Once upon a time, in 1971 to be precise, two shaggy-haired yanks, Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton decided to open an American style diner in an old Rolls Royce dealership in London. This place had nothing to do with market studies or target audience. It didn’t even have anything to do with Memorabilia. It was much about the essence of Rock and what this really meant. Under the concepts of passion, irreverence and unpredictability, Hard Rock Cafe was born.

Hard Rock initially had an eclectic decor but it later started to display memorabilia. The collection began in 1979 with an un-signed Red Fender Lead guitar from Eric Clapton, who was a regular at the first restaurant in London. Clapton wanted management to hang the guitar over his regular seat in order to lay claim to that spot, and they obliged. This prompted Pete Townshend of The Who to give one of his guitars, also un-signed with the note “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.” And so our collection began as a good ol’ fashioned one-upmanship battle between two of rock’s greatest guitar players. Not a bad way to begin. Our Memorabilia collection now has over 74,000 pieces and is growing every day.

In 1982, Hard Rock begins a world-wide expansion, with the first U.S. Cafe in Los Angeles. Today, we have over 175 Hard Rock locations in 55 countries. In 1995, the first Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was opened in Las Vegas, Nevada, just off of the Vegas Strip. Now, we have 18 Hotels & 8 casinos in our family.

Hard Rock was that one crazy idea that worked beyond anyone’s wildest imagining and it’s still working, more than 40 years later in cafes, Hotels and casinos all over the world.

And so we are. We’re real not some silly “theme”. As genuine as the Kurt Cobain guitar on our wall in San Francisco or the bejeweled Hendrix belt in Kuala Lumpur. We don’t just own rock history, we are rock history. Have been since 1971.

Friends can be the best part of life. International Friends can be exciting and exotic. The International Friendship Club (IFC) of Puerto Vallarta is the best of all.

The IFC has been around for 30 years and is a stoic member of Puerto Vallarta. It is so nice to have a friend to count on. In this case the friend is one, not in need, but… able to help others.

A “Must” adventure for your vacation in Puerto Vallarta is the Home Garden Tour. It is sponsored and run by the IFC of Puerto Vallarta. Check out the details and put it on your bucket list.

This season will mark thirty years since the IFC Home Tours were started as a way to raise funds to support the fledgling Cleft Palate Clinic. The proceeds from the tours go to support the IFC Cleft Palate Program that serves almost 200 children from birth when the lip and palate are closed until all the necessary surgeries, speech therapy, dental and orthodontia work is complete. This comprehensive program has been serving the Puerto Vallarta area for 30 years and is made possible by the funds raised by the Home Tours. The IFC also supports a number of other charitable projects in Puerto Vallarta.

Your tour will include four homes and will last about 3 hours. The homes you will visit vary from small, traditional Mexican casas to multi-million dollar oceanfront condominiums and villas. Homes change weekly so folks that are on an extended vacation can come more than once and see different homes. Tours are run by experienced, knowledgeable and entertaining tour guides who all donate their time.

Ticket prices are $500 pesos and can be purchased in advance using cash at the IFC clubhouse or at Sea Monkey the morning of the tours beginning at 9 am. You may also purchase tickets in advance on our website with a charge card or Paypal at ifctoursforvallarta.com.

Painting, sculpture and art installations will line the malecón during the entire high season from 9 a.m. to noon. The Winter Solstice on December 21st will see the official presentation of the Sailboat Sculpture and its sundial.

For the fourth consecutive year the Saturday Waterside Art Shows along the Marina Nuevo Vallarta boardwalk are being set up, ready to present local art all throughout the high season in order to reinforce cultural tourism in the Riviera Nayarit.

Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a lineup of mostly local artists preparing painting and sculpture installations, thus creating a tourist attraction for the region.

Federico León de la Vega, owner and founder of art gallery and cultural center Estudio Café is also part of the team that organizes the Saturday Waterside Art Shows and an artist in his own right. He mentioned they have had up to 15 artists participating in these events.

“This space is totally free and the invitation is open to every original artist. The proceeds from the sales will go directly to the artists, while the area businesses will benefit from the attraction they generate,” commented León de la Vega.

Federico León designed the Sailboat Sculpture, which together with the other sculptures that are being installed in the region seeks to create the iconic attractions that generate tourism, such as the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen that receives over 3.5 million visitors per year.

The Sailboat Sculpture is also a sundial and will be inaugurated on the afternoon of December 21st (the Winter Solstice), when the story behind the art will be shared, accompanied by jazz music composed by local musician Néstor Pulido in honor of the great deed.

“The tourist who seeks art is more civilized, spends more, is more generous, has less issues and is less problematic. This is the tourism we should seek,” concluded Federico León de la Vega.

Leñero, considered one of Mexico’s most important writers and on of the main founders of influential magazine Proceso, died of lung cancer in Mexico City.

Vicente Leñero, one of the most important Mexican writers of the second half of the 20th century, died on Wednesday of lung cancer in his house in Mexico City.

Leñero's daughter, Mariana Leñero, said that the writer spent his last days with his family, smiling and joking.

“My father died peacefully, and, as he was so generous, he gave us a great day yesterday,” said Mariana.

Leñero, 81, was mostly known for his plays, but he also wrote novels, short stories, screenplays, and was a non-fiction master. Among his most important books is “Los albañiles” (The Builders), “Periodismo de emergencia” (Emergency journalism), “Gente así” (People Like This), “La vida que se va” (The Life that Goes).

Leñero participated in the best years of Mexican newspaper Excelsior, when Julio Scherer was the director. The paper was known in Latin America for it's independent position before the government.

After Scherer and his team were sacked from the paper through a plot of then Mexican President Luis Echeverría, Leñero helped him to found Proceso, which remains as Mexico's most important political magazines. Leñero wrote the story of the plot against Excelsior and the birth of Proceso in his famous book “The journalists.”

The Mexican novelist always remained a humble and timid person. He did not give many interviews and was known for being a coherent and independent thinker.

Leñero will receive a series of homages in the next days from various cultural Mexican institutions, from Guadalajara's Book Fair (the most important in Spanish), to the Mexican National Council for Culture and the Arts (Conaculta).
