acanadasThe Official Emblem for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 was unveiled across Canada and around the world via a live event at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday. The festivities, hosted by the Canadian Soccer Association, were broadcast on national television, with corresponding live events revealing Host City composite emblems in five more cities.

Just like the event itself, the Official Emblem reflects the core concept of "coast to coast" that will embody the FIFA Women's World Cup in less than three years' time. To help unveil the emblem, Canada's national team was on hand in Vancouver, including national head coach John Herdman and captain Christine Sinclair.

Earlier this year, Canada announced the six Official Host Cities for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015: Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton. This competition marks the first time that a single-sport tournament has been hosted across Canada, from Vancouver near the Pacific Ocean to Moncton near the Atlantic Ocean.

"From coast to coast - a mari usque ad mare - the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 will showcase the best women footballers from around the world," said Peter Montopoli, Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015. "We are proud to unveil the Canada 2015 Official Emblem and official look that will help us welcome the world and its game to our great nation in 2015."

The 2015 Women's World Cup will be the seventh edition of the competition and the third time that it will be held in CONCACAF. The United States hosted in 1999 and 2003.

The Canadian women captured the bronze medal at the Olympic Games this past summer, a tournament won by the United States for a fourth time. [readon1 url="http://www.concacaf.com/page/AssociationNewsDetail/0,,12813~3011604,00.html"]Source:www.concacaf.com[/readon1]

comeandlearnSince 2007, CEPE Vallarta joins EduKick, Inc. in welcoming soccer players from around the world to attend our unigue Spanish & Soccer program in Puerto Vallarta.

Learning is based on the Communicative Approach, without losing sight of the need for grammatical accuracy. Spanish language courses are taught in Spanish and are designed to help students acquire fluency and sufficient communicative skills to cope with any situation that they are likely to encounter.

The size of our groups is no bigger than 15 students. This enables us to give a more personalized attention, according to the specific needs of each student, and to encourage more interaction in the classroom.

On arrival, students are tested for both written and spoken competence. On the basis of this placement test, they are assigned to the most appropriate level for their own benefit.

EduKick School students study at our affiliated private Mexican Middle/High School, Fernandez de Lizardi College located in the town of Puerto Vallarta. Classes are held in the mornings.

The CEPE operates ten levels of Spanish instruction, which are in turn divided into three areas:

Spanish for beginners

Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. The program for beginners focuses primarily on verbal expression, vocabulary expansion and listening skills. This approach is supplemented by work on reading texts for information, writing and basic grammar. We recommend that students follow between four to six hours of this course on a daily basis. Beginners can also enroll in supplementary courses Conversation I and Mexican Culture, the latter being the only content course taught in English.

Intermediate Spanish

Levels 5, 6, 7 and 8. The focus in these programs is on developing the grammatical competence needed to maintain both informal conversation and more formal communication, as well as developing sufficient vocabulary for reading and writing purposes. Students who on placement testing demonstrate sufficient competence to study at Level 7 and beyond may also enroll in a variety of supplementary content courses.

Advanced Spanish

Levels 9 and 10. Advanced classes concentrate on total mastery of the language, including reading excerpts from literature, the writing of essays and enhancement of oral expression. Advanced students can enroll in any supplementary or content courses, according to their needs.

High School Option

EduKick School students study at our affiliated private Mexican Middle/High School, Fernandez de Lizardi College located in the town of Puerto Vallarta. Classes are held in the mornings.

amannyLast Saturday right after the boxing match, the Nevada Athletic Commission conducted a doping test after Manny Pacquiao recovered from the devastating knockout by Marquez, where he pulled of a victory with only two seconds left on the clock of the sixth round.

For the Pacquiao fans who were claiming that Marquez may have been using illegal substances to increase his physical endurance and strength, the doping test results that came back negative for both boxers cleared any of those doubts right away.

Due to the knockout that Pacquiao suffered in the fight, he has now been suspended for four months where he will not be allowed to schedule any matches within this time period, and must stay away from doing any type of physical activity that is related to boxing.

His suspension is for medical reasons, and will undergo several brain examinations to make sure he did not suffer any long term damage.

Pacquiao will not be able to fight anytime soon, and the earliest that the Filipino fighter is expected to be back in the ring is until September 2013.

T-rex

Golfers at the Australian PGA Championship might feel as if they are going back in time.

Way back in time.

The new owner of the Palmer Coolum Resort has erected between the No. 9 green and 10th tee a 26-foot mechanical T-rex, which flips its tail and opens its mouth to unleash a menacing roar when anyone approaches. The owner, billionaire Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer, at least has agreed to turn it off during the tournament.
Quite a scene at the Australian PGA

But it’s one reason the Australian PGA will be leaving Coolum after 11 years.

“I’ve heard it sounds like we are going to ‘Jurassic Park,’ so this will be interesting,” Robert Allenby said.

Palmer wants to import more molded dinosaurs and turn the ocean resort into a theme park, or maybe a casino, but his plans have clashed with a tournament that dates to 1905. The owner already has put up more than 60 signs around the golf course to promote his interests, which includes his plan to build a replica of the Titanic.

Some of those signs, however, are in the landing areas on the fairways. That forced organizers to mark those areas “ground under repair,” where golfers will be able to move the ball if the shot is affected by the signs.

On Sunday, the issue came to a head with Australasian PGA Tour officials, and the tournament appeared in jeopardy. The show will go on, at least this year. PGA chief executive Brian Thorburn said Tuesday that this will be the last year at Coolum. It will be played in Queensland next year, and the tour is looking at other options beyond that in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Tour was jeopardized because of T-rex

Thorburn said he wouldn’t get into the “cut and thrust” of the negotiations Sunday, or how close the tournament was to being canceled.

“We have had a great run on the Sunshine Coast, it has been fantastic, but nothing stays forever,” Thorburn said. “Emotionally, it will be sad.”

Palmer tweeted on Sunday: “We had some issues with pgaofaustralia but all now resolved amicably and we are looking forward to the tournament at Palmer Coolum Resort.”

The tournament moved to Coolum in 2002 after two years at Royal Queensland in Brisbane. But it’s also been played at Royal Melbourne, where Hale Irwin (1978) and Seve Ballesteros (1981) were among the winners, and other top Australian courses. This year’s field includes Adam Scott, Greg Norman, Darren Clarke, Geoff Ogilvy and Australian Open champion Peter Senior.

The T-rex is nicknamed “Jeff” and is activated by movement. Golfers playing social rounds recently have taken “dinosaur mulligans” when the roar occurs during a backswing on the 10th tee.

Palmer has agreed to turn off the robotic features of the dinosaur during the tournament, although it might be featured during Wednesday’s pro-am.

When asked if he ever imagined the century-old Australian PGA would be played on a course with a 26-foot T-rex, Thourburn smiled and said “no.”

“But having said that, let’s put it into perspective,” he added. “It has generated some tremendous publicity for this tournament and we don’t have a big marketing budget so in that regard everybody knows that the PGA is on at Coolum at the moment.”

Defending champion Greg Chalmers was taken aback by the prehistoric beast.

“I’m glad it’s not roaring, that’s a good start,” Chalmers said. “It is just a little strange. It is not what I expected to see.”

tennisThe problem with people who talk and write for a living is that they always have to say something. Have to. It has to be loud, too, if they want to get hits online or ratings on TV. The formula? Inflame an issue quickly, then boil it down to sound bites that can be defined in clear, black-and-white, up-or-down points against the person sitting at the other side of the table

They are always looking for something, anything, as jumping-off points to start a five-alarm fire. That’s how Caroline Wozniacki was set up Tuesday. She was the patsy in a bogus modern-media frenzy.

She innocently, jokingly impersonated her friend, Serena Williams, at a tennis exhibition in Brazil. She used a towel to pad her chest to cartoon levels, and another one to pad her rear end. It was possibly racially insensitive, or possibly just funny.

Did I mention race? That was the jumping-off point for Twitter, bloggers and even “The View.’’

Wozniacki was labeled a racist, and it went viral. International.

And it was unfair. Her little act was not racist. Insensitive, maybe, but not racist.

“You can make as much fun as you want to,’’ Whoopi Goldberg said on “The View.’’ “She’s still going to beat your ass.’’

Yes, anger sells. But in this case, it was created. Williams and Wozniacki actually have quite a different relationship than it might seem based on Goldberg’s comments.

At the U.S. Open last year, someone asked Williams about boyfriend-advice she had given Wozniacki:

“Well, I told her never look through the guy’s phone,’’ Williams said. “That is the worst thing you can do. I told her most relationships end. It wasn’t very good advice.’’

When Williams was sick with blood clots in her lungs and home scared for her life, Wozniacki dropped by her home in Los Angeles to comfort her.

If you look at it out of context, without one tiny bit of research or reporting, this impersonation can be turned into a bitter moment. It was not one. In fact, Wozniacki did a similar impersonation last year that didn’t seem to bother anyone, including Williams. And when Wozniacki did her impression at the exhibition in Brazil, Williams reportedly was in the audience.

Part of the problem is that you have Williams fans who are not tennis fans. For people who don’t know, this probably comes across as someone taking a cold shot at Williams. Maybe they don’t realize that tennis players mimic other players all the time. Every tennis fan has seen video of Novak Djokovic’s on-court impersonations of Maria Sharapova and other players. He did an entire commercial for Head tennis racquets in a blonde wig, ending by saying, “My name is Maria Sharapova and my game is instinct.’’

You can’t expect everyone to understand. But it would be nice if talkers and analysts did, or at least studied up.

There was nothing mean-spirited about Wozniacki’s impression. She was not suggesting that Williams is overweight, or that there is anything wrong with Williams’ body-type. Williams has called herself “bootylicious’’ and talked about her extra “assets.’’ Wozniacki was not insulting the look, but playing it up, like “vavavoom.’’

She was just messing around with her friend, and with Sharapova, who she was playing at the time.

Wozniacki tries to turn moments light-hearted all the time. In Australia, she showed up at a news conference with a plastic kangaroo after joking that a kangaroo had attacked her. She once tried to sneak up behind Sharapova in an interview and pop a balloon to scare her on camera.

True, there may be a difference here in that those were harmless jokes and this is a sensitive issue that goes to the heart of body image and African-American women.

But this was not a statement about black women or their body types. If anything, Wozniacki was making fun of Sharapova, as in “Don’t make me go all Serena on you.’’ Williams and Sharapova are the best rivalry in women’s tennis, and Williams has been crushing Sharapova all year.

Goldberg threw out the topic on “The View,’’ saying that some people are calling Wozniacki a racist. Then, she and Sherri Shepherd expressed anger over the impersonation, and they never shot down the word racist.

They were clearly agreeing with it.

“What’s interesting to me,’’ Goldberg said, “is that that visual is generally seen with a bone in their nose, and a short little skirt like she’s got on. And that’s why people see it as being somewhat racist, because it’s an image that we have seen before.

“And I don’t ever remember them making fun of any of the white tennis players. ... I’m just sort of curious. Why Serena? What is it about her?
"Is it her color? Is it the fact she’s not 4 inches wide and weighs 6 ounces, and can beat all of their asses with her eyes closed?’’

Look, Goldberg is bringing up a serious issue, but she’s picking the wrong moment, inflaming because they needed something to talk about.

Not only that, but Goldberg referred to Wozniacki as “Carol.’’ If she doesn’t know the name of a recent, long-time No. 1 player, then why would it matter if she doesn’t remember people making fun of white players?

I’ve written about the racial divide between Sharapova and Williams. It is partly about the love shown to Sharapova, who is tall, blonde, white magazine-cover/tennis “ideal.’’ She gets more endorsement money than Williams, who is a better player but not fitting the “ideal.’’

I put that in quotes because the ideal is actually a dangerous size 0.

Williams has worked miracles over the years to shoot down that ideal, showing young girls that a different body type can be sexy, beautiful and fit. And win Wimbledon and Olympic gold.

So I’m on board with Goldberg in the argument, but it doesn’t fit this moment. Wozniacki was not denigrating Williams or her dress size.

Was it insensitive? Well, she is a blonde woman fitting the “ideal'' too, and doing something that evoked a way in which black female bodies have traditionally been mocked and caricatured. Maybe that’s just too much imagery.

That was Shepherd’s point on “The View”:

“I know they’re friends, but it’s still, inside it does something to me because we’ve been made fun of for so long for different parts of our body. And to see Serena Williams reduced to this, I don’t like it. I know they’re friends, I know.’’

For Wozniacki, this just might be one of those things you can’t do. She might have crossed a line. She should probably ask her friend about it.

But from a line of insensitivity to worldwide racist? That’s just too much talk.

apvsoccerThe Vallarta Classic Soccer Tournament was started in the mid 1990's by Adrian Eyre, who was living in Seattle at the time. He had the idea to combine vacation, friends, sun and soccer in the beautiful Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta. Sadly, in October of 2003, Adrian passed away and I was asked by many teams to "pick up the ball" and keep the tournament alive. My passion for the city of Puerto Vallarta, my many years working with Adrian and my career as a International Group Travel Coordinator made it a natural transition. I am very proud to be the Tournament Director.

One of the main goals of the tournament is to promote the people of Puerto Vallarta. We suggest that our tournament teams bring gently used children's soccer gear (cleats, jerseys, shin guards, balls, etc...) and hand them out to the many children that come to the fields to watch the games. Local men's teams participate in the tournament along with the Mexican Navy who play the co-ed teams in a friendly match up. The fields we use are located out in neighboring villages, so be prepared for all kinds of field conditions. All of the staff and referees are local and the setting for the BBQ Party on Sunday is a ranch in the hills, out in the countryside that surrounds Puerto Vallarta. Part of your package price, or player/friends & family fee, goes to support the local people. Everyone involved in the tournament is given a T-shirt and the opportunity to come to the BBQ on Sunday.

Another unique feature of this tournament is the emphasis on vacation, friends and fun. Of course every team in every division wants their name on the coveted trophy, but first and foremost is to have the most fun you can possibly fit into four days. Many people come early, or extend their days in order to fit in all of the other activities Puerto Vallarta has to offer. All in all it is one big party.

Please read the testimonials for reviews, and feel free to contact me if you wish to speak to some of the players who have been to past tournaments. I would like to thank all of the teams who have continued to come every year and who have encouraged and supported me in so many ways. Adrian is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but I am grateful for the opportunity to continue and improve "the most fun tournament of the year"! I'm looking forward to seeing old friends, meeting new ones, dancing until dawn and watching some amazing soccer matches!
