The topography of the north coast region of Jalisco virtually saved Puerto Vallarta from the effects of the Tropical Storm "Manuel", that during the weekend crossed Banderas Bay as a low pressure center just 10 miles west of the city.

Víctor Manuel Cornejo López, meteorologist of the University Center of the Coast (CUC) of the University of Guadalajara campus Vallarta, explained that after touching ground in Manzanillo, "Manuel" traveled several municipalities in southern Jalisco until exiting in Puerto Vallarta and flowing out through the center of Banderas bay.

He said that the weather phenomenon was accompanied by strong winds that did not cause extensive damage in the region, due to the transversal sierra running from El Tuito (head of the neighboring municipality of Cabo Corrientes) to the mountain municipality area of Talpa de Allende and Mascota, that acted as a shield, "as a sort of breakwater".

"The central zone of 'Manuel' passed 10 kilometers west of Puerto Vallarta, in the bay, but it passed as a low pressure center (...) However, the transversal sierra running from El Tuito to Mascota acts as a shield, like a breakwater but of winds, and that is what prevents further damages".

He said that the weather phenomenon happened in the middle of Banderas Bay with medium and high levels, after the cauda or tail of the tropical disturbance was accompanied by clouds and rains that were rising this Tuesday before the state of Sinaloa and heading to Baja California Sur, even with the possibility of regrouping to become a hurricane again.

Once the risk passed, that at times threatened Puerto Vallarta during the weekend and, in general, the coastal municipalities of the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, Victor Manuel Cornejo said "Puerto Vallarta is a privileged place for its location, due to the transversal sierra, it is protected against land cyclones, because the sierra works like a screwdriver for cyclones, making it difficult for them to arrive, although it is not impossible".
