“A rose may be a rose. But that rose-like fragrance in your perfume may be something else entirely, concocted from any number of the fragrance industry’s 3,100 stock chemical ingredients, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer.” -EWG

In today's world, personal care products and cosmetics have become an integral part of our daily routines. From perfumes to lotions, we encounter an array of scents every day. However, it's essential to understand what the term fragrance really means and be aware of the potential dangers associated with fragrance-laden products.

Fragrances: Synthetic Artifacts of Scent

Fragrances, also referred to as perfumes or scents, are synthetic concoctions created to mimic and enhance natural scents. Fragrances are primarily formulated by combining various synthetic or natural chemicals to produce a desired scent profile. These artificial scents can be found in perfumes, lotions, shampoos, sopas, scented candles, skin care and other personal care products.

Fragrances are not derived directly from natural sources but are instead laboratory-created compositions. Even so-called “natural or organic fragrances” are artificially modified and often contain undisclosed chemicals. These synthetic chemicals attempt to replicate the scent of natural substances but do not possess any therapeutic properties.

But not only are they devoid of any healthy properties, according to tests done in conjunction by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Environmental Working Group, popular brand fragrance products contained 38 secret chemicals, 14 in average per product. Amongst these chemicals they found many associated with health hazards such as carcinogens, allergens, respiratory irritants, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxic chemicals and environmental toxicants. They also found many other substances not assessed for safety in personal care products.

The problem is, companies are not obligated to disclose what ingredients are part of their fragrances, often listed only as “fragrance” or “proprietary blend” in their ingredients list.

What Can we do? And which healthy alternatives do we have?

The first and obvious answer would be to avoid scented products altogether, however we would be missing out on the amazing properties that scents can have in our lives, ranging from how scents remind us of special times or people in our lives to how specific aromas can induce pleasant feelings and provide therapeutic properties. So to let ourselves experience the wonderful benefits that scents bring to our lives, we have several options to choose from, from herbal extracts like hydrolates to the stronger and complex scents of essential oils.

Essential Oils: Nature's Aromatic Extracts

Essential oils are concentrated, aromatic compounds derived from plants. Through processes such as steam distillation or cold pressing, these oils are extracted from various parts of plants, including flowers, leaves, bark, and roots. They possess distinctive scents and can be utilized for therapeutic, cosmetic, and culinary purposes.

One of the defining characteristics of essential oils is their natural composition. They retain the chemical constituents of the plants they are derived from, which provide therapeutic benefits to individuals. For example, lavender essential oil is often associated with relaxation and promoting better sleep, while tea tree oil is known for its antimicrobial properties.

However, it's crucial to note that just because something is natural doesn't guarantee its safety. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be used with caution, following proper dilutions and taking necessary precautions to prevent allergic reactions, sensitization, or phototoxicity. It is advisable to consult an expert or alternative health practitioner before incorporating essential oils into your routine to ensure safe and effective usage.

That being said, numerous products harness the therapeutic properties of essential oils or use them as an alternative to synthetic fragrances. It's crucial to carefully examine the ingredients of the products you purchase and choose safer, natural alternatives whenever possible. Prioritizing ingredient awareness allows you to make informed decisions that align with your well-being.
