FIVB: Lausanne, Switzerland, January 2015 – The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships The Netherlands 2015 will headline a bumper year of beach volleyball action. But what else is in store for the most dynamic and ambitious season yet?
The Netherlands will welcome the world’s top beach volleyball players from June 26-July 5 as the main event of this year’s calendar. All eyes will be on the cities of The Hague, Apeldoorn, Amsterdam and Rotterdam as, for the first time, the competition unfolds across four locations. A total of 96 teams - 48 per gender – will compete with the qualification process currently being completed across the five continental confederations.
Outside of that, athletes can look forward to an action-packed World Tour with five Grand Slams, a new Major Series involving four tournaments, a World Tour Finals in the United States and six Opens, totalling 16 tournaments.
The inaugural World Tour Finals will take place in a US city yet to be confirmed from September 29 to October 4 and will feature the top eight teams per gender based on a cumulative ranking of points from Grand Slams, Majors and Opens.
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will also be on the mind of many players with the qualification process including all FIVB World Tour events (except the World Tour Finals) up until June 13. This will count towards the Olympic Ranking in order to determine the 15 vacancies for each gender which will take part in the 2016 Olympics. The provisional Olympic Ranking will be available on the FIVB website after each event.
The double gender Fuzhou Open will begin proceedings for the second year in a row from April 21-26. This will be followed by six Grand Slams in Moscow, Russia from May 26-31, St. Petersburg, USA from June 16-21, Yokohama, Japan from July 21-26, Long Beach, USA from August 18-23 and Poland (event to be confirmed) from August 25-30.
Molly will not be pleased to miss school tomorrow. Our intention had nothing to do with having Christina and the girls look after us. The goal was R&R. But things have changed and what happened with their visit was a godsend to us. They went to the market for us and left us enough food in the fridge and pantry to last a few days.
Now we do not need to go out for every meal. We can eat breakfast leisurely. Last evening they brought everything from the lockers. It look them ten minutes while it would have taken us an hour or more. But the most important part of their visit was their presence. Last evening we ate pizza watching the sunset while sitting on the balcony. It was delightful.
They diverted us with their presence. We are so grateful they came. Now I will be happy when they get home.
The Fuzhou Open will kick off the calendar as it did in 2014
A new innovative and dynamic Major Series including four tournaments will complete the schedule for next summer. Porec in Croatia will welcome a Major from June 2-7 (venue to be confirmed), which will be followed by other Majors in Stavanger, Norway from June 9-14, Gstaad, Switzerland from July 7-12 and Germany (venue to be confirmed) from September 1-6.
Five Opens will also take place in Lucerne, Switzerland from May 12-17, Prague, Czech Republic from May 26-31, Istanbul, Turkey from August 11-16, Sochi, Russia from September 8-13 and Xiamen, China from September 22-27. The event in Prague will be a women-only single gender tournament.
The FIVB continues to work towards the realization of a long term calendar with the aim of creating sustainability for the future. On this matter, the 2016, 2017 and 2018 tentative calendars will be presented for approval at the next FIVB Board of Administration in April, 2015

As happens every year, the traditional Vallarta Cup Race Series will be celebrated on the first four Saturdays of the month of January (3, 10, 17, 24) and will signal the start of the activities for 2015 in the Riviera Nayarit.
Organized by the Vallarta Yacht Club (VYC), the event will include the participation of approximately 25 boats mostly from the Marina Riviera Nayarit in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, the Marina in Puerto Vallarta and the Marina Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta, which will also serve as headquarters for the race.
This nautical event was created to be more than just a competition, as it welcomes participants to fully enjoy and take advantage of the natural bounty of the Banderas Bay. In fact, it is so accommodating that new participants can register even after the competition is already underway.
Andy Barrow, the VYC’s Commodore, is grateful for the support of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), a sentiment echoed by the bureau.
“We’re grateful for their support of everything we do; the CVB is key to bringing this event to fruition,” observed Andy Barrow.

The Senegalese defender later starred for Guingamp and Metz, with whom he secured the Ligue 2 title.
30. Gordon Banks (77) is regarded as one of England's greatest goalkeepers, having lifted the World Cup on home soil in 1966 and produced an iconic save from Pele at Mexico 1970. He also participated in UEFA EURO 1968. At club level, the reliable shot-stopper wore the colours of Chesterfield, Leicester City, with whom he won two FA Cup finals and two English League Cup finals, and Stoke City, where he finally held aloft the latter trophy. 3. Angelos Basinas (38) was a key member of the Greek XI that were crowned European champions in 2004, notching the host nation's second goal in their opening victory over Portugal. The determined defensive midfielder also appeared at the 1998 UEFA European U-21 Championship, where the Greeks reached the final, as well as at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup, at EURO 2008 and in three World Cup qualifying campaigns in a row. Basinas made his name at Panathinaikos, with whom he bagged two Greek League titles and a Greek Cup, but also enjoyed brief spells with Mallorca, AEK Athens, Portsmouth and Arles-Avignon.

With every move they have made this offseason it’s clear the New York Yankees are preparing for the early jettison of Alex Rodriguez from their roster in 2015. The signing of Chase Headley to a four-year contract left him without a position in the field and the acquisition of lefty slugger Garrett Jones as a possible DH Friday further takes away potential at-bats for A-Rod.
It makes you wonder if the Yankees really expect – or want – Rodriguez, who’ll turn 40 in July, to play for them at all. It’s almost as if they are giving him a good-faith gesture in allowing him an opportunity to show he can still hit after a year-long suspension for PEDs. However, if he’s hitting .220 with a homer and 10 RBI in the middle of May, the real plan is to hand him his walking papers by Memorial Day and eat the remaining $60 million or so on his contract which runs through 2017. The surest bet in sports right now is that A-Rod will never play through the rest of that pact.
It’s no secret that there’s no love lost between GM Brian Cashman and A-Rod with manager Joe Girardi seemingly his only ally in the organization. So, if A-Rod’s bat is slow and he’s striking out a lot against young flamethrowers, the Yanks can say to their fans “Hey, we gave him a shot but it just didn’t work out”. The leash will not be a long one and most of their fans will not be sad to see him go. A team like Seattle could sign him to the minimum, let him play third and give him a longer look.
The same fate could be in store for starter C.C. Sabathia as well if he cannot recover from chronic knee problems. The signing of lefty Chris Capuano to a one-year deal seems to be an insurance policy if Sabathia can’t go. Sabathia is also due approximately $60 million through 2017 so, if he were released also, the Yanks would be paying more than $120 million, more than the entire payroll of some teams, to be rid of two players.
And you wonder why they’ve maintained they are not interested in signing Max Scherzer to a $200 million deal? That stance seems legitimate considering the club’s current financial state. They also have a lot of dollars invested in aging vets Mark Teixeira and Carlos Beltran through 2016.
Although the Yankee brass would never say it, it seems like the team is sacrificing the next two years until it can open some payroll slots. A position its fans are not accustomed to.

About 140 vessels from the United States, Canada and the northern coast of the Mexican Pacific that are sailing as part of the traditional Baja Ha-Ha will visit the area for a lengthy stay that will benefit tourism in general. For the third year in a row the destination prepares to celebrate the Riviera Nayarit Sailors’ Splash, a rally that coincides with the 21st anniversary of the Baja Ha-Ha, whose participants will be arriving in the area starting on December 12th. The Marina Riviera Nayarit in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle will welcome about 140 vessels that will be generating excellent dividends for tourism in the region thanks to their extended stay in the Banderas Bay area. Latitude 38 Sailing Magazine and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), sponsors of the event, joined forces with the Marina and laid the groundwork to receive the approximately 300 people that will be generating income for local businesses.
“This rally translates into occupancy for the marinas along the Mexican Pacific from November through May; many of these vessels actually stay the whole year round,” commented Rafael Alcántara, Harbor Master for the Marina Riviera Nayarit. “In this manner they activate the economy not only for the marinas but also for the cities and towns they come across.” Alcántara describes this rally as the most stable in the last ten years and one that, among other things, has consistently grown year after year and has positioned itself as the “originator of nautical tourism from the United States and Canada towards the coasts of the Mexican Pacific,” he added.

Karen who just took her 3rd National SUP Surfing Championship a couple ofdays has now wrapped a sweep of the National Championships In Manzanillo this weekend by winning the final 5 mile sprint race to eliminate all of the other girls. She now holds 2 of the 3 National Surfing titles in Mexico for the 3rd year and in a few weeks will be trying to capture the final surfing title as well, somethingthat no one has ever done before. Sort of like the Triple Crown. She is returning to Puerto Vallarta Monday after a grueling training tour that included stops and intensive training in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca and Cancun. She had an accident in Oaxaca with a giant wave that almost ended the tour for her but fortunately recovered sufficiently to go on and take the titles. She will be spending the next few weeks recovering under the care of Dr. Max Greig a well known Puerto Vallarta orthopedic surgeon and trauma specialist. Our own Puerto Vallarta native 18 year old Karen Jacobson has just become the first female ever to win the National SUP Surfing Championships for the 3rd year in a row. She is barely 18 and has traveled all over the world, recently competing in the Ultimate Showdown on CBS Sports from Hawaii where she finished 10th in the world.
She is currently a member of the national team, the Seleccion Mexicana and will be representing Mexico in next years World Cup which has been announced to be held here in the Puerto Vallarta area in Sayulita next May, 2015.
The World Cup is an event supervised by the International Olympic Committee and the ISA International Surfing Association and will be the first time this event has been held in Mexico. Karen had tough competition this year at the finals in Manzanillo just this weekend but was able to have a great day and again take the title. The event was held at the world famous Las Hades Resort much to the delight to the 5,000 or so spectators. She will be tentatively leaving for Australia to compete just after Christmas. She is aspiring to become world champion before her 20th birthday. Let's all support her in that effort. Puerto Vallarta, Jal.-this December 13, at 8 pm, will be held themed "Warrior Race Neón" race under the slogan "Zombies, run for your life" (“Zombies, corre por tu vida”), with a a trajectory of five-kilometre that will leave from the Lázaro Cárdenas Park and tour the Malecon.
With the support of the Municipal Council for the sports promotion and support to youth (COMUFODAJ), as well as the private sector, the race is the pretext to reunite the family and lovers of the sport in the original competition, which illuminate the central part of Puerto Vallarta with neon lights, while a group of "Undead" (“muertos vivientes”) will give a special touch to this event.
The categories to participate are: children, from 12 to 14 years, with a distance of two kilometers; Elite, 15 to 35 years and Veterans-free, 36 years and older, with a distance of five kilometers.
Awards surprises for the first three places in each category and in the "Elite" will be awarded in addition 500 pesos to third place, 750 to the second and the winner will receive 1000 pesos.
The competitors will be entitled to a sports shirt, participation Medal, kit of neon articles, flags of lives, water, and moisturizer in path and goal and an amount of competition.

Puerto Vallarta, Jal.-this weekend with a sports competition in the sports unit of Las Juntas, completed the courses of the program "School of initiation sports in your colony", in charge of the Municipal Council of the sports promotion and support youth (Comufodaj), involving children between six and 12 years of age from different areas of Puerto Vallarta.
In order that children are even more interested in sport and encourage good health, the program counted with the participation of 32 promoters who were assigned to each of the colonies of the municipality for ordered teach practicing for football, volleyball and basketball, a minimum of 20 children per area.

Olympic and Asian cycling star seeks improvement as World Cup track series moves on to Britain
The "Road to Rio" continues this weekend as Hong Kong cyclists try to recover from their poor start in the UCI Track World Cup series.
A 10-member squad, featuring top rider Sarah Lee Wai-Sze, will challenge the world's best in London for valuable ranking points in the lead-up to next year's World Championships in Paris and the ultimate goal - the 2016 Olympic Games.
The six rounds of the World Cup series prior to Rio, the two World Championships and the two regional Championships (2015 and 2016), from the qualification process for 2016.
No one stood out for Hong Kong in a disappointing first round in Guadalajara, Mexico, last month, but officials remain upbeat for the three-day second round starting on Friday.
"They were under some form adjustments before setting off for Mexico because of the Incheon Asian Games and the results did not surprise me," said Hong Kong Cycling Association chairman Leung Hung-task.
"But the cyclists are in much better form now following a four-week preparation for the London's leg and coupled with the experience they gained in Guadalajara, they should be showing some improvement."
Lee finished seventh in the sprint and was eliminated after the first round in the keirin while Cheung King-look came 16th of 20 in the Omnium. The men's and women's pursuit teams finished 21st and 19th respectively, behind Asian rivals China and Japan with only the top two from the region qualifying for Rio.
Lee will compete in the sprint and keirin events, at the same London venue where she secured Olympic bronze in 2012.
Australia and Britain will send their top riders, but the rider to beat for Lee will be Kristina Vogel, the reigning world champion in both sprint and keirin. The German was forced to pull out of the Guadalajara round because of food poisoning.
