Cultural tours are catching on on Mexico’s Pacific coast, according to MLT Vacations, which markets Delta Vacations and Aeromexico Vacations and for the first time has put out a Top 10 list of its best-selling cultural tours in Mexico.
Pacific destinations in the operator’s list include Los Cabos, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.
Two other programs highlight Mexico City’s famous shrines and historical sites, and the other five tours focus on excursions in the Cancun area, specifically to Chichen-Itza, the Coba
Maya Village, Isla Contoy, Cozumel and Tulum/Akumal.
“Cancun typically dominates our [cultural] tour and excursion sales, so it’s exciting to see destinations along Mexico’s west coast and its colonial cities expanding and making our top 10 list,” said John Caldwell, MLT Vacations’ president.
Not quite making the list, which is based on 2013 sales data, but growing year over year as well is the Cuernavaca and Taxco tour in Mexico City and the Cenote Ikkil swimming experience available with vacation packages to Merida.
“Travelers are not leaving the beach behind, but they are looking to add more diverse, enriching and immersive cultural experiences to their vacations,” said Caldwell.
Sales of all types of tours throughout Mexico have increased for MLT Vacations, according to Caldwell. Since 2011, sales of cultural tours have grown 20%.
