Why 'Good Friday'?

gfThe term 'Good Friday' may sound strange to many people considering what had actually happened on that day. Many wouldn't believe that the day Jesus was crucified should be called 'Good', but there are theories explaining how it possibly started.

One school of thought theorizes that Good Friday stems from the words "God's Friday", while others think that the word 'good' would simply be interpreted as something that is "observed as holy".

Different Names
Many Orthodox Christians call the day 'Great Friday'. The day is sometimes also known as Black Friday or Sorrowful Friday, as well as Long Friday. In Germany it is referred to as 'Gottes Freitag' which translates into "God's Friday' while Anglo-Saxons called it Long Friday, which is how it is still known in Denmark.

Exact Date of Crucifixion is Scientifically Debated
The date of the crucifixion has been debated for many years but there has been no agreement on the exact year or the day on which Jesus died. But scientists from the University of Oxford published a study in 1985, which said that evidence strongly points the exact day was Friday, 3 April, A.D. 33.

The study used astronomical calculations to reconstruct the first century AD Jewish calendar and narrowed down to a date of a lunar eclipse, which Biblical and other references suggest, followed the crucifixion.

People Willingly Nail Themselves to Crosses for Reenactments
Reenactments of the events that took place on Good Friday are commonplace for Christians. But some of the faithful ones go to the extent of physically being nailed to crosses for a length of time in order to display their faith. This takes place particularly in the Philippines where the annual reenactment draws tens of thousands of tourists. This happens despite Churches' condemnation as a distortion to the true meaning of Easter.

Origin of Crucifixion
The practice of crucifixion as a form of cruel and disgraceful method of execution first began among the Persians, a Mayo clinic study notes. It is reported that Alexander the Great introduced the practice to Egypt and Carthage, and the Romans are reported to have possibly learned it from the Carthaginians.

Gabriel García Márquez, Nobel laureate writer, dies aged 87

gagacrNobel prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez has died in Mexico aged 87, his family says.

Garcia Marquez was considered one of the greatest Spanish-language authors, best known for his masterpiece of magic realism, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

The 1967 novel sold more than 30m copies and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.

Garcia Marquez had been ill and had made few public appearances recently.

"Gabriel Garcia Marquez has died," a spokeswoman for the family, Fernanda Familiar, said on Twitter.

"Mercedes and her sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo, have authorised to give me the information. Such deep sadness," she added.

'Greatest Colombian'
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos also took to Twitter to pay tribute to the author.

"One Hundred Years of Solitude and sadness for the death of the greatest Colombian of all time," he wrote.

The cause of Garcia Marquez's death was not immediately known but he was recently hospitalised for a lung and urinary tract infection in Mexico City.

He was sent home last week but his health was said to be "very fragile" because of his age. He had lived in Mexico for more than 30 years.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's other novels include Love in the Time of Cholera, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and the The General in His Labyrinth.

The vivid prose of Gabriel Garcia Marquez described a world as exotic as a Latin American carnival.

His backdrop was the poverty-stricken, and often violent world of his Colombian home where democracy never really found roots.

His stories wove imaginary magical elements into real life and were often set in a fictional village called Macondo.

A left-winger by conviction he was not slow to criticise the Colombian government and spent a great part of his life in exile.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Marquez was born in the town of Aracataca, Colombia on 6 March 1928 although his father, a pharmacist, always insisted it was 1927.

His parents moved away shortly after he was born and the young Marquez was left in the care of his maternal grandparents.

Critical acclaim

His grandfather, a veteran of Colombia's Thousand Day's War and a liberal activist, gave him an awareness of politics.

From his grandmother, Garcia Marquez learned of superstitions and folk tales. She spoke to him of dead ancestors, ghosts and spirits dancing round the house, all in a deadpan style that he would later adopt for his greatest novel.

Marquez went to a Jesuit college and began to study law, but soon broke off his studies to work as a journalist.

In 1954, he was sent to Rome on a newspaper assignment, and since that time, lived mostly abroad, in Paris, Venezuela, and finally Mexico City.

He always continued his work as a journalist, even when his fiction increased in popularity.

From the moment I wrote Leaf Storm I realised I wanted to be a writer and that nobody could stop me”

Heavily influenced by the work of William Faulkner, Garcia Marquez wrote his first novel at the age of 23 although it took seven years to find a publisher.

Published in 1955, Leaf Storm and his three subsequent novels received critical acclaim from the literary establishment but did not reach the wide audience he would win with his later books.

In 1965, the idea for the first chapter of One Hundred Years of Solitude came to him while he was driving to Acapulco.

He turned the car, drove home and locked himself into his room with six packets of cigarettes a day for company.

He emerged eighteen months later to find his family $12,000 in debt. Fortunately, he had thirteen hundred pages of phenomenal best-selling text in his hands.

The novel's first printing in Spanish sold out within a week, and during the next thirty years One Hundred Years of Solitude sold more than twenty million copies and was translated into more than thirty languages.

The New York Times called it the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race.

The History Behind The Holy Thursday Before Easter

thursMaundy Thursday is observed by Christians on the Thursday before Easter, which falls this year on April 17. "Holy Thursday," as it is also commonly known, marks the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his apostles prior to his betrayal, trial and crucifixion as portrayed in the Christian gospels.

While the Palm Sunday and Easter observances of Holy Week are generally more joyful, Maundy Thursday observances take on a more solemn tone and focus on two primary rituals that are portrayed in the biblical accounts of the Last Supper.

The name "Maundy Thursday" is derived from the Latin word mandatum meaning "commandment." The primary commandment of Jesus' message is found in the story of the Last Supper when Jesus humbles himself to wash the feet of his apostles prior to the traditional Passover meal, or Seder. Jesus then commands them to "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34). In observance of this commandment, the act of feet-washing is often performed as part of Maundy Thursday church services.

The other important Christian ritual to come out of the Last Supper story is that of the Eucharist or Holy Communion. Described in all three of the synoptic gospels and expounded upon in Paul's epistle to the Corinthians, Christians take communion to replicate Jesus' giving of bread and wine to his apostles during their final meal together. While different denominations may maintain different specific interpretations of the ritual, many incorporate a special communion into the Maundy Thursday liturgy.

San Pancho Presents Beach Art Inspired By The Riviera Nayarit

expo miguelArtist Miguel Méndez will present his work during Holy Week and Easter, all of which was inspired by the beaches of Nayarit. The showing will be held at Bodega 3; this exhibit will kick off its new permanent dedication to expos.

San Pancho, the Cultural Capital of the Riviera Nayarit, together with the San Pancho Collective, invites the general public to the expo titled “Graphic Activism, Art on Vacation” created by artist Miguel Méndez. The exhibit will be held from April 17-27 at Bodega 3, which will now begin to host artists’ showings.

This exhibit, entirely inspired by the beaches of the Riviera Nayarit, is a turning point as it marks the first time an artist outside the Collective will use the dedicated cultural spaces in San Pancho.

Méndez, originally from Guadalajara and with 30 years of experience as an artist, explained that his work is primarily for tourists, but he was inspired by the cultural ambiance of San Pancho and the towns that dot this coastal region.

“Today, 30 years after my first visit to the Riviera Nayarit, I’m exhibiting the results of my Easter week vacations on Las Minitas beach in a series of drawings, paintings and engravings,” stated the artist in his manifesto.

Luz Herrera, part of the San Pancho Collective, said the exhibit was a grand experiment that seeks to expand the number of artists they showcase, an inclusive initiative that will no doubt pay off for San Pancho.

“This work is both an homage and an exercise in nostalgia for the landscape and the freedom of being able to enjoy sitting by the seashore accompanied by locals and vacationers to the Riviera Nayarit, to whom I am grateful for their company and their courtesy,” continued the artist in his manifesto.

The special event takes place on Saturday, April 19, when only a few of the pieces will be for sale. Other dates set for exhibits at Bodega 3 are April 30th and May 28th.

Because of the holidays and the expectation of more visitors than usual, San Pancho is also opening its Mercado del Sol at the Plaza del Sol on April 15th, 18th, 22nd and 25th.
