Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit, or MEXorc, the international that began in the 60’s, will return to Puerto Vallarta on March 23 to 29, 2014 when the participants of the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Yacht Race come to the shores of the Mexican Pacific Coast destination.

Among the many different events that are held in Mexico’s Pacific Treasure is the 2nd National APEN All Stars Riviera Nayarit Championship this March 8-9, a national competition that will showcase the best cheerleaders in Mexico.

Sayulita is preparing to receive surf lovers to celebrate the 5th edition of Punta Sayulita’s Longboard & SUP Classic, which will gather more than 60 national and international competitors of longboard and stand up paddle, who will demonstrate their abilities by challenging the ocean waves to take the championship title. It will be held from March 7th through 9th at Punta Sayulita beachfront.

This is the North American supremacy tournament held among teams from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Prizes for the holes-in-one include a Honda CR-V and a golf cart.

The 2nd CANAMEX Flamingos Riviera Nayarit Cup will take place on March 8, 2014 on the greens at the Flamingos Golf Club.

The tournament seeks to establish supremacy in North America for amateur golfers; it’s an international competition where teams from Mexico, Canada and the United States vie to win the top spot for their respective country.

The three teams will consist of 40 golfers for a total of 120 participants. They will have approximately 6 hours to finalize three 9-hole formats, alternate shots, best ball and Match Play or Best Score.

During their tour the players can choose hole-in-one prizes that include a Honda CR-V for Hole 6 or a Golf Cart for Hole 8, as well as several prizes for the Oh Yes, including golf clubs and other articles. There will also be a final raffle at the end for a slew of gift certificates.

The foreign teams consist of about 50 percent residents and 50 percent visitors who flew in just for the tournament.

Steve Trace, co-captain for the Canadian team has teed off on greens in all three countries and spends half of his year in Bucerías because he loves the regional golf courses.

“There are fantastic golf courses here, we play at least three times a week. We love this place. This tournament is a great challenge and Flamingos has a beautiful course,” said Trace.

Mike Nord, captain of the U.S. team, mentioned he’s played all the courses in both the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta, but that his favorite was Flamingos for its beautiful scenery and level of difficulty.

“The wildlife, the plants, the vegetation is unique. We rotate the players, so this tournament definitely helps us to make new friends within all three countries,” said Nord. “It’s the perfect place to socialize.”

The Riviera Nayarit is also a place with a perfect climate that allows golfers to play year round while the greens in the States are under several feet of snow, and Nord was very grateful for this country’s blessings.

“This is a golfer’s paradise, an ideal spot for the game. Right now it’s raining, cold, there’s ice and snow (in the U.S.), yet here you wake up every morning with a beautiful golf course ready to go. Like I mentioned before, I love Flamingos, I love to play here and I’m always ready to come back and play again,” he ended.

The Riviera Nayarit will host this international tournament with an expected two thousand participants and 400 boats; hotel occupation is expected to exceed 90%.

Thanks to the excellent results obtained in 2010 and 2012, as well as the outstanding conditions available for the practice of aquatic and nautical sports, the Riviera Nayarit will once again host the Mexico Cup Regatta for a third time during its 2014 edition.

The Riviera Nayarit presents the perfect conditions for the tournament to take place. According to Roberto Sandoval, Governor of Nayarit: “The Mexico Cup Regatta began as an itinerant event until it arrived at the Riviera Nayarit—and then it was here to stay.”

Approximately two thousand participants and 400 boats will be competing in the Bay of Banderas from March 16-30, each looking to place among the best sailors in the world.

There will be three main hosts for the competitions: the Ocean Class, J24 and Windsurf will take place at the Marina Riviera Nayarit in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle; the Laser Class, Optimist and Club 420 will take place at the Vallarta Yacht Club in Nuevo Vallarta; and the Kiteboard Class will take place in Bucerías.

Some of the participants present at the Regatta to show off their abilities include Sean Farley, world Kitesurf champion; as well as Demita Vega and David Mier y Terán, silver and bronze medal winners in their respective Windsurf categories during the Pan American Games of 2011.

Mexico’s Secretary of the Navy (Semar) will participate in the 2014 edition with 120 sailors distributed among different categories. There will also be continuous security by air, land and sea during the event to guarantee the safety of both the participants and the visitors.

This international tournament will not only exhibit a high level of competition and sportsmanship but will also help promote the Riviera Nayarit and create income for the destination, as hotel occupancy is expected to exceed 90% during those days.

The event also stimulates the regional economy and allows the destination to display its hotel infrastructure.

There are over 20 surf spots in this region; most are beach breaks and rocky points. Here you’ll find waves that run for as long as a kilometer with a maximum height of six meters.  

Mother Nature has been very generous with the coastline of the Riviera Nayarit: from San Blas to Bucerías surfers will find more than 20 surf spots, guaranteeing waves year round.

According to Manuel Cano Guerrero, national surf champion in every category who’s been on a board since he was five years old, most of Nayarit’s beaches are beach breaks with great waves for 365 days a year.

“The difference is we have all kinds of waves here both in the summer and in the winter,” he said. “In San Blas the waves start running from April through October thanks to the southern currents; in winter we get the northern currents running from San Pancho to Punta de Mita.”

The area’s waves are generally medium-sized, with a maximum height between four and six meters, depending on the tides, the zone and the season.

“We have several first class waves in Matanchen and Las Islitas, places that were all the rage in the 70s,” said Cano Guerrero. “Here you’ll find long waves that run for up to a kilometer. These are catalogued as some of the prettiest on the planet.”

El Anclote, Stoner, Sayulita, San Pancho, Punta de Mita, La Lancha, Punta Burros, La Caleta, Las Rocas, Los Veneros all have their own unique twist, offering waves that attract surfers from around the world.

José Manuel has been surfing for 35 years and enjoys sharing his experience, asserting the Riviera Nayarit is made for every kind of surfer, as there are beaches that offer waves for everyone from amateurs and intermediate surfers to professionals.

There are ideal spots for beginners and intermediates from Borrego to Platanitos—including Punta de Mita.

San Pancho is best for intermediate-advanced surfers, since it’s more complicated and not considered an easy wave. Sayulita is great for all levels, same as many other places.
 
From San Blas to Platanitos surfers will find beach breaks; Chacala is a rocky point. Lo de Marcos y La Peñita have a few variables, because you need good tidal action for good wave breaks.
Others such as Aticama, Santa Cruz de Miramar, Los Cocos, Chacala, Punta El Custodio and Bucerías are also known to have good waves.

Whether you prefer the short or long board or even a stand up paddleboard, the Riviera Nayarit is the place to be for surfers.
