The World Suicide Prevention Day Will be Celebrated

The Ministry of Health of Jalisco, through the Jalisco Institute of Mental Health (SALME), announced the celebration of the World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th. There will be activities focused on reducing the incidence of this problem in the state through information.

The Dr. Luz Maria Coronado Sosa, SALME director, said in a press conference that on the occasion of the commemoration there will be held "the first International Congress of the Ministry of Health with support from the Government of the State of Jalisco. The Expo Guadalajara will take place on October 10 and 11, and the topics that are going to be discussed are suicide, bullying and attention deficit disorder".

The conference is aimed at mental health professionals.

In the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, since June, there have been activities such as workshop courses as part of the World Suicide Prevention Day. Coronado Sosa said that globally a million suicides presents themselves, which provides a death rate of 16 people per 100 thousand. There is a death every 40 seconds for this reason. Suicide is one of the three leading causes of death among people between 15 and 44 years and the second leading cause in the age group of 10-24 years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In Jalisco a total of 446 suicides were registered in 2012. This year, between January and July there were 271 cases (57 women and 214 men), in the same period in 2013 there were 244 (45 women and 199 men).

The theme of the Eleventh World Suicide Prevention Day is "Stigma: a significant barrier for the prevention of suicide."

The World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity for all the sectors of the community, public charities, communities, researchers, doctors, professionals, politicians and legislators, volunteers, bereaved by suicide and other interested groups and individuals to join the International Association for suicide Prevention and WHO to focus public attention on the unacceptable burden and costs of suicidal behaviors with diverse activities to promote understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities.
