Olympic and Asian cycling star seeks improvement as World Cup track series moves on to Britain

The "Road to Rio" continues this weekend as Hong Kong cyclists try to recover from their poor start in the UCI Track World Cup series.

A 10-member squad, featuring top rider Sarah Lee Wai-Sze, will challenge the world's best in London for valuable ranking points in the lead-up to next year's World Championships in Paris and the ultimate goal - the 2016 Olympic Games.

The six rounds of the World Cup series prior to Rio, the two World Championships and the two regional Championships (2015 and 2016), from the qualification process for 2016.

No one stood out for Hong Kong in a disappointing first round in Guadalajara, Mexico, last month, but officials remain upbeat for the three-day second round starting on Friday.

"They were under some form adjustments before setting off for Mexico because of the Incheon Asian Games and the results did not surprise me," said Hong Kong Cycling Association chairman Leung Hung-task.

"But the cyclists are in much better form now following a four-week preparation for the London's leg and coupled with the experience they gained in Guadalajara, they should be showing some improvement."

Lee finished seventh in the sprint and was eliminated after the first round in the keirin while Cheung King-look came 16th of 20 in the Omnium. The men's and women's pursuit teams finished 21st and 19th respectively, behind Asian rivals China and Japan with only the top two from the region qualifying for Rio.

Lee will compete in the sprint and keirin events, at the same London venue where she secured Olympic bronze in 2012.

Australia and Britain will send their top riders, but the rider to beat for Lee will be Kristina Vogel, the reigning world champion in both sprint and keirin. The German was forced to pull out of the Guadalajara round because of food poisoning.

Mexico City is set to host the 2015 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting Americas Open Championships, replacing the original host city of Guadalajara.

The decision to move the location was made via an agreement with the IPC and Mexican Paralympic Committee, the latter claiming that that they could resource and organise the competition more effectively in the capital.

The Championships is due to be held between April 26 and 29 and will be open to all countries in an effort to provide more opportunity to qualify for Rio 2016.

"The decision to stage the Championships in Mexico City was taken in response to discussions with the Mexican Paralympic Committee, who felt that they could resource and organise the competition more effectively there," said Xavier Gonzalez, IPC chief executive.

"They believe that they can secure more support from Government to develop a dedicated Local Organising Committee and there has also been an increased interest from sponsors and broadcasters.

"In the year before the first Paralympic Games takes place in South America at Rio 2016, as well as ahead of August's 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, Canada, it is vital that we support National Paralympic Committees in the Americas with their endeavours to organise the best competitions possible."

In line with the IPC's efforts to qualify more athletes to Rio, the event will see a change to the number of athletes countries can enter.

This change will mean that National Paralympic Committees can submit a maximum of 15 male and 15 female lifters spread across the 10 weight categories in both junior and senior competitions.

But there still must not be more than two competitors from any particular country in a single event.

In September 2014, IPC Powerlifting announced two other regional competitions in Asia and Europe for 2015.

The 2015 IPC Powerlifting Asian Open Championships is scheduled to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from July 26 until 30, for what will be the first IPC Powerlifting competition in the country, whilst the European Championships is due to take place in Eger, Hungary, between November 24 and 28.

  • Sayulita, the Riviera Nayarit’s Surf Capital, will play host to the top competition in the world of standup paddle and paddleboard from May 10-17, 2015, thanks to the work of the Nayarit MTB and the Riviera Nayarit CVB.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) officially announced on November 12th that the Riviera Nayarit is hosting the 4th World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship, which will be held from May 10-17, 2015.

This will be the first time that Mexico will host this competition and it will be in Sayulita, the Riviera Nayarit’s Surf Capital, as it’s considered Mexico’s SUP (standup paddle) community.

“We are delighted that Mexico will host the 2015 ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship in Sayulita,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “It’s the ideal venue for the best SUP Surfers, SUP Racers, and Paddleboarders in the world to gather and compete for Gold.”

It was the Nayarit office of the Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) that proposed Sayulita as the host city and brought in the world championship.

“We’re convinced that with this world championship the destination will shine even more on the international stage,” said Marc Murphy, Managing Director of the Riviera Nayarit CVB. “We’re clear that Sayulita is a key component of the positioning of the Riviera Nayarit because of its attraction with the surfers.”

There’s no doubt the participation of the Mexican SUP and Paddleboard team in the first three editions of this championship were a defining factor for it to come to Mexico.

It’s important to point out the Mexican team—which took third place (team) in Peru in 2013—is made up in its majority by athletes that are from or now live in the Riviera Nayarit.
