Operation Smile Contributes to Condition the Operating Room of the Institute of Reconstructive Surgery

The civil association Operation Smile, announced a support for the Reconstructive Surgery Institute of Jalisco (IJCR) belonging to the Health Ministry of Jalisco. It is about the remodeling of an operating room where children will be attended with problems of cleft lip and palate.

In a news conference, it was made known the activity that performs the association in Mexico, mainly in Jalisco, in benefit of the infant population of scarce resources. The operating room will be inaugurated the next June 15th in the installations of the ICR.

The executive director of the association, Benjamín Mijangos said that an agreement of permanent collaboration will be signed in between Operation Smile and the ICR to be able to operate every Monday three patients permanently.

“It is the children with this type of ailments who are most often victims of bullying during their life, so it is not only about removing the problem for the children, but also tosmile1 reincorporate them into society" he added.

Likewise he said that soon they will operate in Toluca and Veracrúz. Annually Operation Smile performs in between 500 and 600 operations in the country.

The surgery for the correction cleft lip and palate within the working days is completely free, for which he calls on all the parents to bring their children for being checked the days 13 and 14 of June, and to know the day 16, the listing of patients who are candidates for being operated in the installations of the ICR.

The working days called Operation Smile will take place from the 13 to the 21 of June and doctors from 12 different countries will participate.

In Mexico 23 working days have been made in four states. In Mexico City, Mexico State, Chiapas and Jalisco, 3 thousand 273 patients have been checked, of which a thousand 756 have benefited.

In Jalisco from 2004 to 2012, there has been a total of 13 working days, in which a thousand 28 patients have been operated for cleft lip and palate. The ICR, made in 2012, 53 thousand 26 appointments in general and 6 thousand 567 surgeries.

The goal for the year 2013 in Mexico, is to operate 525 patients. In Jalisco it is the plan to attend 220 new cases, of which 120 will be attended in the present working days and it is estimated that for the next month of november the other 100 remaining cases will be attended.

It is estimated that one of each 10 births in the world can suffer from cleft lip and palate. Since 30 years ago Operation Smile has performed the task of free cirugy for the population of scarce resources.

A cirugy like this is worth 10 thousand pesos approximately, but thanks to donations of sponsors around the world, it doesn't represent any expense for the patients.
