the meanwhile from 33 km to 92 km ! Thats a world of difference. Damage expectations will remain but we can scrap horror from our initial wording horror scenario.

Update 11:50 UTC : Max Wyss , the theoretical injuries/fatalities engine gives hopeful numbers : 0 to 600 wounded and 0 to 10 fatalities.

Update 11:45 UTC : A Horror shaking scenario has been reported by USGS shakemap – This means for sure a lot of damage at least, lets hope no injuries or fatalities – A MMI VII is very strong shaking and may be damaging. The earthquake type at the other hand is a good one (subduction earthquake) which give mainly an up/down movement (transform earthquakes are far more shallower and are giving a mainly horizontal movement)

(MEXICO CITY) — A magnitude-7.1 earthquake on the Pacific Coast has jolted a wide area of southern Mexico and Central America.

At least 2 people have been killed after a powerful 7.1-magnitude quake struck the southern Mexican state of Chiapas and neighboring Guatemala.

The earthquake struck 14km offshore from the city of Mazatan in Mexico, but strong tremors were felt across the border in Guatemala. Significant damages were reported in the region of San Marcos in Guatemala where the quake damaged buildings and triggered landslides.

"This quake was pretty strong. There are houses destroyed," Luis Rivera, governor of the San Marcos region, told Reuters. A spokesperson from the local emergency services said two people had been reported dead in the area.

Mexicans and Guatemalans alike voiced their reaction to the earthquake on Twitter, with some people claiming the quake was felt as far south as El Salvador.

Mexico is located atop three large tectonic plates and is one of the world's most seismically-active regions. The last powerful quake struck the region in May, 303km from the popular beach resort of Puerto Vallarta.

The country has a long history of destructive earthquakes. In 1985, more than 9,500 people were killed in Mexico City after an 8.1 earthquake hit the region.

Election Day in Nayarit will be Sunday July 6th and sales of alcohol both retail and restaurant is prohibited between midnight Friday and Sunday.  This means, if you wish to imbibe over the weekend, you will have to do a bit of provisioning.  OR, you can cross the Ameca River into Jalisco, where there are no elections this weekend.  However, don't be stupid and drink there and drive back to Nayarit because the police (and specifically the Transito) are not stupid and will have additional sobriety check points set up.  You do NOT want to be pulled over for a DUI.  Trust us, NOT WORTH IT.

Do some planning, go on the wagon, whatever.  Be advised.

“Working at YaleGlobal Online has given us the opportunity to apply what we’ve learned [in the classroom] to the real world. We have been challenged to deliver information in a way that is accessible to a wider audience,” said Adrian Trulin, a senior studying International Relations at Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec) in Mexico City. Trulin is one of six students who were invited to Yale to intern with YaleGlobal Online for four weeks this summer.

Led by Professor Luisa Parraguez of the Global Studies Department at Tec de Monterrey, the students’ objective was to increase the amount and quality of the Latin American and Spanish-language content published on the website. They selected relevant news items dealing with Globalization and Global Governance and developed half-page executive summaries or “decks.” Examples include synopses of a New York Times article on natural gas and a Foreign Policy in Focus piece on trade between China and Latin America.

YaleGlobal Online, a publication of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale, is a free open site dedicated to exploring the implications of globalization. It draws from the Yale community and beyond, using scholarship from other universities and public- and private- sector experts from around the world. This is the second collaboration between Tec and YaleGlobal – the first research internship was established in 2013.

“[This year’s students] proved to be as dedicated and resourceful researchers as their predecessors… showing a remarkable level of maturity and understanding of our complex world,” said Nayan Chanda, Director and Editor-in-Chief of YaleGlobal Online. “The excellent decks they wrote stand as testimony to their valuable contributions.”

In addition to their daily tasks with YaleGlobal Online, the six students co-authored an academic essay on the topic of energy security in North America with Dr. Parraguez. They were also given the opportunity to write individual research essays for publication.

Dr. Parraguez feels that the program has strengthened ties between Tec de Monterrey and Yale and hopes it will continue to expand into future projects. She says the experience has been “most rewarding,” and her students agree. “It has been an honor to be here at Yale and writing for YaleGlobal Online for the summer. The hands-on training in journalism has been invaluable,” said senior Maria Heidelberg Arizmendi.

Yale and Tec began collaborating in 2005, with a program that brought outstanding Mexican students to Yale to study for a summer. Since then, it has expanded to include exchange and internship programs, alumni events, and an International Liaison Office for Tec in New Haven directed by David Huerta. To learn about the partnership, please visit Tecnológico de Monterrey and Yale.
