Activities kick off with a monumental catrina
"The Day of the Dead is a proudly Mexican millenary tradition that distinguishes us in the whole world, a celebration that has transcended through time, merging the pre-Hispanic culture and the customs that we have acquired to give way to the biggest of our celebrations, on November 2, in which we make an altar dedicated to our loved ones who have passed away and visit the cemeteries".
This was stated by the municipal president, Luis Alberto Michel Rodríguez, when inaugurating the Day of the Dead Festival 2022 at the Puerto Vallarta Malecon.
"It is a tradition that continues to unite our families, friends and continues to be shared from generation to generation."
MONUMENTAL CATRINA
During the day, the mayor led the lighting of the huge monumental catrina located in the lighthouse area of the Malecon, undoubtedly a character that has been gaining strength in this tradition, an iconic figure of the Mexican idiosyncrasy.
It was emphasized that the catrina is a fine, elegant and feathered figure detailed by Guadalupe Posadas and used in times of Porfirio Diaz, to criticize certain characters of the social environment of our country, same that we know today with the details given by the artist Diego Rivera in his work "Sueño de una tarde dominical en la alameda" (Dream of a Sunday afternoon in the Mall) in 1947.
The idea of this celebration is to represent a beautiful Mexican catrina, looking splendorous with its 23 meters high in blue tones that evoke the sea and its fine decoration that recalls the traditions of our country, which also seeks to break the Guinness record for the tallest registered catrina in the world.
The mayor highlighted the great work in the artistic design of the monumental catrina by Alondra Muca, who is also proudly from Vallarta, as well as the work of all those involved in achieving this spectacular result.

He also thanked and acknowledged the companies that have participated in decorating the boardwalk with the catrina palms and the large skulls that give color to these dates.
