Puerto Vallarta’s Mardi Gras Carnival has been celebrated since 2009, with a small halt in 2013, but is now making a triumphant return for 2014 and is expected to be enjoyed by more than 10,000 spectators.
After nearly 40 years of partying this Carnival seeks to keep our traditions alive while offering an enticing attraction for residents and both national and international visitors.
La Peñita de Jaltemba is ending the month of February on a high note and starting March off with a bang with its 2014 La Peñita Tropical Charro Carnival, which starts on the last day of the month and runs through the 4th of March.
This Carnival is quite special thanks to its unique combination of attractions—this coastal village is known for its love of the traditional charrería, or Mexican rodeo, and the way it truly enjoys and appreciates beauty of its tropical surroundings.
With almost 40 years of history, the carnival’s name stems from a group of charros (Mexican cowboys) in the mid-70s who began what is today quite a ritual.
According to Rossana Araujo, president of the Compostela Hotel and Motel Association, this organization is the main sponsor of this exciting event. The Association is backed in turn by several sponsors and the Citizen’s Action Committee.
“This festival takes place every year in La Peñita,” said Araujo. “There is a parade down the main street with floats, a charro parade, cultural events and boat racing in front of the Malecón; we even hold a beauty pageant for a carnival queen.”
On February 28th there will be an inauguration dance and a ribbon cutting next to the Emiliano Zapata monument; there are different activities every day to keep the entire family entertained.
Thanks to its lengthy history the carnival has attracted many national and foreign tourists throughout its five days, as well as residents who live in the Riviera Nayarit six months out of the year.
Public and private schools and establishments, social businesses and other sectors also participate and back the event, which starts off with a parade and ends with another, with plenty of cultural, sports and artistic events in between.
“These types of events are meant to generate more room nights,” said Rossanna, “especially since the high season ends at the close of February. We’re trying to strengthen the national market, though our foreign visitor numbers are still high.”
The town will host three days of music and entertainment by musicians including Tatewari, Jeff Oster, Bahía de Banderas Jazz Allstars, Steve O’Connor, Olivia de la Cruz, Dos Bertos and Las Musa, among others.
The town of San Francisco—better known as San Pancho—invites you to its 14th Annual Music Festival to take place February 28th through March 2nd. This event is free for the community to come and enjoy another taste of art and culture in the Riviera Nayarit’s culture capital.
This traditional event takes place over three evenings, with the music starting at La Plaza del Sol at 5 p.m. sharp and continuing until midnight. The Festival will feature local artists from the Riviera Nayarit, as well as others from the United States and Latin America.
According to Chris Parsons, a member of the organizing committee, the fact the Festival has been free for fourteen years thanks to the effort of the local residents as well as the artists, as they all volunteer their time to bring to life the community’s longest-running festival.
“The community of San Pancho does everything possible to help the artists; this includes hosting them in their own homes in appreciation for their coming here to share their music for free,” he added.
The Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is pleased to extend this invitation to anyone who enjoys good music, art and culture.
“We're thankful for the support, we’re truly grateful,” said Parsons. “We are all on the same page to help grow tourism in the Riviera Nayarit. This event is unique, it’s free—it always has been, because the community and the artists that participate do it simply for the joy it brings.”
Auditions for artists begin among the local musicians of the Riviera Nayarit and then extend across the border. In the end, they’re all happy to participate and be a part of this grand event, which has its roots in 2001.
This year, the Music Festival welcomes some of the previous years’ crowd pleasers, including Tatewari, Jeff Oster, Bahía de Banderas Jazz Allstars, Steve O’Connor, Olivia de la Cruz, Dos Bertos and Las Musa, among other professional and amateur musicians.
