cpnservatopmLast quarter we both had the opportunity to treat pre-Columbian Nayarit ceramic figurines from Mexico, on loan from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection, Autry National Center. At first glance we thought the treatment would be pretty straightforward, but after a closer look it appeared to be anything but!

The surface and structure of the figurines are deceptively highly restored, which can be common for artifacts passing through the art market. In addition to reassembling the fragmented figurines, our goal is to document and identify old from new, and shed light onto the unknown pasts of these objects. We’re approaching the project with a range of tools including X-ray imaging, UV-induced visible fluorescence imaging, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. XRF analysis indicates the presence of lead and zinc on the surface of both figurines, which are common in modern pigments, though typically not found in pre-Columbian ceramics. Using XRF and XRD, we also detected the presence of plaster in some areas, a common restoration material for ceramics. While we work to try to piece our puzzles together, take a look at our projects!

tpConsidered the Tepito  of Vallarta, far from being a troubled colony, its rustic appearance distinguished by their people's history.

The Pitillal is no longer the people of yesteryear, that nutsedge oil, the skinnies, beautiful pasture lands, the peace of the place; stopped being that delegation was founded with neighboring families of mountain municipalities now Pitillal has changed enormously.

Martin Meza Sendiz, the chronicler of Pitillal attests the above and thus received from the priest José Agustín Ibarría Parra recognition as part of the festivities of San Miguel Archangel.

For this reason, the honoree clear that this distinction is rooted in the community of El Ejido Coapinole and the Philharmonic Guild.

"Of course I'm part of the history of The Pitillal, although I was not born here, have lived here since 1932." Over 60 years of collecting every vestige, every advance, every change, every change of an entire people that grows and grows as a few towns in the country.

The Coapinole. Already held more than a hundred years after its founding and far it has been the day that tells Don Martin in his "Chronicles pitillalenses" when Don Miguel Sauceda ordered his manager Miguel Agraz  to build the El Coapinole beside the river, which took behalf of the people.

Also gone are the days when the parish had thatched roofs. Today its two imposing bells ring from the rooftops and announce the arrival of the pilgrimage.

Religious fervor: A float at the head table shows where the Archangel Michael defeats the Devil and cast into hell. In the back, or back, the car shows Jesus, King of the Universe, Lazarus that helps injured and disabled.

It is preceded by the car about thirty dancers with pre-Hispanic clothing. Back bands make war imposing procession.

The people of The Pitillal go rejoicing to the streets or take place on the terraces of their houses where they live applaud and shout to those involved in religious manifestation.

The streets are full of people. The vehicles have no where to move and the few urban routes that serve to the center of Puerto Vallarta have to be diverted to Infonavit or to La Higuera and at times seem to have no end.

But in the square, hundreds of people gather around their patron saint, which has been taken down from his dais in the Temple, a makeshift temple into the street, and on one side of the square.

While some families take the path of return, others on the contrary, eagerly walking toward the square. Girls dolled well with fitting pants or short skirt dresses with trendy hairstyles and arranged almost everything.

Descends off the Coapinole, Calvary Colony or Colony El Toro, the Avenue September 16 or the former hacienda of El Pitillal, or La Bobadilla, every street people descends on the square and just come in time to witness the burning of the castle.

Joy . And after the fireworks , it's time to dance . The expected and dancing with a group of Pitillal , which was the gift itself initiatorMartín Meza Sendiz , although today is silent as Beethoven , years ago was a musician and was part of this band.

Long around the streets of the parish show unusual to look at 12 at night , so customers have the taco as ever, like fresh water vendors , sellers of fried goodies . And that is as it says Don Martin Meza, Pitillal has become the largest delegation of four from the town of Puerto Vallarta has totally changed , because the town that I recount in my chronicles was a quiet little town and today has become a people of a very hectic life as a result of what I have called the pitillalense boom . "

Beautiful women characterize the town , men seeking women find dating and romance in the main square showing its beauty and joy.

luna1Los Angeles (CNN) -- Sky gazers caught a glimpse of the "blood moon" crossing the Earth's shadow Tuesday in all its splendor.

The moon took on a reddish hue as it appeared in different phases between 2 and 4:30 a.m. ET.
In North and South America, where the blood moon was most prominent, observers pointed at the spectacle with binoculars, telescopes and cellphones.

Depending on time zones, it started late Monday night or in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Showers and clouds rendered it a bust in some cities, including Atlanta.

In Los Angeles, the chance to view the total lunar eclipse lured thousands to the Griffith Observatory. Families spread out blankets on the grass to take in views from dozens of telescopes set up like a stand of small trees.

Cameras clicked while watchers cheered and pointed at the blushing moon.
"It's energizing. Look around. Everybody is here to see something rare and live," said Gene Ireland, who teaches astronomy to middle school students.

Ireland encouraged those who reached the hilltop observatory grounds to peek through his 12-inch Dobsonian reflector telescope.

"Everyone is always looking down at their phones, their iPads," he said. "We want them looking up. Looking up, you see a whole different world. Getting away from the cities and traffic, and the sky is just beautiful."

'Blood moons'
In a total lunar eclipse, the full moon turns a coppery red as it passes into Earth's shadow. During the process, the moon's bright glow dims, taking on a red hue because of shimmers of sunlight and sunsets seeping through the Earth's atmosphere.

Dust and sulfur dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere can affect the size of the shadow. The moon has to be full for the total lunar eclipse to occur.

As more of the moon emerges from the shadow, its red tint fades as it gets lighter and transitions to its normal silver color. The entire reddening process takes about an hour.
Does the Bible predict the 'blood moon'?

Left out
In Tuesday's spectacle, clouds hid the view from half of the United States, but cities such as Dallas, Denver and Los Angeles had optimal, front-row seats.

"Woke up in just enough time to see half of the blood moon," tweeted LaTara Hammers of Columbia, Missouri. "It's so cool how the universe works."

South and North American residents watched the entire spectacle, while observers in the Western Pacific caught the second half of the event. Central Asia and some parts of Europe and Africa didn't see much -- the moon was setting in most of those continents during the eclipse.
"You know what's even weirder than the 'blood moon'? The entire solar system and how amazing it perpetually is always while we barely notice," Johnny Argent tweeted.

'A chance arrangement of gravity'
Ed Krupp, director of the observatory, described it as a "typical copper red" total lunar eclipse.

Though rare, it's the sky "conspiring into a special event" that helps draw crowds, he said.
"The fact that there are four lunar successions coming this year and next ... is unusual," Krupp said. "But it's not the kind of thing astronomers get worked up about. It doesn't really mean anything. It's a chance arrangement of gravity and the motions of objects in the solar system, primarily the Earth and moon."

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye and don't require special filters.

The rare sight and was virtually unheard of a few centuries ago.
Before the 20th century, there was a 300-year period when there were no blood moons, said Fred Espenak, a NASA eclipse expert.

"The most unique thing about the 2014-2015 tetrad is that all of them are visible for all or parts of the USA," he said.

Three more chances
If you missed it Tuesday, there will be more opportunities.
North America will see a blood moon four times -- known as a tetrad -- between now and September of next year. In addition to Tuesday, it will make another appearance on October 8 of this year, and April 4 and September 28 of next year.

Miss those, and you'll have to wait until 2032.

palmChristians are in the midst of celebrating Lent or the 40 days before Easter. Palm Sunday falls on the Sunday before Easter and marks the start of Holy Week. Here's what you need to know about the holiday that started because of deep reverence for Jesus Christ.

When Jesus entered into the holy city of Jerusalem, his followers placed palms in his path in the form of reverence. A huge crowd assembled, put their cloaks or branches on the ground, and waved palm branches. According to CatholicCulture.org, the holiday wasn't always celebrated on the Sunday before Easter:

The priests and deacons wear red vestments for Palm Sunday mass. There is a special entrance at the beginning of the liturgy, which includes a blessing of the palms. Worshipers receive fresh palms at the start of the service. Many like to tie the palms to create crosses and display them in their homes as a reminder of the Holy Day. See the instructional video above. The palms are burned and saved for the following year's Ash Wednesday service.

redThe Red Cross of Mexico functions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Like the American and Canadian Red Cross, it assists at disasters, but additionally acts as an Emergency Medical Service.

By Mexican law, it is the only organization, outside of big cities, authorized to render first aid to anyone injured in an auto accident or in the commission of a crime.

As early as 1898, the Spanish Red Cross approached the Mexican Government to inquire about the emergency services available in the Republic. At that time, such services were provided by the Mexican Army. The Mexican President, Porfirio Diaz, had been a general, had strong ties to the Military, and showed no interest in establishing a Mexican Red Cross. By 1907, however, the Mexican Army had fallen on hard times. Diaz, still President, had cut back on its funds, producing inefficiency and dissatisfaction among career officers.

On August 2nd of that year, Mexico recognized the Geneva Convention and on February 21, 1910, a presidential decree recognized the Red Cross, but made it an auxiliary of the Army. In 1919, it was recognized by the International Red Cross and received a charter in 1923. Since then, the organization has been prohibited from accepting any financial aid from any government agency. It is financed by private donations only. It also severed its ties with the Army. Now, the Army gave up its role as the provider of day to day emergency care, shifting the burden to the Cruz Roja Mexicana. Thus, it became the sole designated caregiver in situations normally handled and paid for by governments in most parts of the world.

Today, both the Mexican Red Cross and the Mexican National Health Service, IMSS, maintain hospitals in all major cities. Larger cities also run Municipal Hospitals. However, the IMSS hospitals serve only those who can afford to pay a yearly fee of about $250.00 U.S. or work for companies that provide them with coverage. Those who cannot afford the premiums or are not covered by their employers, still must turn to either a Red Cross or Municipal Hospital for free care. By and large, emergency health care in big cities is good. That is not the case in small towns and villages.

Those who live outside large municipalities and are unable to pay for private care, are totally dependant on the Red Cross to provide emergency care and transport them to the nearest hospital that offers free service. At this time, there are over 418 delegations functioning within the country. More are needed.

A safety net for all who live or visit here, the quality of life in this country, particularly in rural areas, depends on the ability of the Cruz Roja to collect enough money to keep solvent. Those who live here permanently, visit as snow-birds, or even pay short visits, must recognize that when they help support the Cruz Roja Mexicana, the life they help save may be their own.
