marine-turtle-protection-programThe Management of Ecology and Environment carried out the official closure of the "Program for the Protection and Conservation of the Marine Turtle" by means of which, 133 thousand 502 turtle offspring were liberated, of the one thousand 960 collected nests in the different beaches of Puerto Vallarta.

“As part of the undertaken actions, we have posed ourselves the necessity of having a marine turtle protection program to generate consciousness in the population. With the restructuring of the municipal program it became not only an achievement of the municipality, but also an achievement of the society that joined the protection efforts" said the director of Ecology and Environment, Luis González Guevara.

During the period of this program on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 39 organized groups were attended, who carried out liberations of these turtles; in general there was the participation of nine thousand 198 people in programmed liberations, while approximately three thousand people got near the incubation corral to liberate turtles that were being born.

“Even more significant than the number of liberated turtles is the participation of society in this program, each day there is a greater number of people interested in participating in protection programs" pointed out González Guevara.

Also, with the participation of the officers of Civil Protection and Firefighters, as well as the Municipal Police, there were nightly walks by the beaches of this city, watching in this way two thousand 900 kilometers of beaches for the safekeeping of ridley turtles and their nests, for which they were given a recognition for the support that they provided.

For his part, Erubey Hernández, responsible for this program, pointed out that with the total of liberated turtles the nine kilometers of beach that the municipality protects would be covered, "we are pleased with the results, the goals were surpassed and for the first time in a long time we have data that allows us to have a clear idea of the behavior of the turtles in the municipality" he commented.

It is noteworthy, that for the next marine turtle season that starts in the months of June and July, it is intended to have a greater covering and nightly increase in the traveled beach distance and the application of turtle conservation techniques in the style of a natural protected area.
