CANELOIgnacio Beristáin considered that Saúl Canelo Álvarez, will have in his combat against Floyd Mayweather the great opportunity to become big in boxing.

The trainer Ignacio Beristáin considered that the Mexican citizen Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez, Superwelter Champion of the WBC will have in his combat against the U.S. citizen Floyd Mayweather the great opportunity to "become big" in boxing.

Álvarez, of 22 years, will confront the 14th of September in Las Vegas against Mayweather Jr., of 36 years, and currently mentioned as the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

"He has the quality (Álvarez) and now he will have the chance to become big and show the people that he is a great fighter", declared Beristáin.

The manager, career guide of the Mexican Champion Juan Manuel Márquez, who fought against Mayweather, in September of 2009, pointed out that the U.S. boxer will be a very though rival for the Mexican champion.

"Floyd is a boxer who in his fights is totally defensive and that creates many problems for his rivals. You think you can, but when you are face to face against him on the ring, the crosswords is in Chinese" he said.

He qualified Mayweather as the "super favorite" but said that 'el Canelo' Álvarez and his team have "the great opportunity to win and give the world, not only Mexico, a surprise, the biggest, but I have a lingering doubt of whether he can manage the defensive style of Mayweather".

Beristáin said that if the boxer from Guadalajara imposes himself on Floyd, it will be an achievement that is "sensational for Mexican boxing".

The 73 year old manager qualified 'Canelo', also a Superwelter monarch of the World Boxing Council (WBC), as a great fighter, but considered that he has not yet entered his maturity stage.

The combat in between Mayweather and Álvarez, pacted in 152 pounds (69 kilograms), will be a clash of undefeated as the first one registers 44 triumphs, 26 through knockout, and the second 42, 30 before the limit, with a canceled combat.

entrenadorCONFEDERATIONS CUP

The Lance Journal, one of the most important bulletins of Brazil, characterized Ricardo Antonio La Volpe as the most important strategist of the Mexican Team.

“La Volpe asked for privacy in order to put together the tactical scheme for the duel against Italy. The coach just told a broadcasting station in Mexico", assured the prestigious journal.

It looks like in Brazil, house of the Confederations Cup and the World Cup of next year, they are not very aware of the developments in Mexican soccer.

sanantonioSAN ANTONIO – The road trips end for the Miami Heat on Sunday night when, win or lose in Game 5 of the 2013 Finals against San Antonio (8 p.m. ET, ABC), the Heat will fly and unpack as a group for the last time in 2012-13.

It wasn’t a winding road for the defending champions as much as it was a bumpy road with one big right turn: After going 11-11 in away games through Feb. 1, Miami went 18-1 the rest of the regular season. It is 6-3 on the road so far in the playoffs.

“Our guys have confidence winning anywhere,” coach Erik Spoelstra said at the team’s shootaround session Sunday morning at The Episcopal School of Texas on the northern outskirts of San Antonio. “That’s never really been a concern. Some of our best games have been on the road. You need veteran poise, experienced leaders to be able to do that.

“Now the challenge is, can we play our best game of the series on the road versus a worthy opponent who’s going to come in desperate?”

The Heat players and coachs are tired of the win-one, lose-one pattern into which they have lapsed since the start of the Eastern Conference finals. Several members of their group have said “Enough is enough” to the defensive lapses and slippages in effort or concentration that have turned them into a .500 club for most of the past month.

Yes, the competition has gotten more keen but that’s when champions are supposed to dial up their games, too.

That’s what happened in February after Miami churned along at a .500 pace through its first 22 road games.

Focus understandably was a challenge for a team whose season would be defined by what it did in May and June, but the 11-11 start included double-digit road spankings from New York, Memphis, Indiana, Milwaukee and even Detroit.

Defensive letdowns – of the sort that allowed for San Antonio’s 113-77 rout in Game 3 Tuesday – were cleaned up as Miami began to sense the finish line even before it could see it, and the quality of play necessary to repeat. So instead of giving up 97.4 points as they had in those first 22 road games, they limited opponents to 90.7 over their final 19.

Not coincidentally, the Heat’s 27-game winning streak began with a 15-point victory over the Raptors at Toronto. They were just as good on the road as at home (19-1) after that. Miami’s 29-12 road record is as good as or better than any Finals team since the 2008 Boston Celtics. Its 6-3 playoff mark is an improvement from the first two springs of the “Big Three” era, when Miami went 5-5 on the road while splitting a pair of Finals.

“We knew to defend our title, playing on the road was a huge part of it,” forward Chris Bosh said after the regular season of the turning point back in February. “We stopped making excuses and got the job done.”

Through the 11-11 stretch, there were several things that Miami needed to fix and clean up before it could turn the road in its favor. But now, after four-and-a-half months in which they have gone 24-4?

“Hotel food gets old,” backup Shane Battier said, laughing. “That’s all I got. You want something deep and philosophical? Hotel food gets old.”
One more thing about road work in The Finals: San Antonio, which was 23-18 and 7-2 in the playoffs away from home, shouldn’t count on winning Games 6 and 7 in Miami, if it comes to that. No road team has in the 2-3-2 format.

partidoThe prospects of the national team member look dimmer each time, given that if he can't be fitted in the Draft of national team members or in a foreign country, the midfielder could end up not playing.

Luis Miguel Salvador, Sport President of the blue-light team, made it clear once more that the soccer player doesn't have a place in the institution, for which his manager José Manuel Sanz, continues in the search for an opportunity in a foreign country, after Pachuca didn't offer to buy him.

"No, he will not remain in the club, the manager told us. We were all clear and he told us that his intention was to search, I think that there was a possibility with Ángel Reyna in Europe, and he was going to exhaust that option", said the manager.

-And what if it didn't materialize?- "He will end up not playing", answered Salvador unequivocally on his way out from the club office.

To continue in the Premier League of Mexican soccer, Reyna and his manager have up to next July 12th, end date to register a player into the Mexican team, otherwise he will have to go exclusively to a foreign league or definitely stop for 6 months.

WITHOUTH A FORMAL PROPOSAL BY CORONA

Even though there is talk about a supposed interest from Italian clubs for the young Jesús Manuel Corona, Salvador assured that up to now they continue without a formal offer from behalf of any group from Europe.

"We have not had any information" We are going to keep waiting, the only information we have is through the manager, officially we don't have information of an interested club, if at some moment a proposal was formally made then we would analyze it. In the mean time they are mere suppositions.

soccer 6-15-13The Central American side has won just one of six qualifiers with three goals scored, and failed to find the target at all in its last two drawn matches against Panama and Costa Rica, putting coach Jose Manuel De la Torre's job at risk.

''We know that we come from a difficult situation in qualifying but this is a different tournament,'' De la Torre said Saturday. ''We came here to enjoy it, do our best and aim for nothing less than winning it.''

Mexico has qualified for the last five World Cups and reached the semifinals at its last Confederations Cup appearance in 2005.

''You play differently in a qualifier then in a competition like the Confederations Cup,'' De la Torre said. ''I see the team much more relaxed here.''

Mexico is counting on its opponents using more open and offensive tactics compared to what it has faced in qualifying, but De la Torre's side will face a serious challenge against Italy, which it has beaten just once in 11 meetings.

''When you play qualifiers teams close down and don't leave much space and then if you press forward too much that opens up spaces behind and they can attack you,''

De la Torre said. ''Here it should be different.''

Mexico is desperately hoping to rekindle the form that took it to the gold medal at last year's Olympics, with many of the young players who tasted success in London now members of the senior team.

Its key player remains Manchester United striker Javier ''Chicharito'' Hernandez.

Hernandez lost his starting position this season with United, but still scored 18 goals. He has 50 in three seasons in England and has scored 32 goals in 50 games with the national team.

''The team has quality across the board in all positions,'' De la Torre said. ''It's key to relax and find the harmony that we need.''

Mexico beat Italy for the first time in their last meeting, winning a pre-World Cup friendly 2-1 in Brussels in 2010. It also held Italy to 1-1 draws in the group phase of the 1994 and 2004 World Cups.

However, 2010 marked a low point for Italy with a first-round exit from the World Cup as defending champion. Cesare Prandelli replaced Marcello Lippi after that tournament and guided the Azzurri to the final of last year's European Championship.

The axis of the Euro 2012 run - goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, midfielder Andrea Pirlo and forward Mario Balotelli - remains in place.

''We need to be focused on getting them disconnected,'' De la Torre said, adding that Italy might not know his players too well since few of them are based in Europe.

''If that can be a weapon for us then yes let's take advantage of it,'' De la Torre said.

Both sides will be motivated to play the first official match at the renovated Maracana.

''It's really emblematic to us all,'' De la Torre said. ''Wembley, Maracana - for anyone involved in football these are wonderful places. A dream is becoming a reality and now that it's remodeled even more so.''

Despite its lack of success in World Cup qualifying, Mexico still lies third in the CONCACAF standings, level with Costa Rica two points behind the United States. The top three finishers qualify directly for next year's tournament in Brazil, while the fourth-place finisher will face New Zealand in an intercontinental playoff.

''For qualifying we still have some time but we need to concentrate on this tournament right now,'' De la Torre said. ''We need to take things one step at a time. The key thing here is to get the group working together so we can approach the final qualifiers in the right frame of mind.''

TORONTO -- A smile creased Frazer McLaren's face at his locker stall, but the tell-tale scars of past stitches were hard to miss.

The super-sized Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer registered a different knockout blow of sorts Saturday night, making the most of his five minutes 41 seconds of playing time by jamming in the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

And the six-foot-five 230-pounder did it in style.

After linemate Colton Orr got him the puck at the edge of the crease early in the third period, McLaren found himself running out of room. Trying to go to the backhand, he ended up tucking the puck between his legs, off his right skate and through the legs of goalie Anton Khudobin at 1:34.

"It's a great play by a big man," said Toronto coach Randy Carlyle.

McLaren was clearly enjoying talking about scoring rather than knocking an opponent out with one punch, as he did earlier this season when he floored Ottawa's Dave Dziurzynski.

It was his third goal of the season and the fourth of his NHL career.

"You've got to work to be in the lineup every night and I've sat (out) a couple of the last few games," McLaren said. "Any time you can contribute, especially on the scoresheet and it turns out to be a game-winner, it's a good confidence boost. "

The goal, at 1:30 of the third period, gave the Leafs a 3-0 lead and turned out to be the winner after the Bruins mounted a late comeback.

The two teams go at it again Monday in Boston.

"We have three more periods in a very tough building where we haven't had success before and it's going to take a more intense effort than we had tonight to go in there and have success," said Carlyle.

The Bruins (20-7-3) had won their last eight games against the Leafs, dating back to the 2010-11 season. Toronto's last victory over Boston was March 31, 2011 -- a 4-3 shootout decision.

"We were getting pretty sick and tired of it so I'm glad we changed that tonight," said Toronto centre Nazem Kadri, who continued his hot hand with the opening goal.

The Leafs (17-12-3) did a lot with a little offence in a game that saw both teams misfire. They had four shots in the first period, five in the second and four in the third but managed to score a goal in each.

James Reimer was busy as Boston outshot Toronto 33-13.

"When you win a hockey game and you only get 13 shots and the opposition gets 33, I don't think you can really say that was your game plan," Carlyle said dryly.

Toronto coughed up the puck 16 times but made up for it with 31 blocked shots and 38 hits.

"We were opportunistic and we got some timely goals," he added.

The Leafs also got some emotion from the fourth line of Orr, McLaren and Jay McClement.

"It's nice to see those guys rewarded for their hard work and it's always good for your team morale when those guys can make a contribution," the coach said.

Mikhail Grabovski also scored for Toronto before 19,236 at the Air Canada Centre.

Dennis Seidenberg and Andrew Ference, with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, replied for the Bruins.

"It wasn't there for the first 40 (minutes)," Seidenberg said. "But when we did get desperate you see how we can play. It doesn't really help playing that way when you're down 3-0. We got to start playing that way at the beginning of the game."

The Boston offence has been spotty of late. The Bruins wrapped up their four-game road trip with a 1-3-0 record and just five goals scored while going 0-for-9 on the power play.

Kadri, who came into the game 10th in league scoring with 33 points (13 goals and 20 assists), has three goals and six assists in his last four games.

Toronto, which came into the game having won just one of its last seven, looked sloppy for much of the evening. But the Leafs somehow emerged with two points.

"The bottom line is we won the hockey game," said Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf. "It's a big win for our team.

"Now we refocus, we regroup and we get ready for Monday."

Kadri opened the scoring at 4:58 with his 14th of the season, beating Khudobin on a low shot after a nifty pass from Clarke MacArthur went under Seidenberg's stick and found the red-hot Leaf. John-Michael Liles triggered the play with a quick pass up the wing.

Two seconds after the ensuing faceoff, Orr and Shawn Thornton squared off with the Leafs bruiser winning a lengthy fight. Orr pushed Toronto's league-leading number of fighting majors to 33.

The goal marked the first time Toronto had led Boston since Oct. 20, 2011 when Dave Steckel scored the opening goal in a 6-2 loss.

Grabovski made it 2-0 at Toronto's first shot of the second period at 2:52 after flying past Milan Lucic. The Belarusian eluded defenceman Mark Bartkowski and then had a little luck as the puck bounced back to him off another Bruin before he fired a wrist shot home for his eighth of the season. It was his second goal in as many games after a 10-game drought.

Boston coach Claude Julien replaced Khudobin with Tukka Rask after the third goal.

"The way we gave up the three goals -- they were mistakes," said Julien. "The last goal was a weak goal and I had to give our team a jolt somehow, so I put Tuukka in their and we seemed to turn the corner and play a bit more of our game, but we shouldn't wait for that to happen."

Boston got on the board at 2:30 when Seidenberg's shot from the point trickled through a screened Reimer. The Bruins came on hard after that, hitting the post twice. Ference cut the lead to 3-2 at 18:44 with Rask on the bench for an extra attacker.

The Bruins were playing without injured defencemen Johnny Boychuk and Adam McQuaid.

Toronto's Liles left the game in the second period after a sliding Daniel Paille hit him at the boards. He suffered what was termed a lower-body injury and did not return.

Carlyle said X-rays were negative, meaning it was more of a sprain than anything broken or torn.

Linesman Mark Shewchyk also had a tough night, crashing in the corner boards after his skate tangled with that of Dion Phaneuf.

THE PREMIER INTERNATIONAL SURFING IN SAYULITA

The Fourth Annual Punta Sayulita Longboard & SUP Classic 2013, was a full and exciting competition, people enjoyed watching the competitors fighting with the ocean waves to obtain the first place for the award with a beautiful view bay.

Mexico looked determined not to deliver another disappointing result in the Hexagonal at the start of its match against Honduras, but El Tri gave away a two-goal lead and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

After playing Jamaica to a 0-0 draw at Azteca last month, the Mexicans needed to start building momentum for the remainder of the CONCACAF 2014 World Cup Qualifiers. This is exactly what the team appeared to be doing at the start of this match.

The Honduran back line was helpless in stopping Andres Guardado's cross in the 28th minute from finding Javier Hernandez's head. When the Manchester United star gets to a ball just yards away from goal, he rarely misses, and this was no exception.

El Tri took a 1-0 lead into halftime and kept pressing when play resumed. After winning a free kick near the touchline, Carlos Salcido swung a ball in the box, and a predictable player ended up on the end of it. Hernandez's outstretched foot got enough of a touch on the ball to push it past Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares.

The hosts did not fold after this and continued to push forward and create chances. A well-placed corner kick allowed Carlos Costly to rise above the Mexican defenders and cut the deficit in half in the 77th minute.

Just moments later, a run from Costly led to a penalty kick for Honduras. Jerry Bengtson's poor attempt was saved by Guillermo Ochoa, but the ball bounced fortunately back to him, and the striker passed the ball into an open net to equalize.

A few furious final minutes of the match produced moments of danger for both teams, but the stalemate ultimately held.

Grades

javierherm

Javier Hernandez, Mexico: A

Honduras actually did an admirable job of marking Hernandez—they did not allow him to have much space to operate in this match. He did not have many opportunities, but he certainly did not waste the chances he received.

On both goals, the service was impeccable, and Hernandez needed just a single touch to bury the ball in the back of the net. Even though he left the match early, he still made a massive impact on this contest.

Jerry Bengtson, Honduras: B

The New England Revolution striker grabbed the game-winner last month against the United States, and he was searching for another crucial goal in this match.

He showed off his strength and athleticism on multiple occasions, and he was able to get a touch on crosses into the box. But his finishes were ultimately lackluster, and he was truly lucky to get another chance after botching his penalty kick. Still, he scored the equalizer and deserves credit.

Andres Guardado, Mexico: B

Every great striker needs a creative midfielder to provide him with quality passes, and Guardado played that role to perfection in this match. Hernandez made intelligent runs, but the winger's distribution was just as important to El Tri's attack.

Throughout the first 70 minutes of this match, he was playing extremely well. But his grade suffered because he, and the rest of the Mexican attack, disappeared at the end of the match.

carloscosby

Carlos Costly, Honduras: A

Costly did very little in the first part of this match, but he came alive in a big way to finish the contest. He rose far above the Mexican defenders to head in a corner kick and keep his team in this match.

He was slightly fortunate to have drawn a penalty kick shortly after his goal, but he did make a run into a dangerous position and deserves credit for this.

Giovani Dos Santos, Mexico: C+

Dos Santos' performance today mirrored his career. There were brief moments of brilliance, but they were few and far between.

In the middle of his flashes of quality, he did little to contribute to his team's victory. El Tri will be hoping that an impending showdown with the United States will provide more motivation for the talented attacker to deliver a fine match.

What's Next

Both teams have little time to rest and reflect on the match as they have to be back on the pitch on Tuesday.

Mexico will return to the friendly confines of Estadio Azteca to host the United States—Honduras will travel to face Panama.

ocegueda-8-02-13 05032013ocegueda-300x320

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – An historic exception is being made for US Under-20 international Juan Pablo Ocegueda, who is set to train at Chivas de Guadalajara in the build up to June’s U-20 World Cup.

The club confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Monday that the 19-year-old left back is currently on loan at the Chivas institution from Liga MX club Tigres UANL, but the club’s “Mexican-only” policy doesn’t allow him to feature in official matches for the Rebaño Sagrado due to his decision to play for the United States.

There were suggestions in the Mexican press that Ocegueda would head north to his native Southern California to join Chivas USA following the US U-20 side’s successful CONCACAF qualification for the World Cup earlier this month.

But Chivas sporting director Dennis te Kloese says MLS rules prevented that from happening.

Gringo Report: Te Kloese reveals Chivas USA masterplan

“Our initial idea was to have him in Chivas USA, but league regulations make this too difficult and therefore he will be here in Guadalajara training to be able to play the U-20 World Cup,” Te Kloese told MLSsoccer.com on Monday.

Ocegueda was solid in defense during the qualifiers and started four of the US U-20 team’s five games under coach Tab Ramos. He has been a regular in the US U-20 cycle under Ramos.

Ocegueda previously played in Southern California for club side West Coast before te Kloese, who was formerly youth director at Tigres, signed him for the Monterrey club in January 2009.

The youngster’s long-term club future is still unknown, although if he was to play for the Guadalajara parent club, it would be a major shift in policy.

There is only one known case of a former US international playing for the Guadalajara parent club and that is current Chivas USA defender and Orange, Calif., native Carlos Borja. He played for both the US U-17 and U-20 teams and later featured in Chivas de Guadalajara’s reserve side Tapatío.
