The head of the Ministry of Health of Jalisco (SSJ), Jaime Agustin Gonzalez Alvarez led Wednesday's ceremony marking the National Day of the Altruistic Blood Donor. In the event he said that the Blood Transfusion Center of Jalisco (CJTS) registered an increase in altruistic donation of blood, from 7 percent recorded last year to 20 percent today.
González Álvarez explained that this situation is due to the support received from some companies and "significantly, through the Federation of University Students of the University of Guadalajara, which has been following us and which has been more in contact with us. The youth come to donate blood altruistically".
The health secretary said that the interaction of his agency with the industry sector will continue in order to get voluntary participation.
He also clarified that the celebration around the altruistic donation is marked in the calendar for August 25, and he stressed the importance of giving a little blood to help others, because any person, at some point in its life, could require a transfusion. As an example, Alvarez Gonzalez himself donated blood at the end of the formal ceremony.
Meanwhile, the owner of CJTS, Maria Guadalupe Becerra Leyva said after the celebration of the International Day of Voluntary Donations, that two months ago there has been an increase in donations through 14 extramural campaigns, capturing in this period, 355 units of blood. "Today we reported 20 percent of charitable giving. The goal for next year is 30 percent", he said. He also assured that this objective can be achieved with the help of college students.
Jalisco collects on average 130 thousand units of blood per year, corresponding to 9.2 percent of the national collection, of which 70 percent comes from institutional blood banks: IMSS, ISSSTE, civil Hospitals and CETS.
In the State there are 35 blood banks, of which five are institutional and the rest belong to private companies.
