The Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit (Mexorc), will be carried out in Puerto Vallarta from March 23rd to 29th as one of the most important world class events in the sailing environment of the west coast in the American Continent; for its 2014 edition, around 70 ships are expected with more than 500 competitors, visitors and spectators.
The director of municipal Tourism, Carlos Gerard Guzmán, informed that Mexorc starts the day after the end of the San Diego-Puerto Vallarta Regatta organized by the San Diego Yacht Club. It has a length of one week and it consists of six days of competition, with an intermediate rest day. He said that according to the organizers, the waters of Banderas Bay will become full of life with the 500 competitors on board the sails of in between 34 and 80 feet. A day of tests consists of a long regatta or two short ones; when these are finalized, the sailors will go to the marina to enjoy cocktails and canapés courtesy of the sponsoring establishments, to then head to the preferred restaurants and clubs.
The Mexorc regatta is a world class event that has its beginnings in the 60's with the San Diego-Acapulco regattas, in which sailors from the Pacific Coast of the United States and Mexico participate.
In the mid 70's a group of sailing enthusiasts got together to give life to the new concept of the Mexorc Series: ocean circuits with a great level. Thus was born a new opportunity so that Mexicans could measure their strength against U.S, Canadian and European ships in waters of our country.
During the more than three decades that the circuit has, they have participated in very famous ships like the Pywacket of Roy Disney, Tomahawk of John Arens, Sorcery of Jake Wods with a crew of 25 sailors, Mongoose, Taxi Dancer, among others.
The first Mexorc regatta coincided with the Las Hadas Hotel inauguration, great touristic development of Manzanillo imagined by Don Atenor Patiño, who donated a golden trophy for its first edition.
In time, the competitions were modified until they coincided with the arrival of two great sailing competitions in the United States: The Puerto Vallarta Regatta (PVRace), organized by the Yacht Club of San Diego; and the other by Marina del Rey in California that came down a year to Manzanillo and another to Puerto Vallarta in an alternate way.
Currently the San Diego-Puerto Vallarta Regatta and Mexorc join efforts so that its almost 500 participants remain in Puerto Vallarta and become part of Mexorc.
