Hillary Clinton official Secretary of State portrait crop

Hillary Clinton has won Gallup's 'most admired woman' for 13 straight years. But this year, just 12 percent gave her that title. Her likely presidential campaign may have something to do with that.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is once again America’s most admired woman – her 13th straight year atop Gallup’s annual survey and 19th time overall.

But for the second year in a row, Ms. Clinton’s number has declined. In 2012, 21 percent named her the most admired woman, and in 2013, she fell to 15 percent. In 2014, she’s down to 12 percent.

What’s going on? Politics. Clinton is widely seen as a likely presidential candidate in 2016, and we suspect that has repoliticized her image. As secretary of State for President Obama’s first term, she stayed out of the political fray. Now she’s fully back in, weighing in on the issues of the day and doing nothing to discourage speculation about when she might announce her campaign.

Recommended: How much do you know about Hillary Rodham Clinton? Take our quiz.

Gallup, not surprisingly, finds partisan influence in Americans’ choices.

“Republicans' and Democrats' top five most admired women include both Clinton and [Oprah] Winfrey, and their top five most admired men include both the president and the pope,” writes Jeffrey Jones, Gallup’s managing editor. “Beyond these, their choices differ.”

But here’s an interesting nugget that may give Clintonites pause: Among Democrats and Democratic leaners, Clinton got only 20 percent. She’s still far and away the top choice of Democrats for the nomination, but in Gallup’s open-ended “most admired” question, she’s the choice of only one-fifth of her partisan fellows.

Democrats’ top five women are Clinton (20 percent), entertainment mogul Winfrey (10 percent), Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai (7), first lady Michelle Obama (6), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) of Massachusetts (3).

Clinton enthusiasts can at least take comfort that she scores almost seven times better than Senator Warren, the liberal firebrand who insists she’s not running for president.

Republicans’ top five women are former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (9 percent), Ms. Winfrey (6 percent), Clinton (5), former GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin (4), and actress Angelina Jolie (3).

That 5 percent for Clinton among Republicans is a little plus for the former first lady/senator/secretary of State. But we’re probably way over-interpreting all this. The 2014 midterms just concluded, and maybe some folks are just taking a break from politics and spreading the love. Malala just won the Nobel Peace Prize, no doubt boosting her overall score from 2 percent last year to 5 percent this year.

Another interesting point about the women’s overall list is that below Clinton, the next four are women of color: Winfrey (8 percent), Malala (5), former Secretary of State Rice (4), and Mrs. Obama (3).

On the men’s overall list, Mr. Obama came in first at 19 percent (up from 16 percent last year). It’s his seventh straight year topping the list, typical for US presidents. The only other person of color on the men’s list is retired neurosurgeon and possible GOP presidential hopeful Ben Carson, with 1 percent.

In fact, Dr. Carson is the only potential 2016-er to make that list – if nothing else, a sign that the GOP field is big and ill-formed. That was particularly true in early December, when Gallup did its interviews, before former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) announced he was “actively exploring” a run for president.

Among men, Pope Francis came in second at 6 percent.

One more name jumped out at us on the men’s list: Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also got 1 percent. Say what? He certainly had quite the year: hosting the Winter Olympics in Sochi, annexing Crimea, meddling in Ukraine, watching the ruble collapse.

Of the 805 American adults surveyed between Dec. 8 and 11, roughly eight found him most admirable among all living men in the world? Maybe they admire his chutzpah. Or maybe we should just blame North Korean hackers.

51ec110f09b0a35081ea0244810e55e660002819Princess of Wales Diana chats with children on November 6, 1989, during her visit to the British international

London (AFP) - Some 41 million British wills dating back to 1858, including those of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana, were made available in an online database Saturday.

The government's full archive of wills from England and Wales, stretching back more than 150 years, has been put on the probatesearch.service.gov.uk website.

It includes the wills of World War II prime minister Churchill; novelist Charles Dickens; Diana, princess of Wales; children's writer A. A. Milne; code-breaker Alan Turing; writer George Orwell and author Beatrix Potter.

The digital copies of the wills cost £10 ($15.50, 12.75 euros) but basic details for some of them are available online.

"This fascinating project provides us with insights into the ordinary and extraordinary people who helped shape this country, and the rest of the world," said Courts Minister Shailesh Vara.

"It is a fantastic resource not only for family historians but also for anyone with an interest in social history or famous figures."

Previously the archives had only been publicly available to search in person.

In Churchill's will he gave £304,044 -- worth more than £5.1 million nowadays -- to his family.

When Dickens died in 1870 he left a will written in cursive script that laid out highly specific directions for his funeral.

"I emphatically direct that I be buried in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner," he wrote, adding that mourners must not wear scarves, cloaks, long hatbands, "or other such revolting absurdity".

Orwell, who died in 1950, insisted that his archive of papers be preserved, while economist John Maynard Keynes, who died four years earlier, wanted most of his papers destroyed.

Milne, who wrote "Winnie The Pooh", gave shares of his future royalties and copyright to his favourite London club and Westminster School when he died in 1956.

"Peter Rabbit" creator Potter left a lengthy and generous will reflecting her love for conservation and nature.

Though the archive has been converted into digital format, the original paper records will still be kept in a temperature-controlled environment.

Cristina Fernandez debt

BUENO AIRES (AP) –  The Argentine president's doctors say Cristina Fernandez has suffered a fracture in her left ankle.

Doctors Marcelo Ballesteros and Daniel Fernandez said in a statement they signed Friday that they have recommended that the ankle be immobilized. The doctors did not say what kind of blow caused the fracture.

The 61-year-old leader has been sidelined with various ailments in recent months. In November, Fernandez was hospitalized for several days for inflammation of the colon. She was obliged to suspend her presidential activities for 48 hours in October due to a sore throat.

In January, the president was treated for hip pain and sciatica, and in July she missed Independence Day celebrations to continue recovering from an acute throat infection. Last year, she underwent head surgery to remove a blood clot.

AirAsia QZ8501 665x385

Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 may have been found as Indonesian search crews believe they located the site where the flight and its 162 passengers and crew crashed in the ocean.

The flight lost contact with Indonesian air traffic control while en route to Singapore on Sunday. The pilots had asked to change course to avoid some bad weather, but the plane never sent a distress signal before being lost to radar. The flight had 162 people on board, including 155 passengers and seven crew members.

As the search widened on Sunday, reports began circulating that crash site for AirAsia flight QZ8501 had been found near East Belitung.

“We received information from Basarnas in Jakarta that contact had been lost with an AirAsia flight over Bangka Belitung waters at 6:17 a.m. local time. We then dispatched a vessel with a search and rescue team of 22 members to check the information,” Febi Imam Saputra, an information official at Basarnas Bangka Belitung, said as quoted by Antara news agency in Pangkalpinang on Sunday.

Saputra added that the flight went missing at 03.22.46 South and 108.50.07 East.

“If we look at the map, these coordinates refer to an area around 20 nautical miles from East Belitung,” said Febi.

But officials in Malaysia debunked the reports, saying that AirAsia flight QZ8501 remains missing.

“Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai has dismissed claims that flight QZ8501 has been found,” ChannelNewsAsia reported.

The search for missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 has widened, with several countries joining in to locate the missing plane. Merdeka.com reported that Jakarta deployed seven ships and a helicopter for the search and locate operations. Singapore has also deployed one C-130 plane, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said in a statement.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Though there was bad weather on the plane’s route from Indonesia to Singapore including lightning strikes, one pilot with experience in the region said that should not have taken the plane down.

“Lightning cannot take out a plane,” pilot Elmo Jayawardena told ChannelNewsAsia.

As reports that AirAsia flight QZ8501 had been found still circulated, the Indonesian navy said that no wreckage was yet found, adding that visibility in the search zone was very narrow.

MCALLEN, Texas — A Mexican border teenager is accused of luring a pregnant woman on Facebook for the purposes of murdering her and cutting open her midsection to remove the unborn baby.

The grisly murder took place in the Mexican border city of Reynosa, just south of McAllen, Texas. The teenager who is only 17 years old remains in the care of the Mexican juvenile court system facing the two murder charges, Tamaulipas police investigators told Breitbart Texas.  Since the teenager is under the age of 18 her identifying information was not released.

Tamaulipas police investigators were initially notified of the murder by the staff at a Reynosa hospital when the teenager arrived with the body of the newborn telling the doctors that she had just given birth at her home and the baby had died. When the emergency room staff checked out the girl and the baby they called the Tamaulipas state police who interviewed the teenaged girl.

During the interview the story fell apart and authorities were able to learn that 8 months prior the teenager had in fact been pregnant but lost the child. In an apparent obsession with having a baby the teenager befriended a pregnant woman on Facebook and lured her to a shopping center in Reynosa from where she kidnapped her, investigators told Breitbart Texas.

The teenager took the pregnant woman to her home where she is accused of using a knife to kill her and slice open her midsection to rip out the baby.

Mall

MEXICO CITY (AP) — One of Mexico's leading department store chains says employees' email accounts were hacked and some customer information was taken.

The upscale Liverpool chain said in a statement to the Mexican Stock Exchange on Christmas eve that the attack was part of "an extortion attempt," but did not say what the extortionists had demanded.

Small and medium-sized businesses in Mexico are frequently targets of extortion attempts by gangs who demand protection payments. But large chains are seldom attacked, and seldom are the demands enforced by hacking into a company's computers.

El Puerto de Liverpool, SAB de CV, has 106 stores in 57 Mexican cities. It said the attack "sought to damage our reputation," and added the risk to customers' accounts was deemed to be small.

Neil Olson put up a Christmas tree when two of his sons went off to war in 1974, vowing not to take it down until all six children returned to his Wisconsin home for Christmas. The same tree, he says, is still standing in his living room.

Olson's oldest son was injured in the Vietnam War, and his disability has stopped him from returning to Wausau from Washington state for Christmas. So the tree has stayed up, still covered in the same ornaments, tinsel and lights as the day Olson decorated it. And the needles, though yellowing, are still there.

"The needles are kept on for a reason," Olson, 89, told the Wausau Daily Herald (http://mnhne.ws/1JRQnKL ) for a story published Wednesday. "It's supernatural, I say."

Five of Olson's six sons live in Wausau. His youngest, Rich Olson, said the tree has become part of his father's furniture.

"It's like family now. I hate to take it down," he said.

Despite its permanent status in his home, Neil Olson hasn't flicked on the lights since the year he put up the tree. The large, multi-colored lights are now nearly 100 years old, he said.

"It'd just blow up on me," he joked. "All that dust on there. It'd be like an atomic bomb."

Olson said he still hopes his oldest son, with whom he still talks, will make it home for Christmas one year.

"I bet you if my sixth boy comes home, the needles will drop right off," he said.

Roman romanticism meets rural Ruch in Philippo Lo Grande’s mural, painted in the commons area, soon to be the amphitheater of Ruch Community School.

Lo Grande was born and raised in Detroit and studied art at the Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy, before beginning his 30-year career as a vagabond artist.

His work has taken him to 11 countries and 38 states, most recently to Southern Oregon, where Ruch Principal Julie Barry discovered him painting en plein air in Jacksonville and commissioned him to paint a mural at her school.

In exchange for a few household items, some rain gear and a small stipend, Lo Grande agreed, and for the past few months, he’s spent six to 10 hours a day working on the mural, conversing with students and teaching them how to make their own drawing board, create portraits and use Prismacolor sticks.

“This is my 28th mural,” said Lo Grande, adding that most of his murals are around Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

“I tried doing this in Detroit, but it was too dangerous,” he said. “It was safer in Mexico.”

At Ruch, in a style he calls “magical realism,” Lo Grande depicts mountains and valleys, the progression of the seasons, a stone bridge, the town’s original century-old schoolhouse, and an outdoor stage with columns, reminiscent of the Roman aqueducts. All this he does in his signature purple and gold hues with beeswax-based acrylics.

When the mural is done, Barry said the school will create amphitheater seating so students can perform and present outdoors.

The school’s parent teacher organization pays for artists to come in and provide weekly art instruction to all grades, and together with a local benefactor Wayne Ching, covered the cost of Lo Grande’s work.

Some of Lo Grande’s landscapes, streetscapes and portraits are currently on display at the Creator’s Gallery in Jacksonville. To view more of his work, see www.flickr.com/photos/logrande.

Several Internet platforms were one day ahead of movie theaters in debuting the controversial film "The Interview" by offering the chance to rent the Sony Pictures comedy starting Wednesday.

The film, whose premiere was initially suspended and then announced in some theaters, can be downloaded from sites like YouTube and Google Play for $5.99.

Different sources at these online platforms broke the news, and since 1800 GMT it has been available for anyone wishing to see the movie.

"The Interview" is a comedy by Seth Rogen and James Franco about a fictitious plot in the United States to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, which the Pyongyang regime called "an act of war."

Google's Chief Legal Officer David Drummond announced on his blog that Sony Pictures had been in contact with the company since last week to analyze the possibility of online distribution.

"Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another country (however silly the content might be)," Drummond said on his blog.

Drummond acknowledged that the "security implications" had to be considered, though "of course it was tempting to hope that something else would happen to ensure this movie saw the light of day."

The movie can be rented on Google Play, YouTube and the Xbox Video console, as well as on the dedicated Web site www.seetheinterview.com.

For its part, Microsoft said in a communique that the film will be available first in the United States, a step it decided to take after Sony was the victim of a "sophisticated cyberattack" to prevent its distribution.

But the company also recalled that, as was announced Tuesday, some 200 movie theaters have agreed to premiere the film beginning this Thursday, which Microsoft called "good news."

"A cyber-attack on anyone's rights is a cyber-attack on everyone's rights, and together we need to defend against it," Microsoft said in a communique.

The United States blames North Korea and the group of hackers called "Guardians of Peace," supposedly controlled by the Asian country, for attacking Sony Pictures to keep "The Interview" from being shown in theaters, with the threat of a lethal attack on the movie houses showing it.

 Pope Christmas message

VATICAN CITY (AP) – A somber Pope Francis steeped his Christmas message to the world Thursday in sadness for those with little cause for joy — abused children, refugees, hostages and others suffering from violence in the Middle East, Africa, Ukraine and elsewhere.

Anguish for children who suffer maltreatment or violence, including in the recent terrorist attack on a Pakistani military school, tempered the pontiff's traditional Christmas Day speech, which he delivered from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. A crowd, estimated by the Vatican to number more than 80,000 Romans, tourists and pilgrims, filled St. Peter's Square for the "Urbi et Orbi" message (Latin for "to the city and to the world").

"Truly there are so many tears this Christmas," said Francis, looking solemn and smiling little, in contrast to his often jocular demeanor when addressing crowds.

He lamented that many children are "made objects of trade and trafficking" or forced to become soldiers, as well as those never born because of abortion.

"I think also of those infants massacred in bomb attacks, also those where the Son of God was born," said Francis, referring to the Middle East.

Francis decried the persecution of ancient Christian communities in Iraq and Syria, along with those from other ethnic and religious groups.

"May Christmas bring them hope," he said.

Referring to refugees and exiles, he prayed: "May indifference be changed into closeness, and rejection into hospitality." He expressed hope they'd receive humanitarian help to withstand the "rigors of winter, return to their countries and live with dignity."

The pope also thanked those courageously helping people infected with Ebola in Africa.

In his litany of the world's troubled places, he denounced hostage-taking in Nigeria, and hoped that reconciliation would prevail over "hatred and violence" in Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels have been fighting against government forces in the east of that country.

While much of his message concerned poor countries, Francis had harsh words for some in affluent nations. He prayed for an end to the hardened hearts "of so many men and women immersed in worldliness and indifference, the globalization of indifference."

Christmas joy will only be realized when weapons are transformed "into ploughshares, destruction into creativity, hatred into love and tenderness," Francis concluded before giving the crowd his blessing.

About an hour after the pope went inside, a protester from the Femen activist group bared her chest and snatched the statue of Baby Jesus in the life-sized Nativity scene at the center of the square, while thousands of visitors were strolling across the space. A gendarme from the Vatican's security forces hustled away the woman, after she was covered with a coat.

 Cuban Rums Garc1

MIAMI (AP) – U.S. rum aficionados are abuzz over the possibility of mixing a Cuba Libre with authentic Cuban rum, now that they will be able to bring home liquor distilled in the communist nation.

Relaxed limits on what licensed U.S. travelers can bring home mean that Americans will be able to enjoy small quantities of the liquor at home. But, with the embargo still in place, the rum won't be flooding bars or the market.

And it's unclear what the news means for industry titan Bacardi, which was driven from its Cuba headquarters by the 1959 Castro revolution. In the past, Bacardi has left the door open for a return to its homeland. But company representatives wouldn't give details when asked Thursday what, if any, plans it has if the more than 50-year-old embargo on Cuban goods ends, now that President Barack Obama is working to normalize relations with the country.

"We hope for meaningful improvements in the lives of the Cuban people and will follow any changes with great interest," the company said in a statement. Bacardi said it's waiting to see what effects thawing U.S.-Cuba relations may have.

In 1997, Bacardi bought the legal rights to the recipe and name of Havana Club, a popular rum created in 1935 by a Cuban family who eventually fled the Castro revolution. Bacardi used the recipe and name for a rum it distilled in Puerto Rico.

But the name would become tangled in a long-running U.S. trademark fight with French wine and spirits maker Pernod Ricard.

Pernod Ricard, in partnership with state-owned Cubaexport, already had been selling Havana Club rum, distilled in Cuba, in other countries.

Nearly 20 years of legal arguments followed. Ultimately, a court ruled that Bacardi would be allowed to continue selling its Havana Club in the U.S. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review that decision, giving Bacardi's Havana Club rum its final green light for American sales.

To differentiate its rum — and anticipating an eventual lifting of the embargo — Pernod Ricard then announced it had registered the brand name Havanista in the U.S. to someday sell Cuban-distilled rum on American soil.

Today, Bacardi's Havana Club, still distilled in Puerto Rico, is an exclusive, hard-to-find bottle, sold in limited quantities in Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan and Colorado.

Bacardi, with global headquarters in Bermuda, sells more than 18 million cases of rum worldwide each year. The trickle of bottles that will soon come home in travelers' luggage won't offer much competition. Still, the new policy is an encouraging sign for Cuban distillers, said Robert A. Burr, founder of the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival.

"It's not a green light yet, but it's a light at the end of the tunnel, the beginning of the end of this invisibility" in the U.S. marketplace, Burr said.

Licensed U.S. travelers to Cuba will be able to bring home merchandise worth up to $400, of which $100 can be spent on alcohol and tobacco products combined. Like the rest of the eased trade, travel and currency restrictions announced Wednesday, the rum rules will take effect when official revise and publish the regulations — perhaps weeks away.

And U.S. law still prohibits Americans from circumventing the limits by buying rum — or cigars or other liquor — in other countries and bringing them home.

Rum is a growing market in the United States. Imports have grown to $98.4 million in 2013 from $72.5 million in 2009, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. Sales increased slightly last year to 25.6 million cases, with flavored and spiced rums accounting for more than half of those sold.

Aside from their allure as forbidden fruit, Cuban rums are known for their lighter color and more delicate expression than the dark, heavy rums produced elsewhere in the Caribbean, Burr said.

Rum is a popular export — it seems every Caribbean island and Central and South American country has its own — and consumers often remain loyal to brands even when far from home.

"In Miami, the rum market is partially ethnic-based, with Colombians drinking Colombian rum and Venezuelans drinking Venezuelan rum," Burr said. "Well, there are a lot of Cubans here, aren't there? Some may say that if they drink Cuban rum, they're just giving money to Castro, but I think some will say, 'Finally, we can enjoy the rums of Cuba.'"

In 2012, Bacardi Ltd. board chairman Facundo Bacardi, great-great-grandson of the company's founder, told Cigar Aficionado that "offering the world a Cuban-sourced Bacardi rum — it will happen."

"A lot of companies will look at Cuba as a commercial opportunity, but we don't necessarily look at it that way," he said. "We see it from the perspective of Cuban exiles returning home."
