41tvQzVdenL. SY344 BO1204203200 Drawing upon her time and experiences both here at home and in Mexico, Nova Scotia author Barbara McKinley Morrison has penned her first novel, Dangerous Beginnings. Recently we spoke with her about her literary debut.

What inspired you to write this story?

I had a dream. A dream of writing a book. From that dream came the outline and characters for the story. I started writing it, rather typing it, as soon as I awoke. During my husband's illness, when money was running low, I decided to purchase lower priced online prescription drugs, vitamins and supplies. My doctor advised me not to as the quality was not there. I guess it's the old saying, you get what you pay for.

Did it come together quickly or did you really need to work at it?
Once the research was done and my characters found their personalities, the story itself came together rather quickly.

What was the most challenging aspect of the process?

The difficult part of writing the story was not the writing. Researching and reading the illegal pharmaceutical drug trade articles by IMPACT, RCMP, and Interpol was challenging. The long hours spent picking them apart for relevant information was the most difficult.

What was the most rewarding part of the experience?

I found a confidence in myself that enabled me to accomplish a dream.

What did you learn during the process?

Most of my school learning in English grammar had disappeared sometime during the past fifty years. Seriously though, I found this criminal activity to be atrocious, raking in many billions of dollars for the criminals, and the public not being kept informed by the agencies fighting it.

How did you feel when the book was completed?

Lost and lonely. It was though my friends, Susan, Rat, Miguel, and their friends had left me.

What has the response been like so far from those that have read it?

The comments have brought happiness, joy, and satisfaction. The readers befriended the characters and want to go along on more adventures with them.

What's next on your creative agenda?

I do have an outline for my next novel. We'll see a more mature Rat as he prepares for university, still involving Susan and Miguel in dangerous situations and murder. The research will start in November and the writing continue for about year. November will be busy with book signings in Bucerias and The World International Book Fair in Guadalajara, Mexico from the 29th of November until the 3rd of December. I'm looking forward to this with excitement as I will be attending.

"This story is about a lonely widow’s journey to find her true self and do her small part in a crime stopping battle while evolving the sense of intuition we all have and don’t listen to."

Barbara McKinley Morrison blends fact with fiction in suspense novel ‘Dangerous Beginnings’

In her debut suspense novel, “Dangerous Beginnings” (published by iUniverse), Barbara McKinley Morrison incorporates the realities of Mexican drug trafficking into a fictional story starring a dynamic and intuitive leading lady.

Susan is a lonely widow in need of a change. Though she has been living in Canada for three years following the death of her husband, Susan decides to return to the small Mexican town of Bucerias. However, things in Bucerias are not exactly as Susan remembered – or hoped.

Crime is almost unheard of in Bucerias, but time after time, Susan finds herself in thieves’ crosshairs. She befriends a street boy named Rat who comes to her aid in many difficult situations, but soon both Susan and Rat find their lives in danger. Susan came to Bucerias looking for a change, but she didn’t expect to wind up fighting for her life.

This quick read mixes mystery with love and danger while warning readers about the prevalence of the counterfeit pharmaceutical drug trade and the importance of honing and listening to one’s gut feelings.

“This story is about a lonely widow’s journey to find her true self and do her small part in a crime stopping battle while evolving the sense of intuition we all have and don’t listen to,” Morrison says. “She is a lonely, alone woman, but her strength, humor and intuition find her again as she begins her adventure.”

Un gran abrazo (a huge hug) and big thank you to all of the wonderful folks who wrapped over 1,200 gifts, bagged 100 kilos of candy, and put together nearly 200 Crown Royal bags full of small lotions and shampoos at Santa’s workshop last Friday.

All this to be given away by Santa to the children of Bucerias on December 24!!

...And speaking of December 24th: everyone is invited to view the gift distribution at the little Catholic church in Bucerias, Virgen de Guadalupe, at approximately 3:00 pm on Wednesday, Christmas Eve.

Directions to the church: Go up Estaciones street until you reach the little bridge to California Pizza. Do not cross the bridge but instead make a left turn, go straight and finally cross the arroyo to the other side. The little church is to your right.

Hope to see you there!!

For many of us, conversation about art in the Riviera Nayarit generally revolves around the town of San Francisco, located about an hour from the first village you encounter in the Riviera. However, if you’re staying in Nuevo Vallarta you won’t have to go far to get your art fix. Its Marina, located at Villa Cinco, is a veritable art scene, one liberally sprinkled with stories and legends brought across the water by yacht and by sailboat to the local citizens.

In order to get there, simply head over to Villa 5 or the Marina Nuevo Vallarta. Here in this corridor you’ll find sculptures and stories created by different local artists that exhibit their work all winter long on Saturdays from 9 till noon.

There are also new installations to enjoy including the Sailboat Sculpture, which tells the tale of a sailor who traveled from the United States in search of his destiny. You’ll even be able to see the original sailboat: it’s been mounted just a few steps from the statue that symbolizes its voyage.

Another can’t-miss creation is the Sundial, also created by artist Federico León de la Vega. In fact, if you get lucky you just may have a chance to speak to de la Vega himself! He’s the perfect narrator for the story of the sailor who appeared on these shores and many other tales, thanks to his tenure at his Estudio Café, a unique place where you can escape reality amid the different expressions, feelings and worlds inspired by the art within.
