This small island, located near the Pacific coast of Mexico has a population of just over 800 inhabitants. According to local legend, Mexcaltitán was the ancestral home of the Aztecs .
Mexcaltitán Uribe, also known simply as Mexcaltitán, is anartificial island (built by man) in the town of Santiago Ixcuintla in the Mexican state of Nayarit. The legend says that Mexcaltitán was the Aztlan Aztec, hometown and birthplace, where the pilgrimage began, in 1091, they took to the founding of Tenochtitlan in the Valley of Mexico.
The island is being promoted as a tourist attraction and has been designated a "Pueblo Magico" by the federal government. It is accessible by boat from La Batanza, a dock area located about 40 kilometers from Santiago Ixcuintla. It is known as " the Venice of Mexico".
