Puerto Vallarta, Jal. - Ms. Sandra Wicks, representing South Puerto Vallarta Rotary Club, and Eleanor Hawthorn, representing Anchorage Canada Rotary Club, accompanied by the Vice President of this altruistic organization, Luis Ignacio Bobadilla, awarded scholarships and a laptop to selected students.
Besides the scholarships which Puerto Vallarta Sur Rotary club periodically hands out, a laptop computer, donated by RC Woodson de Doyon Corporation, was also given to Roberto Miguel Ortiz, a high school student; they also donated notebooks which were distributed among the students.
The event took place early morning at UNIVA Campus. The Dean of the University, Luis Ignacio Zuniga Bobadilla, welcome the representative of Puerto Vallarta Sur Rotary Club, who for the last twenty years have kept the Scholarship program going, to benefit children, teen agers and adults of Puerto Vallarta. Their support to the vulnerable people of this area is of great significant.
Families of the 23 scholarship recipients expressed their gratitude and acknowledge the work of the Rotary Club. On different interviews, after the event, Club members reiterated their commitment to continue with the program for as long as the students maintain outstanding grades, (9 and 10’s). This is the main requisite to receive this kind of economic support.
The gratitude was reflected on student’s faces. They all qualified for this program and they are happy to be provided with the monetary means to reach their educational goals.
Many students do not have the economic means to be able to continue with their studies; but for more than twenty years, many of these students have benefited from the program. It is worth mentioning that Puerto Vallarta Sur Rotary Club and Univa Puerto Vallarta have joined forces to also give scholarships for BA studies to those students who meet their criteria.
As mentioned above, this ambitious program was started more than twenty years ago: in 1992, with the donation of two scholarships. At that time, Miguel Ayala was president of Puerto Vallarta Sur Rotary Club. Only one scholarship was given in 1993. By the school period 1998-99, the program had gotten stronger, and 12 scholarships were distributed. A year later the number was raised to 30. Under Jesus Anaya Vizcaino Leyva 680,000 pesos were donated for scholarships, backpacks and other incentives having to do with education.
