001Puerto Vallarta, Jal. - Good traditions strengthen people’s culture, and there is no doubt that Brucerias’ Patron Saint Celebration has been preserved with enthusiasm, thanks to its religious, social, commercial and touristic value.

The festivities of Nuestra Senora de la Paz (Our Lady of Peace), fishermen’s Patron Saint, will start January 16, and conclude with a marine pilgrimage, to the Antorcha de la Paz, on January 24.

In spite of the fact that the pilgrimage is a relatively new event, it is perhaps, the most representative of this cultural and religious week: Fishermen navigate from La Cruz de Huanacaxtle to Bucerias, and then they go by land to Nuestra Senora de la Paz’Church, to present the offering and to pray for a successful year.

All kind of sports, artistic and cultural activities, go on throughout the festivities; but the highlights of the event are the crowning of the queen of the “Feria”, and the fireworks show, which takes place after the celebration of the respective Holy Masses, to finish off the festivities.

These are good days for the commercial sector; sells go up due to the number of tourists and people from other regions who visit Nayarit for this occasion. Gastronomy is also always present at this kind of event; it is one of Nayarit’s distinctive touches.

During these festivities, people are able to appreciate the vast variety of handicrafts from all of Nayarit’s native indigenous groups, and of local artisans.
