Moving from Surviving to Thriving.
Every April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day is commemorated to recognize, spread awareness, and sensitize the population about this neural condition that nearly 400,000 children in Mexico live with. Genetic causes are still being studied, and it is believed to affect boys more than girls, often manifesting in behavior, development, and communication. It is estimated that 1 in every 115 children in Mexico has autism.
On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly established this day, inviting actions to raise awareness and educate more people about the conditions of the autism spectrum. Autism is a lifelong condition with unknown causes, although there is believed to be a genetic factor associated with an environmental component. Autism affects social interaction to a greater or lesser extent through communication, behavior, language, and sensory integration of individuals.
Autism, as outlined in current diagnostic manuals, must be discussed within the concept of the Spectrum. There are two fundamental diagnostic criteria known. The first focuses on social skills and language use; the second focuses on stereotyped or repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities.
Autism is not an illness; people living with it have a different way of interpreting words, colors, shapes, and sounds from the world around us. With personalized and specialized therapeutic treatment, the quality of life can be improved. The only study available in Mexico, promoted by Autism Speaks (2016), estimates that 1 in every 115 children has autism, which means nearly 1% of the child population. However, the incidence in adult life, as well as awareness of their situation in adolescence, is unknown.
The most important symptoms to detect autism are through language acquisition. When a child is 3 or 4 years old and there is no progress in oral language, parents realize that something is different and that's when they are taken to pediatricians who are experts in autism.
Autism is identified by the color blue and a puzzle piece. The color represents the tranquility that families and individuals within the autism spectrum need to live with this condition. The puzzle piece signifies that a person with autism does not isolate themselves because they want to; they need the support of others.
