Sometimes too much love can be a bad thing as Paris discovered on Sunday when thousands of “locks of love” attached to a footbridge caused part of the railing to collapse, forcing an evacuation.

Thousands of lovers from across the world visit the Pont des Arts every year and seal their love by attaching a lock carrying their names to its railing and throwing the key in the Seine.

But police were forced to hurriedly usher visitors off the footbridge in central Paris early Sunday evening after 2.4 metres (yards) of railing collapsed under the weight of the collected tokens of affection.

“The bridge was immediately evacuated and closed,” local police told AFP.

An architect and local officials rushed to the site and a barrier put in place to stop further access. Police said the bridge would be re-opened by Monday.

The Pont des Arts crosses the French capital’s river Seine just in front of the Louvre museum and is known the world over for its “locks of love”.

The phenomenon has become something of a headache for officials in the City of Light, who would prefer something that poses fewer problems of security and aesthetics.

Two young Americans living in Paris have gathered thousands of signatures for a petition they launched in March calling for the locks to be removed, saying they are eyesores and cause damage to the bridges.

The locks only appeared on the Pont des Arts in 2008, having already become a craze in Germany, Russia, China and particularly Italy.

Today, the full 150 metre length of the footbridge is covered in the locks, and the practice has spread to other bridges around the capital.

Forty locks were also recently removed from the Eiffel Tower.

Plastic-Bags1

Each season has its unique traits. Some are good, some are not so good. This depends upon who you talk to of course. One of the benefits of winter is the view, which brings a barren type of beauty. There is no doubt that leaves and green landscapes are appealing, but as an outdoor enthusiast and trail junky (both on foot and on wheels), I can appreciate the outdoors in every variation. There is a lot to be said for increased visibility too. When the trees are bare, you can see the contour of the land and the flow of the trail.

Sadly, I can also see litter; particularly, plastic bags. When you are hiking down a trail it’s easy to reach down and pick that trash or stray bag up. The easy cleanup opportunity is lost when you are barreling down the highway on the way to work though. It is especially discouraging to see hordes of plastic bags clinging to the tops of trees. These bags have obviously been ejected from passing vehicles to be carried by the wind to their final resting place. I’m sure they are present all year, but the winter draws back the veil of leaves to reveal just how much wasted plastic we generate.

What happens to the rest of the plastic bags that don’t get stuck in our suburban forests? And, what can we do to mitigate our waste? For years I was under the impression that we could not recycle these plastic grocery haulers. I’ve reused them as trash bags, lunch bags and anything else I could think of, but ultimately that just prolongs their life before they end up in the landfill. Luckily, just like a lot of our modern day materials, these can be recycled. So plastic bags really end up in three places (like everything else really).

The landfill
In 2011, Americans produced around 250 million tons of waste, 32 million tons of that solid waste was plastic. That’s 4.4 pounds of waste per person per day! It’s up to you to help keep plastic bags and other waste out of landfills.

Recycled into other goods
There is hope because recycling and composting helped prevent 87 million tons of material from reaching the landfills that year. That gives us an average of about 1.53 pounds of recycled and composted waste out of our 4.4 pounds per person per day. About 11 percent of the recycled waste from the overall count was the category of plastics that include plastic bags. Unfortunately, only 8 percent of the total plastic waste generated was recycled in 2011. We can change this. There are more than 1,800 businesses in the U.S. that handle or reclaim post-consumer plastics. Put simply, bring your used plastic bags to the grocery store when you shop and drop them at the bag recycle bin. If your store doesn’t have a recycle service for plastic bags, ask the store manager why not or what the alternatives are. You can also find a curbside drop off.

Where does recycled plastic go? You handle it all the time and probably don’t realize it. Products include bottles, carpet, textiles, paper coating and even clothes.

In the trees (or anywhere else as litter)
Don’t let your bags end up here. It’s an eyesore for your community, dangerous for the animals in your environment and doesn’t contribute to the reduction of source materials needed for plastic manufacturing.

What’s the bottom line? Recycle your plastic bags, it’s easy. Why? It helps keep trash off the streets. It helps reduce the need for raw resources in manufacturing and it reduces the amount of waste that goes to the landfill; it even helps generate power. Did you know that you can save enough energy to power your laptop for 3.4 hours by recycling 10 plastic bags?

3mIn a daring, movie-worthy operation, three men escaped from a Canadian jail by helicopter, prompting a massive manhunt, local media reported.

The men escaped from a detention center in Quebec City using a green helicopter Saturday night, CNN partner CBC reported. It's unclear how they pulled it off -- authorities are still working to get more details.

"We are talking closely with the detention center to figure out exactly how the escape transpired," Ann Mathieu, a spokeswoman for Quebec Provincial Police, told CBC. "The priority number one is to find the helicopter."

A manhunt is under way for Yves Denis Yvon Lamontagne, 35, Denis Lefebvre, 53, and Serge Pomerleau, 49.

The first two were arrested in a drug bust in 2010 and were awaiting trial, according to CBC. Police found weapons, dozens of cars and a plane during the bust, it said. CBC did not provide information on the third suspect.

This is the second brazen jail escape in Canada in a little over a year.

In March 2013, two men posing as tourists commandeered a helicopter from a Canadian tour company, ordered the pilot to fly over a detention center near Montreal, hoisted two inmates into the hovering aircraft using cables -- and zipped away.

It was a real "James Bond moment," witness Francis Emond said about last year's escape from the facility in Saint -Jerome, northwest of Montreal. While spectacular, airborne escapes are not unheard of.

Albanian inmate Alket Rizaj broke out of a maximum security prison in Greece twice -- in 2006 and 2009.

On both occasions, accomplices swooped in to the prison's courtyard on helicopters. Inmates then climbed aboard using rope ladders. Both times, Rizaj was recaptured.

Last year, another prison escape in Greece tried to use the same tactic. But the plot was foiled when the prisoner was shot and the chopper was forced to land on the prison parking lot.

In 1971, Joel David Kaplan escaped from a Mexican jail aboard a helicopter.

The New Yorker's flight inspired the book "The 10-Second Jailbreak: The Helicopter Escape of Joel David Kaplan" and the 1975 movie "Breakout."

And in France, Pascal Payet escaped not once, not twice, but three times from French prisons.

Each time, he was recaptured.

cash-found-in-sofa

It’s the classic dilemma: what would you do if you came across a hundred dollar note in the street: try to find its owner or stuff it in your pocket and walk away? Now imagine that you, a poor student, come across $41,000 in cash stuffed inside an old second hand sofa you’d just scrounged for, what would you do?

When SUNY New Paltz geology student Reese Werkhoven, and his two friends Cally Guasti and Lara Russo were trying out their new couch for the first time after purchasing it at a Salvation Army store, simply because it “fit the right dimensions” for the room, despite it being “pretty ugly”. It was a decision they certainly wouldn’t regret though when Werkhoven felt something in the arms of the sofa and pulled out an envelope stuffed with $20 bills adding up to $700.

Werkhoven stated that at that moment he was ecstatic, having never found more than fifty cents in a couch before. The trio then began a thorough search of the couch to see what other secrets it might be hiding, discovering multiple envelopes packed full with money, each adding up to $1000. After twenty minutes they were sitting on more than $40,000 in cash.

Immediately they began to plan what to do with the money, with ideas ranging from paying off student loans, to buying new cars for parents and travelling the world, until they came across an envelope that was named.

Russo stated: “We had a lot of moral discussions about the money. We all agreed that we had to bring the money back to whoever it belonged to…it’s their money – we didn’t earn it. However, there were a lot of grey areas.”

After discussing it into the middle of the night amongst themselves and their parents, they came to the decision to find the woman it belonged to and then they could decide whether she had earned it and deserved to have it back. Werkhoven’s mother found her in the phone book and the next day they phoned her to get the full story. The first thing they did was tell her about the purchase of the sofa from the Salvation Army, to which she replied: “Oh, I left a lot of money in that couch.”

That afternoon, they made the drive to her house, and handed the money back to the woman. She explained that her husband had dished out money to her each week to put away in the weeks before he died from a heart condition. She then continued to work as a florist, also saving up that money and stashing it in the sofa. The couch stuffed with cash remained in her home until she went for surgery on her back, and her daughter replaced it with a full sized, taking the old couch down to the Salvation Army, unknowing of the secret cash it held.

The woman, who remains anonymous, commented that she felt her husband was present in the room at the time the money was returned. In return for their good deed, Guasti, Russo and Werkhoven were presented with $1000 from the woman as a reward.

vegas-winner

Sounds easy! It would be great if it was. But for the newest millionaire to leave Las Vegas, Jonathan Dimmig, that’s exactly what he has done. Dimmig has just won the second largest poker tournament prize ever at a whopping $1.3 million.

Dimmig took part in the four day long WSOP 2014 Millionaire Maker tournament making his way through the rounds and remaining in the game beating 7,976 other players. The tournament is a buy in and each player hands over $1,500 for the pleasure of competing to win the top prize, a big gamble in itself.

Dimmig hasn’t always been a poker player and it was only a couple of years ago that he was in the financial industry in Buffalo. He played poker as a hobby earning bits of extra cash on the side and took the brave decision to give it all up and move to Vegas to play the cards full time. Everyone around him must have thought he was totally crazy but he’ll be the one laughing now.

Before swooping on the massive cash prize that would only be unimaginable to all the hopeful poker players mulling around the casinos in Vegas, he’d only ever won a total of $35,000 in winnings as a whole and the most he’d won in one go was just over $11,000, so as he moved on through the tournament his nerves must have been rattling.

It wasn’t all plain sailing though as he was in bottom place at one stage at the final table with a very low count of chips, but battled through and regained a good position. He may be described as a big risk taker going “all in” five times in the final stages but it certainly paid off for him. So what will he do with his new found cash? Gamble it all away maybe? He’d be best to get out of Vegas while he can!

princess

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have arrived in Normandy to meet British veterans who risked their lives on D-Day.

They joined a tea party with former soldiers after events commemorating the invasion's 70th anniversary ended in style with a firework display in front of world leaders at Sword Beach in Ouistreham.

The Duke of Cambridge made a speech during an memorial event in Arromanches-les-Bains - paying tribute to those who gave their lives 70 years ago today.

He said: 'They gave up everything for our freedom. They lie now together in the beautifully kept cemeteries that lie on the coast.'

'However, today is also about the young. It is vital for them that they remember the sacrifice made by so many.'

Prince William then laid a wreath in front of hundreds of former soldiers at an event on Gold Beach.

The royal couple were then shown a reenactment of the D Day landings.

Earlier in the day, the Queen led tributes to the 'immense and heroic endeavour' of the 150,000 Allied troops who attacked Nazi-occupied France on June 6 1944.

moooooooon.si

For the first time, scientists have discovered evidence backing up the theory that the moon was created when a separate planet crashed into the Earth.

Published in the journal Science, the study states that researchers found the evidence by analyzing lunar rocks brought back to Earth during the Apollo mission more than 40 years ago. Scientists said they identified small chemical differences between some moon rocks and the rocks found on the Earth, suggesting that another world must have contributed to the lunar body’s creation.

Speaking with BBC News, lead author of the study Dr. Daniel Herwartz of the University of Goettingen seemed almost relieved that his team was able to make the breakthrough.

"It was getting to the stage where some people were suggesting that the collision had not taken place," he said. "But we have now discovered small differences between the Earth and the Moon. This confirms the giant impact hypothesis.”

Herwartz also told Reuters that although “the differences are small and difficult to detect … they are there.”

Currently, the prevailing theory is that approximately 4.5 billion years ago, a planet called “Theia” collided with the Earth, with the resulting debris combining to form the moon. Until this new study was published, however, scientists had found no evidence of Theia in the moon’s composition. Now, the study’s researchers believe the moon’s composition is roughly a 50/50 split between Earth and Theia.

Despite the news, some scientists remain skeptical. As noted by Reuters, it is generally believed that each body in space is home to a different chemical makeup or “fingerprint.” If that remains true today, then why are the differences between rocks on the moon and Earth so small?

"What you are looking for is a much bigger difference, because that is what the rest of the Solar System looks like based on meteorite measurements," Professor Alex Halliday of Oxford University told BBC.

"It raises the question of how well the meteorites from Mars and the asteroid belt in the outer Solar System are representative of the inner Solar System? We do not have samples from Mercury or Venus,” he added. “They may well be similar to the Earth. If that is the case then all the arguments over the similarities of the Earth and the Moon fall away.”

If scientists do conclude that the differences are significant enough to justify the theory that Theia crashed into the Earth to form the moon, then it’s possible they will also have to rethink the idea that other planets and meteorites have very different fingerprints of their own.

Other scientists, such as Professor Rob de Meijer of Netherlands’ Groningen University, said the new research did nothing to alter his belief – that a buildup of nuclear fuel within the Earth caused an explosion in its crust and mantle, and that the moon was formed from this material. He said the only way to really discover the moon’s composition would be to return and explore rocks hidden further underground.

"The difference is too small," he said to BBC. "We don't know how the Moon was formed. What we need are manned missions to the Moon and a search for rocks deeper under the lunar surface, that have not been polluted by meteorite impacts and the solar wind."

140606165419-pepper-customer-story-bodyEver feel like no one really understands you? Well "Pepper" could be about to change all that.

That's because Pepper is actually a robot and touted as the world's first with the ability to read emotions.

The humanoid robot -- which looks slightly like a shrunken Michelin Man -- was unveiled to curious onlookers in Tokyo stores on Friday by SoftBank, a Japanese telecom giant and Aldebaran, a French robotics company.

Pepper doesn't look much like its name. Standing under four-feet tall with a tablet computer mounted to its chest, it has human-like hands and a mermaid-like lower torso — though its toddler-like voice seems incongruous with this state-of-the-art facade.

Despite the high-pitched voice, Pepper is able to converse about everything from the weather, to more sophisticated topics like the latest fluctuations in the stock markets.

Yet the great differentiator is the fact Pepper is fully interactive, making eye contact when meeting people.

Pepper is "the first robot to read human emotions," said Softbank's CEO Masayoshi Son told reporters at a press conference in the Japanese capital on Thursday.

"Robots like Pepper are adding a new dimension in our daily lives. They would change it with the same magnitude as the PC, Internet and mobile phones did."

How Pepper reads your moods

Using its emotion recognition functions, Pepper can react to people in its vicinity -- making jokes, dancing and even rapping (in Japanese), as it did in an onstage demonstration on Thursday.

Pepper can analyze facial expressions, human voice tones and gestures, then react autonomously through algorithms, its creators say.

"Our vision is to create an affectionate robot that can understand people's feelings. Then autonomously, it will take action," said Son.

He envisions robots playing roles in education, healthcare and entertainment, but their primary goal isn't to work in the industry like existing robots.

"Our's is not aiming for productivity, but rather at the home or store, where we provide fun and entertainment," Son said.

Pepper is designed to be a family robot -- perhaps more like a sleeker version of Rosie, the household robot on the cartoon "The Jetsons."

"Pepper is powered by love inside a family," Son said. "Not only is he making jokes, making them laugh. The robot acts out at its own expense, in natural disaster, it can help them and also comfort those people who are sad or lonely, encourage them or make them laugh."

When Pepper goes on sale

Pepper goes on sale in Japan for around US$2,000 in February 2015. For now, several Peppers are at Softbank stores in Tokyo for spectators to visit. The creators say before releasing Pepper for sale, they want the robots to accumulate more knowledge, to evolve and get more sophisticated in its interactions with humans.

"Several thousand Peppers are going to learn at the store," Son said. "Everything they learned and gained, is going to be accumulated into the cloud-based service. So that can be accelerating the evolution of the collective wisdom."

Pepper functions through cloud-based artificial intelligence.

SoftBank and Aldebaran envision the robot being sold overseas eventually. After all, Pepper is quite the polyglot, speaking 17 languages.

cristina-scuccia

ROME – Italy’s singing nun, Sister Cristina Scuccia, is the winner of “The Voice of Italy,” after becoming a global sensation starting in March when her rendition of Alicia Keys’ “No One” in the talent show’s blind audition got more than 50 million hits on YouTube and appreciative Tweets from Keys herself and Whoopi Goldberg.

On Thursday night, wearing her nun’s habit, crucifix around her neck, and plain black shoes, the 25-year-old Sicilian nun won Italy’s version of “The Voice” with 62.3 percent of the vote.

“My presence here is not up to me, it’s thanks to the man upstairs,” she said before reciting the Lord’s Prayer onstage.

Sister Scuccia, who won a recording contract with Universal, was coached by Italian rapper J-Ax. She beat long-haired male rocker Giacomo Voli.

As the singing nun’s popularity soared in Italy and around the world, her performances on stage on Italy’s “The Voice,” aired by pubcster RAI, have included a cover of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” (see video), Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” and “What a Feeling.” From the studio audience her fellow sisters cheered her  on, often breaking out into dance moves themselves.

Scuccia, a member of the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family reportedly took her vows in 2010 after a rebellious adolescence. She has been training as a singer for years and previously auditioned for several other TV talent shows, including X-Factor in Italy.

She has said she was inspired to audition for “The Voice” by the words of Pope Francis to “get out onto the streets” in his call for a Catholic Church that is closer to common folk and their everyday lives

10tsdI WAS SNORKELING off the Pacific Coast of Mexico with my friend and former dive instructor, Ceci, when I saw what looked like a spiny tetherball with a beak spiraling from the depths towards the surface. I lifted my mask and Ceci lifted hers, preempting my question.

“It’s a blowfish,” she said, matter-of-factly. Then, “All fish are weird.”

To wit: the whale shark. Not a whale at all, and only technically a shark (with a cartilaginous skeleton, gill slits, and pectoral fins it belongs to the shark family of fish), the whale shark has an enormous mouth with up to 350 rows of tiny teeth and 10 filter pads. Like baleen whales, they’re filter-feeders and eat by straining algae, plankton, and krill from the seawater, but their name more likely derives from the fact that at sizes of up to 40 feet long and 47,000 pounds, they are the largest fish on the planet, and can live for up to 80 years. Weird, right?

Whale sharks live in all tropical and warm temperate seas, so the regions where you can swim with them — they’re known to be gentle with divers — are numerous. Whale shark numbers, however, are dwindling; the animal is on the endangered species list.

The migration patterns of whale sharks aren’t fully understood, but there are ways to increase your chances of a sighting. Where you catch up with the whale sharks will depend on the time of year and the region you’re in.

7834239World Environment Day ('WED') is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

History
It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 on the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973. Since then it is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme.

World Environment Day falls in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall (rainy season) in the Southern Hemisphere, and midsummer in the Tropical regions.

"Stockholm was without a doubt the landmark event in the growth of international environmentalism", writes John McCormick in the book Reclaiming Paradise. "It was the first occasion on which the political, social and economic problems of the global environment were discussed at an intergovernmental forum with a view to actually taking corrective action."

Celebrity Endorsements
Media and celebrities have encouraged World Environment Day Celebrations by endorsing and taking part in it. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) goodwill ambassadors including supermodel Gisele Bündchen are sending an SOS to the world to take action for World Environment Day 2014 by joining one of their teams to combat climate change. Their call to action, Message in the Bottle, asks individuals around the world to join one of the celebrities’ teams and make a difference by pledging to take action in support of World Environment Day, which culminates globally on 5 June 2014.

Media campaigns
Community Radio Stations (CRS) in all over Nepal Republic launches the Campaign. All the National Tv & Radio Breakings are replaced by Environment Slogans and Informations. Nepal Government launches various programs in collabration with UNESCO. It also sends the Gurkha Army out of barracks on the road to clean the environment and for afforestation programmes where all the media personalles also gathers giving the live coverage.

Zee News launched 'My Earth, My Duty’ campaign. This campaign has entered the Limca Book of Records for a novel effort: for planting more than 73 lakh (7,300,000) trees in one single day across 34 cities and 2.5 lakh (250,000) villages on 25 August 2010. NDTV launched "Greenathon" Campaign. This campaign was launched in the year 2008 and served as India’s first ever-nationwide campaign to save the environment.

Children's efforts
In Nepal Republic all the Students from Grade 1 to A level are compulsory to attend the afforestation programmes on their respective locality with the supervision of SOS Villages and Nepal Government. Many Arts and drawing competitions are held on environmental day and Nepal Government declares the Scholorship for 15 Students from every cities who have major contribu tion for the environment mainly selected from Madhesi, an backward Community in Nepal. In 2012, Project Earth, an Online Eco Platform teamed up with Rio+20 and Launched ' World Environment Day Global School Contest 2012 ' to promote awareness among today's youth. Every country had a winner. Project GreenOman,The winner from Oman, was an Eco organization founded by Hridith Sudev and is a full fledged kid's Eco Organization now
