salomonailandAn 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami that killed five people but didn't threaten the wider region.

Four elderly people and one child died after the roughly 1-meter (3-feet) high wave hit the Santa Cruz Islands, an eastern region of the Solomon Islands, said Augustine Bilve, a director at a hospital in Lata, the main town in the area.

The strong waves appeared to have caused damage and disruption at the local airport and nearby villages.

Bilve said that some patients were being relocated, but the hospital was intact.

"Our staff in Temotu province felt the quake and within five minutes there were a number of wave surges, which flooded the runway there," said Andrew Catford, the program director in the Solomon Islands for the humanitarian group World Vision.

World's biggest earthquakes since 1900

World Vision said it was still trying to gauge the damage from the tsunami in the area, adding that "it is likely that several villages close stacks.nz.quake.gito the airport have been severely impacted."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami warning for several countries in the area, including Papua New Guinea and Fiji. But the center later canceled the alert after reassessing the relevant data.

It also called off a tsunami watch it had sent out for a larger number of countries in the region such as New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia.

The center of the quake was located near the Santa Cruz Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. It was initially reported to be 3.6 miles deep, but that was later revised to a depth of 17.8 miles.

Precautionary measures taken in the region

Authorities elsewhere in the region took precautionary measures following news of the quake.

The New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Management warned people along certain areas of the country's west coast to stay out of the water and away from the shore.

Japanese authorities issued advisories that small sea level changes could affect the country's entire eastern coastline Wednesday.

The New Caledonia High Commission in the capital of Noumea ordered the immediate evacuation of coastal residents on the eastern coast of New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands.

The main quake was preceded by a 6.3-magnitude quake in the region and was followed by several others, the largest of which had a magnitude of 6.6, the USGS said.

In 2007, an 8.1-magnitude quake struck in the western part of the Solomon Islands, setting off a tsunami. At least 52 people died as a result of the disaster and thousands of others were left homeless.

cuale paradise

There was a time, not so long ago, when Puerto Vallarta had no electricity and no running water in the houses. For the district called “Caloso and Canoas”, which follows the River Cuale in the hilly area east of the Zona Romantica, this has been a reality untill the late 90’s.

During this time the people would take advantage of the river for bathing and washing clothes, as well as for fishing its sweet water shrimps and fish (of which there was definitley a greater abundancy than there is today).

Acyborg integration 600Stop me if you’ve heard any of this before. As computers keep getting faster and more powerful and robots keep advancing at a breakneck pace, most human jobs will be obsolete. But instead of simply being pink-spilled, humans will get brand new jobs which pay better and give them a lot of free time to enjoy the products of our civilization’s robotic workforce, create, and invent. It’s a futuristic dream that’s been around for almost a century in one form or another, and it has been given an update in the latest issue of Wired. Robots will take our jobs and we should welcome it because we’ll eliminate grunt work in favor of more creative pursuits, say today’s tech prophets, and in a way they’re right. Automation is one of the biggest reasons why a lot of people can’t go out and get jobs that once used to be plentiful and why companies are bringing in more revenue with far fewer workers. Machines have effectively eliminated millions of jobs.

When we get to the second part of this techno-utopian prediction, however, things aren’t exactly as rosy. Yes, new and higher paying jobs have emerged, especially in IT, but they’re closed to a lot of people who simply don’t have the skills to do these new jobs or for whom no position exists in their geographical vicinity. Automation doesn’t just mean that humans get bumped up from an obsolete job, it means there are fewer jobs overall for humans. And when it comes to positions in which dealing with reams of paperwork and mundane office tasks is the order of the day, having computers and robots in them eliminates internships college students or young grads can use to build up a resume and get their feet in the door. They’re now stuck in a Catch-22 where they’re unable to get experience and more education puts them further behind thanks to a machine. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is not what the techno-utopians had in mind.

Of course humans will have to move up into more abstract and creative jobs where robots have no hope of ever competing with them, otherwise the economy will collapse as automated factory after automated factory churns out trillions of dollars worth of goods that no one can buy since some 70% of the population no longer has a job. And at 70% unemployment, every last horrible possibility that sends societal collapse theory survivalists screaming themselves awake at night has a high enough chance of happening that yours truly would also start seriously considering taking up gun hoarding and food stockpiling as really good hobbies. Basically, the failure to get adjusted to the growing cybernetic sector of the workforce simply isn’t an option. Companies, no matter how multinational, would be able to eliminate so many positions that the robot takeover of human jobs with no replacements in sight that it wouldn’t start feeling the economic pain as they hit maximum market saturation and can go no further because no one can buy their wares.

But all these good news aside, just because we’ll have time to adjust to an ever more automated economy and feel the need to do so, doesn’t mean that the transition will be easy and people will not be left behind. Without a coordinated effort by wealthy nations to change the incentives they give their companies and educational institutions, we’ll be forced to ride out a series of massive recessions in which millions of jobs are shed, relatively few are replaced, and the job markets will be slowly rebuilt around new careers because a large chunk of the ones lost are now handed off to machines or made obsolete by an industry’s contraction after the crisis. And this means that when facing the machine takeover of the economy we have two realistic choices. The first is to adapt by taking action now and bringing education and economic incentives in line with what the postindustrial markets are likely to become. The second is to try and ride out the coming storm, adapting in a very economically painful ad hoc manner through cyclical recessions. Unlike we’re being told, the new, post-machine jobs won’t just naturally appear on their own…

The Reumofán Plus he adds, contains dexamethasone, a powerful anti-inflammatory that can cause adverse effects, such as gastric ulcer with possible perforation and severe bleeding, emotional disorders, and osteoporosis.the Health Regulation Department provides Phone lines to report the existence of the product.

finally says, that the staff of the state agency conducted verification visits to 465 different places of which over 20 of them secured 263 bottles of 30 tablets each, and  12 more creams of 150 grams.

FDA warns of dangerous dietary supplements

The Food and Drug Administration has received dozens of reports about harmful side effects - including stroke and death - linked to two dietary supplements currently on the market, Reumofan Plus and Reumofan Plus Premium.

The agency has issued a safety alert to warn consumers about the dangers of the supplements. They are both marketed as natural dietary supplements but the FDA claims they have potentially dangerous active ingredients that aren't listed on their labels. The supplements are used to treat arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle pain, bone cancer and a host of other ailments.

They are manufactured in Mexico by Riger Naturals, but sold in the United States in some stores, Internet sites and flea markets. Most are labeled in Spanish but there could be versions with English labels.

The FDA is working closely with the Mexican government and says the Mexican Ministry of Health issued a health warning to the public and ordered Riger Naturals to recall the products.

In June, the FDA issued its first initial warning to consumers about Reumofan Plus based on preliminary laboratory tests. But after receiving increased reports of health problems, confirming drug ingredients and finding similar ingredients in Reumofan Plus Premium, officials decided to issue a second warning.

"Consumers taking these products are urged to immediately consult with their doctor to safely discontinue use of the product," said FDA spokeswoman Sarah Clark-Lynn. "The hidden drug ingredients in Reumofan Plus and Reumofan Plus Premium can lead to serious, even life-threatening health consequences. The longer the product is taken, the higher the risk of these serious health consequences."

The FDA says its lab analysis found prescription drug ingredients including dexamethasone, diclofenac sodium and methocarbamol in the supplements.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation. It can cause high blood sugar, injury to bone and muscle and psychiatric problems. Taking high doses of the drug or stopping it suddenly can cause low blood pressure and low blood sugar, fever, dizziness, nausea and fatigue.

"Abrupt discontinuation of corticosteroids may cause serious withdrawal syndrome and life-threatening adrenal suppression," Clark-Lynn said. "These risks depend upon a number of variables that need to be assessed by a health care professional, and medical intervention may be necessary. Only a licensed health care professional can evaluate patients for the risk, or confirm the existence, of adrenal suppression."

Diclofenac sodium is an NSAID - a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Taken improperly, it can increase the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) problems including ulcers, bleeding, fatal rupture of the stomach and intestines and cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.

Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxer that can cause sleepiness and dizziness and affect a person's ability to drive a car or operate machinery. Equally concerning, the FDA says, is the fact that these ingredients could interact with other medications and cause serious health
