At first, the fishermen were excited with the massive volume of their catch: a 660-pound shark caught while on a fishing trip off the coast of Surigao, Philippines. And then they were horrified.

The crew of five pulled the gigantic fish onto their boat and, after celebrating and probably anticipating a good payday – two pounds of shark meat goes for about $1.40 in the local market – opened the animal and got the shock of their lives. They found a human head and parts of a leg.

According to the news agency, UPI, the head was "partially digested."

“It was so disgusting. We couldn’t bear the awful smell,” Bodoy Gorgod, one of the fishermen, told Minda News , a news co-operative based in Mindanao, the Philippines' second-largest island.

The shark was caught between the waters of Bohol and Camiguin islands last week.

“We feared that the human remains may bring bad luck to us, so we opted to drop to the sea the shark’s body and what’s inside its belly,” Gorgod, 48, added.

The only things they kept were the massive jaw and fins of the fish, though the wife of another fisherman objected to the jaw, too, saying she feared the spirit of the shark’s victim might come back to haunt them.

“I don’t want the sight of that jaw, knowing that the shark had eaten a human being. Who knows – the victim’s spirit might visit us,” she told Minda News.

Some of the locals speculated that the remains could belong to one of two male passengers still missing from the wreckage of a ferry, the M/V Maharlika 2, that sank on Sept. 13 off the nearby island of Leyte. We all know long haul travel stinks, but when we finally step off the plane and inhale those heady aromas of our destination, it somehow stinks a little less.

Fragrances, apparently, help create some of the best memories we take home from our vacations.

With this in mind, the UK's Heathrow Airport has installed a "Scent Globe" to try to cheer up departing passengers with a squirt of the exotic smells awaiting them at their destinations.

The globe, positioned in the newly opened Terminal 2, offers whiffs representing five nations -- Brazil, China, Japan, South Africa and Thailand.

"These specially created scents will give passengers traveling through Terminal 2 an exclusive preview of destinations that only Heathrow connects to [from the UK]," says Normand Boivin, the airport's chief operating officer.

So what do these countries smell like?

Design in Scent, the team behind Heathrow's globe rely on complex odor infusions to bring them to life in a nasal-compatible form.

'Mystical temple incense'

South Africa's fragrance "captures the adventure of safari with notes of tribal incense, wild grass and musky animalics through the scent of Hyraceum."

Brazil "embraces the scents of its rich rainforest fauna with a palette of coffee, tobacco and jasmine."

Japan "is brought to life through cool, oceanic tones with a mix of seaweed and shell extracts, green tea and Ambergris, capturing the essence of small coastal villages so synonymous with the great Pacific Island."

China's features "mystical temple incense and subtle Osmanthus Fragrans flower" while Thailand's uses "an appetizing mix of lemongrass, ginger and coconut."

Leaving aside the fact that the true scent of intercontinental travel is actually a warm blend of stranger's armpit infused with essence of brutally stewed airline food, pairing countries with odors is an entertaining idea

Apartment owners in Manhattan’s Trump Plaza are facing as much as $1 million in fees to purchase the ground their apartment building stands on–even though they have already paid for their apartments.

The owners of the land beneath the building, at 167 E. 61st Street, said they wanted to sell amid the sky-high Manhattan property market, putting the apartment owners at risk that a new ground owner might jack up the ground lease. “That scared the people there, the board,” says Adam Leitman Bailey, a real estate attorney who some of the apartment owners have contacted, but who is not handling the case. So the co-op board offered the landowners $185 million, a price that would get passed on to the apartment owners, as Bloomberg was first to report.

In New York, co-op residents buy shares in a corporation that owns their building; condominium owners get individual deeds to their properties. Co-op shareholders must pay a monthly maintenance fee to cover the joint costs of the building, including mortgage payments, rent for the ground, and operating expenses.

Trump Plaza is an unusual situation because the apartment owners don’t own the land that their apartment building stands on, whereas most co-ops do own the land under their buildings. Donald Trump is not the landowner, though he did build Trump Plaza. The landowners appear to be the Estate of Donald S. Ruth, based in Cedarhurst, N.Y., according to public records.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday.

The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment offered no surprises, nor was it expected to since it combined the findings of three reports released in the past 13 months.

But it underlined the scope of the climate challenge in stark terms. Emissions, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, may need to drop to zero by the end of this century for the world to have a decent chance of keeping the temperature rise below a level that many consider dangerous.

The IPCC didn't say exactly what such a world would look like but it would likely require a massive shift to renewable sources to power homes, cars and industries combined with new technologies to suck greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

The report warned that failure to reduce emissions could lock the world on a trajectory with "irreversible" impacts on people and the environment. Some impacts already being observed included rising sea levels, a warmer and more acidic ocean, melting glaciers and Arctic sea ice and more frequent and intense heat waves.

"Science has spoken. There is no ambiguity in their message. Leaders must act. Time is not on our side," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the report's launch in Copenhagen.

Amid its grim projections, the report said the tools are there to set the world on a low-emissions path and break the addiction to burning oil, coal and gas which pollute the atmosphere with heat-trapping CO2, the chief greenhouse gas.

"All we need is the will to change, which we trust will be motivated by knowledge and an understanding of the science of climate change," IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri said.

The IPCC was set up in 1988 to assess global warming and its impacts. The report released Sunday caps its latest assessment, a mega-review of 30,000 climate change studies that establishes with 95-percent certainty that most of the warming seen since the 1950s is man-made. The IPCC's best estimate is that just about all of it is man-made, but it can't say that with the same degree of certainty.

Today only a small minority of scientists challenge the mainstream conclusion that climate change is linked to human activity.

Global Climate Change, a NASA website, says 97 percent of climate scientists agree that warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities.

The American public isn't as convinced. A year-old survey by Pew Research showed 67 percent of Americans believed global warming is occurring and 44 percent said the earth is warming mostly because of human activity. More recently, a New York Times poll said 42 percent of Republicans say global warming won't have a serious impact, a view held by 12 percent of Democrats and 22 percent of independents.

Sleep-deprived delegates approved the final documents Saturday after a weeklong line-by-line review that underscored that the IPCC process is not just about science. The reports must be approved both by scientists and governments, which means political issues from U.N. climate negotiations, which are nearing a 2015 deadline for a global agreement, inevitably affect the outcome.

The rift between developed and developing countries in the U.N. talks opened up in Copenhagen over a passage on what levels of warming could be considered dangerous. After a protracted battle, the text was dropped from a key summary for policy-makers — to the disappointment of some scientists.

"If the governments are going to expect the IPCC to do their job," said Princeton professor Michael Oppenheimer, a lead author of the IPCC's second report, they shouldn't "get caught up in fights that have nothing to do with the IPCC."

The omission meant the word "dangerous" disappeared from the summary altogether. It appeared only twice in a longer underlying report compared to seven times in a draft produced before the Copenhagen session. The less loaded word "risk" was mentioned 65 times in the final 40-page summary.

"Rising rates and magnitudes of warming and other changes in the climate system, accompanied by ocean acidification, increase the risk of severe, pervasive, and in some cases irreversible detrimental impacts," the report said.

World governments in 2009 set a goal of keeping the temperature rise below 2 degrees C (3.6 F) compared to before the industrial revolution. Temperatures have gone up about 0.8 C (1.4 F) since the 19th century.

Emissions have risen so fast in recent years that the world has used up two-thirds of its carbon budget, the maximum amount of CO2 that can be emitted to have a likely chance of avoiding 2 degrees of warming, the IPCC report said.

"This report makes it clear that if you are serious about the 2-degree goal ... there is nowhere to hide," said Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists, an advocacy group. "You can't wait several decades to address this issue."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the report demands "ambitious, decisive and immediate action."

"Those who choose to ignore or dispute the science so clearly laid out in this report do so at great risk for all of us and for our kids and grandkids," Kerry said in a statement.

The IPCC said the cost of actions such as shifting to solar and wind power and other renewable sources and improving energy efficiency would reduce economic growth only by 0.06 percent annually.

Pachauri said that should be measured against the implications of doing nothing, putting "all species that live on this planet" at peril.

The report is meant as a scientific roadmap for the U.N. climate negotiations, which continue next month in Lima, Peru. That's the last major conference before a summit in Paris next year, where a global agreement on climate action is supposed to be adopted.

The biggest hurdle is deciding who should do what. Rich countries are calling on China and other major developing countries to set ambitious targets; developing countries saying the rich have a historical responsibility to lead the fight against warming and to help poorer nations cope with its impacts. The IPCC avoided taking sides, saying the risks of climate change "are generally greater for disadvantaged people and communities in countries at all levels of development."

Police in Pratville, Alabama, followed Bo after his owner allegedly fled, and the pooch led police to the man

Man's best friend? Maybe not.

A pooch in Alabama got its owner busted for alleged drug offenses -- all with a gleeful wag of its tail.

The dog, Bo, was caught up in the incident when police executed a drug search warrant this week at the Prattville home of suspect Edward Melvin Henderson.

Henderson took off and dashed toward a wooded area at the back of his home, the Prattville Police Department said in a statement.

Bo, a mix of a pit bull and husky, ran after Henderson after investigators told the dog to "go get him."

Authorities briefly lost sight of them and were close to giving up. But an excited Bo had found his owner hiding in tall grass, and was wagging his tail. Authorities saw the tail and arrested Henderson.

"Henderson was taken into custody without further incident, thanks to his dog Bo," the statement said. "The search warrant resulted in the recovery of methamphetamine and components from a meth lab."

Henderson was charged with failure to obey police, two counts of unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

As for Bo, he is doing fine after the Tuesday incident.

Relatives are taking care of him and the local animal control has been checking up on him.

WASHINGTON – The citizens of economically emerging Latin American countries show one of the highest levels of life satisfaction in the world, and specifically Argentina and Mexico have registered one of the biggest increases in happiness in recent years.

According to a study by the Pew Research Center published Thursday, roughly “two-thirds or more in Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina saying they are doing well,” giving economically emerging nations a similar level of satisfaction to those in advanced economies.

Latin Americans also differ in their concerns and in the things that make them happy compared to other regions such as Asia and Africa, which find in religion their greatest satisfaction and in work and their standard of living their worst disappointments.

In five of the nine Latin American countries studied, what gives people the least satisfaction is safety in their neighborhoods, with only 49 percent in Argentina, 47 percent in Venezuela and 45 percent in Brazil saying they are content with public safety.

Chileans with 49 percent and Peruvians with 46 percent also showed little satisfaction with public safety in their neighborhoods, but they are even less satisfied with the quality of education: 39 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

More in line with the overall tendency, 60 percent of Nicaraguans and 54 percent of Salvadorans say they are less satisfied with their standard of living.

However, if Latin Americans have one thing in common it is that what gives them the most happiness is the family, according to 83 percent of those surveyed throughout the region.

“Latin Americans are also generally positive about the future, especially Brazilians, Colombians, Peruvians and Nicaraguans. Salvadorans, Venezuelans and Mexicans are somewhat more pessimistic, with roughly two-in-ten saying life will get worse for them personally,” the story said.

The citizens of nations that have stood out economically in recent years are considerably more satisfied with their lives than they were in 2007 and rival the more advanced nations – which have declined somewhat in happiness over the past seven years – in terms of happiness in that area.

Countries like the United States, United Kingdom, France and in particular Spain have registered a reduction in life satisfaction among their citizens in recent years, something that has impacted the developed countries, on average, a good bit although some people, such as those in Germany, have registered significantly higher satisfaction.

The study, which analyzes the life satisfaction level of citizens in developing, emerging and advanced nations, is based on interviews with 47,643 adults in 43 countries and was conducted between March 17 and June 5, 2014.

The error margin varies among the different countries depending on sample size, but the average is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

A Mexican judge has freed jailed US Marine Andrew Tahmooressi, his family said late Friday.

Tahmooressi, 26, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, has been held since March 31, when he said he mistakenly crossed into Mexico with three legally-purchased and registered guns in his truck.

A court-appointed psychiatrist confirmed that Tahmooressi has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Family spokesman Jonathan Franks said the judge released him without making a determination on the charge against him.

The family issued the following statement: "It is with an overwhelming and humbling feeling of relief that we confirm that Andrew was released today after spending 214 days in a Mexican Jail."

The Florida man said he got lost on a California freeway ramp that sent him across the border with no way to turn back. His long detention brought calls for his freedom from U.S. politicians, veterans groups and social media campaigns.

Members of Congress were quick to react.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, immediately issued a statement saying, “I am elated that Sgt. Tahmooressi has been ordered released from jail in Mexico. This is great, but overdue, news. I am pleased that both Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam and the judge on the case recognize that Sgt. Tahmooressi did not intend to violate Mexican law, and that his combat-related PTSD should be treated by specialists in the United States.”

In Florida, Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who represents the district where Tahmooressi’s’ mother, Jill, lives, said in a statement, “I am thrilled that Sergeant Tahmooressi has been released from prison in Mexico. We have waited long enough. As a mother, my heart is with Jill Tahmooressi tonight and I can only imagine the many emotions she must be experiencing, namely the relief in knowing her son is coming home and that they will soon be reunited without prison bars, without handlers and without unnecessary travel.”

Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, said, “I am truly overjoyed to hear the news that our Marine Sgt. Tahmooressi is finally coming home to America. During my last visit with Andrew in a Mexican prison, I told him the next time I saw him would be during his release to America; I am grateful that I will be able to keep that promise and be with him and (his mother) Mrs. Tahmooressi as he returns to the United States tonight.”

Lottery tickets are generally considered bad birthday presents. They rarely net any money and basically mean that the person giving the ticket forgot to get you something better.

Then again, there is the case of Deisi Ocampo.

The 19-year-old Chicago girl was given two Illinois $100 Million Money Mania instant tickets by her father and one of them turned out to be worth $4 million.

Dad’s lame idea for a birthday present, a lottery ticket, hits $4M jackpot

“My dad handed me two $100 Million Money Mania instant tickets and said ‘happy birthday,’” Ocampo told the Illinois Lottery. “It turned out to be the best birthday present ever!”

At first Ocampo didn’t put much thought into her dad’s birthday present, but on October 7 – the day after her birthday – she was on her way to work when she remembered she had not scratched her two instant tickets. The first ticket didn’t net her any prizes, but when she started scratching off the second ticket she saw that she had just become an instant-millionaire.

“I started sweating,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it was possible. I worked the whole day without saying a word to anyone!”

After work, Ocampo rushed home to tell her stunned family the good news.

“When I told my dad I won, he asked, ‘How much? Five hundred dollars?’ and I said, ‘No dad, $4 million!’” she said.

Ocampo, who was born and raised in Chicago, is of Mexican descent and lives with her parents and sister. She told the people at the Illinois Lottery that she plans to use part of her windfall lotto win to buy her family a new home and help pay for her college education.

The teen currently works in a clothing store while attending college to become a nurse.

“This lottery win will make it easier to pursue my dream of completing my degree and becoming a nurse,” she said.

Ocampo was presented with a giant version of her $4 million check at the Chicago gas station where her father bought the ticket. The store was also given a $40,000 check for selling the ticket.

The $4 million lottery win is the largest prize in the $100 Million Money Mania, which is a $20 instant game featuring over $100,000,000 in total prize money. Other two $4 million prizes and thirteen $100,000 prizes have not yet been claimed, so if you live in Illinois and have a loved one's birthday coming up…

Well it’s just a suggestion.

Merilee Kern is a children's health advocate, health industry veteran and two-time fitness champion. She is the creator of the ground-breaking "Kids Making Healthy Choices" APP for children, parents, caregivers and educators. Of these children, 12.7 million are obese 18.6% of boys and 15.0% of girls. (According to the American Heart Association's 2013 Statistical Fact Sheet Update on Overweight & Obesity). The feedback I have received has been priceless, and I cherish being a good role model for my children to make a positive impact on society in some way. My children are very proud of me and that is reward enough.

We asked Kern if she thinks there is a trend for families and children to build healthy habits. She commented, "Unfortunately despite the fact that childhood obesity is getting more attention, in the media and otherwise, than ever, the problem persists. In fact, one USA Today story cited "parents may be in denial when it comes to their kids' weight" as "about half of parents with overweight or obese children don't think their kids are too heavy." This unintended "obesity blindness" is exacerbating the problem. Luckily, resources are also becoming more readily available for kids to help educate them at the front line, including my APP now being availed in one forward-thinking school system (see attached). I hope to have the APP utilized in schools from coast to coast throughout the U.S. as a formal, proactive way to address the problem in our academic health/P.E. curriculums."

Kern is also uses media sources. to spread the word. "My advice and tips-based child nutrition and fitness articles regularly run with newspapers, magazines, blogs and other media outlets all across America."

When asked about her plans for the future, it is clear that Kern is very dedicated to her mission of improving fitness. "Right now I want to get the APP in as many hands (i.e., devices) as possible, with elementary and middle schools my primary point of focus at the moment. I feel very strongly that this APP can spur the kind of dialogue in classrooms that can truly affect change...both with respect to kids' health and also lessening the incidence of bullying toward those kids struggling with weight issues."

CHILDREN from Dines Green Primary School turned a tenner into tons of money to help fund services and therapy for disabled people living in the poorest areas of Mexico.

The students were given the charity challenge to turn £10 into more.

Each class was given £10 and challenged to make money for not-for-profit charity Therapies Unite.

Laura Brown, a Midlands based NHS physiotherapist, has been carrying out voluntary work in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the last four years, and set up Therapies Unite.

The charity partnered with MeDiCT a UK based Charity and together these charities dedicate time and effort to improve the lives of children and adults with learning and physical disabilities in Mexico.

Pupils at the school came up with a variety of ways to make more money using their creative skills with loom band stalls and selling cakes and newspapers they'd made, raising an incredible £457. The challenge was designed to promote enterprise within the school which has also been learning all about Mexico and its culture.

The money will be dedicated to one of the charities projects, Catrin's Penguins sessions where children and adults with all kinds of disabilities can experience the feeling of movement and freedom in the water and learn to control their bodies and swim.
