Once upon a time, in 1971 to be precise, two shaggy-haired yanks, Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton decided to open an American style diner in an old Rolls Royce dealership in London. This place had nothing to do with market studies or target audience. It didn’t even have anything to do with Memorabilia. It was much about the essence of Rock and what this really meant. Under the concepts of passion, irreverence and unpredictability, Hard Rock Cafe was born.

Hard Rock initially had an eclectic decor but it later started to display memorabilia. The collection began in 1979 with an un-signed Red Fender Lead guitar from Eric Clapton, who was a regular at the first restaurant in London. Clapton wanted management to hang the guitar over his regular seat in order to lay claim to that spot, and they obliged. This prompted Pete Townshend of The Who to give one of his guitars, also un-signed with the note “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.” And so our collection began as a good ol’ fashioned one-upmanship battle between two of rock’s greatest guitar players. Not a bad way to begin. Our Memorabilia collection now has over 74,000 pieces and is growing every day.

In 1982, Hard Rock begins a world-wide expansion, with the first U.S. Cafe in Los Angeles. Today, we have over 175 Hard Rock locations in 55 countries. In 1995, the first Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was opened in Las Vegas, Nevada, just off of the Vegas Strip. Now, we have 18 Hotels & 8 casinos in our family.

Hard Rock was that one crazy idea that worked beyond anyone’s wildest imagining and it’s still working, more than 40 years later in cafes, Hotels and casinos all over the world.

And so we are. We’re real not some silly “theme”. As genuine as the Kurt Cobain guitar on our wall in San Francisco or the bejeweled Hendrix belt in Kuala Lumpur. We don’t just own rock history, we are rock history. Have been since 1971.
