xtrailbike 1 mini.jpg.pagespeed.ic.FaJVy7dcnTSayulita has a new jungle trail, designed specifically for mountain bikers, hikers, and joggers. Javier Chavez, owner of Wildmex, and an avid mountain biker and adventure seeker, is behind this new and exciting development. Javier tells El Sayulero more about this new trail, the various tours he offers, and much more.

You’ve offered mountain bike tours for the last 9 years in Sayulita. Why put more time and energy into these type of tours now?

Well, Sayulita is growing and people are now coming to town for more than just surfing. We have so many mountains and so much jungle that surrounds the town. I think we should use it and make the most of it.

How long have you been working on this new Sayulita trail? Is it complete?

The current length of the trail is 3km and it took about 3 months to finish. We are currently adding another 2km, which should be finished by October. When it is done, it will be a complete 5km loop.

You offer three guided mountain bike tours in and around Sayulita. Will you tell me about these tours?

The first tour (Ride #1) is the Punta Sayulita trail. This is for beginners and is a dirt road and single track trail, meaning it is the width of one biker or hiker. The second tour (Ride #2) is Las Lomas to Sayulita and is an intermediate ride, mostly ATV and single track trail. Bikers are taken by vehicle to Las Lomas and then bike to San Pancho, check out the town, and then bike back to Sayulita. The third tour (Ride #3) is Monkey Mountain, which is all single track, going up and down the mountain. It’s steep, technical, super fun, and mostly for advanced riders.

Tell me about your hiking tours/trails?

Our hiking trails are basically the same as our mountain bike trails. But, on a hiking tour we cover a shorter distance since you can cover a lot more distance on a bike. We offer tours in the same zones, but slightly different. For Punta Sayulita we would hike approximately 1.5 hours, we’d hike San Pancho to Sayulita rather than Las Lomas to Sayulita, and we’d hike up Monkey Mountain and back down, rather than going all over the mountain.

What can you tell me about the Wildmex guides?

The guides are all passionate about hiking, biking, and nature. They are knowledgeable about plants and animals and they are trained in first aid. Also, they all speak English.

Is there also an option to rent mountain bikes and head out solo? If so, will you tell me more about this?

Yes. People have the option of renting a mountain bike by the hour or even renting it for the entire week. There are a lot of people who come and rent a bike for the week as a way to stay in shape. When people rent a bike, we loan them a phone with a GPS system that mounts on the handlebars of the bike. So, there’s no way they can get lost on the trails.

What feedback have you gotten about the new Sayulita mountain bike trail?

We’ve only been running the new trail for a few months, but we’ve heard that people really like it.

You’d also like to open more new trails in the area. I’d love to hear more about that.

We’d like to open more because there’s so much space around here for trails. I enjoy hiking and biking and opening more trails is like creating my own activity to do.

Aside from mountain biking and hiking, what other Sayulita tours does Wildmex offer?

We offer surfing, paddle boarding, snorkeling at the Marietta’s, and we’re also adding a new snorkeling tour at Rincon de Guayabitos.

Anything else you would like to add?

The goal right now is to build and maintain these Sayulita jungle trails. So, 100% of the profit from mountain bike tours this year and next year will go back towards that project.

12 26 2015 Punta Mita NoFa 600 pxls MBText

Puerto Vallarta is not one of those tropical destinations that just gradually warm up after the preferable climate of winter. No we just sort of start warming up mid May, then BOOM it´s June and it´s hot and humid. Now I say hot and humid to the California types, to the Houston, Florida and other humid areas, PV is mild to your summer standards. But when it does get warm, the warm currents come with it and with the currents come Puerto Vallarta´s Fishing Reputation as being one of the top ten fishing locations in the world! Right now Puerto Vallarta is living up to that reputation with abundant ¨Bucket List¨ trophy gamefish and happy Anglers, YeHa!

06 30 2016 Magnifico 5 Black Marlin 500 pxls MBTextThe report this week is much the same as last week, with small variances that make a difference. At Corbeteña it´s been another spectacular week. Yellowfin tuna are no longer over 100 lbs, what we´re seeing now is Spinner Dolphin moving into the area and with Spinners we normally find Tuna running with them. And they´re running anywhere from 20 lbs to 60 lbs. Smaller yes, but great tasting and large numbers of these smaller succulent YF Tuna are fun to catch, they don´t take hours to boat, the meat has a great flavor and remember everything counts in large amounts! Then we have Blue Marlin starting at 400 lbs and up, Black Marlin at 600 lbs, Striped Marlin to 225 lbs, Sailfish of trophy size are picking up in increasing numbers, Amber Jacks at 50 lbs, Cubera Snappers to 60 lbs and more! Bait is off the hook and readily abundant, get the bait in the morning, but check the bait in the area when you arrive at the fishing grounds to see what baits are in the area. Mahi Mahi or Dorado are moving into the area now, not many to speak of around the rock, be patient, next week this should change, more to come. With the fishing this good, it´s insane to wait for things to get ¨better¨.… YF Tuna of any larger sizes, that would be better but not much… stay tuned.

El Banco, normally these two areas will be about the same, with small differences. This week is no different with the simple fact they´re seeing Yellowfin Tuna to 60 lbs when you find the spinners. Remember, if you´re looking for big fish, they´re normally larger at El Banco if they´re ¨there¨. El Banco can be temperamental, but for now, it´s well worth the time, fuel and verbal abuse you´ll receive from the ¨little woman¨ for taking off on the spot to catch some world class fishing! And don´t forget the area in between these two locations, many a tournament winning fish have been caught ¨in between¨.

Those with a limited budget will still find world class action around the point off Punta Mita. Eight to twelve miles off the point on a 285 heading you´ll find nice sized Dorado in the 25 to 35 lb range (mostly 25 lbs). Sailfish are everywhere and surprisingly thick, Striped Marlin to over 225 lbs. Rooster fish in the surf line and around the reefs, but not like two weeks ago. Still this eight hour trip is affordable and full of action! Around the Marietta Islands you´ll still find the normal players of Bonito to 35 lbs, Jack Crevalls to 40 lbs, Amber Jacks to 30 lbs and with some luck you could run into a Dorado or Sailfish.

Inside the bay we´re about the same as last week, but a little different. It´s the subtle differences that make all the difference. One strange thing is Sailfish are all over the bay! Now I can remember reports where I have said it´s impossible to find Sailfish in the bay, well these days I have changed my tune. I know of at least eight Sailfish that were brought in and many more hook-ups that were lost. Right now you´ll find Sailfish around Los Arcos, Mid Bay, La Cruz, and points in between! Jack Crevalls are still the dominant species to 45 lbs. The trash line is in when we have rain and small Dorado of 10 lbs have been feeding on this organic trail mix nicely. Bonito to 35 lbs, Football YF Tuna to 40 lbs at Yelapa, Snapper in front of the River mouths with Snook to 25 lbs. The list goes on, you can´t lose fishing in the bay so grab the family and have some fun.

Water temperatures are still a perfect 84 degrees. Around the bay the water is mostly clear green, not bad, the fish don`t seem to mind, but once you get five miles off the point of Punta Mita it´s all High Visibility Blue water! Baits: most of the Marlin this week were caught on dead bait (surprised me) and lures. Marlin like the Blue with pink marking or Petrelaros of green, brown, purple skirts! Sailfish are looking for Green with Yellow color combinations. Start with these colors in your pattern. Bite: It´s been a moving target lately, the last few days it´s been 11:00 to 1:00 before they seem to get serious about taking baits, so sleep in, be patient and it will all pay-off amigos.

In Summary: With the way things are forming up, it looks like we could have larger and more abundant Dorado in the coming days. Remember it was August last year before we saw ten pound babies while San Diego got the bulk of our Dorado.

This year it looks like we´ll be in a more normal pattern. Striped Marlin in the area to me is a little surprising since they normally like the cooler waters of Cabo. Last I heard Cabo waters were still chilly so we´ll consider this a ¨windfall¨ and be thankful in PV for that. Very seldom will you have the three different species of Marlin, we have all in the same area at the same time. Sailfish are thick and will be thick until January, but not normally in the bay!! Yellowfin Tuna it´s still a little early for us, but we´re knocking on the door for Prime time Tuna Fishing so stay tuned. And as always we´ve got some great summer deals for family fishing so call us and let’s get you on the water!

Right now we´re running a special for the month of July, 8 hrs, four people max, Ice, bait, captain, crew, licenses, on insured boats with English speaking captains is only $250 usd for a ¨Full Service¨ fishing Trip. You´ll have a shot at Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Rooster fish in the surf and around reefs, and with some luck Dorado. For those looking to just get on the water and do some basic fishing our 4 hr trip from Marina Vallarta to Los Arcos trolling for smaller game fish is only $195 usd, four people, same as the 250 trip but you´ll be limited on distance. Air fares are cheap, hotels are all running specials and the fishing grounds for the most part is still empty.

Until next time, don´t forget to ¨Kiss Your Fish¨. . .

Our Best Fishing in Two Years, It´s Fish City in PV!

  • But he likely won’t serve prison time for tax fraud.Under Spanish law, a prison sentence of less than two years can be served under probation, meaning Lionel Messi and his father are unlikely to go to jail.

Barcelona’s Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison and fined 2 million euros ($2.2 million) after being found guilty of three counts of tax fraud, a court in the Spanish city said on Wednesday.

The court handed the same jail sentence to the Argentine soccer player’s father, Jorge, and fined him 1.5 million euros. However, in Spain it is customary that those sentenced to under two years for non-violent crimes do not serve time in jail.

Messi, 29, and his father were accused by the Spanish tax office of defrauding the government of 4.2 million euros ($4.7 million) in tax between 2007 and 2009.

The court found that they had used a web of shell companies to evade taxes on income from the player’s image rights.

Messi, five-times World Player of the Year, said during the trial that he had no knowledge of the dealings and that his father had control over his financial affairs. But the court said this was not enough for him to avoid charges.

The defendants can appeal to the supreme court, the Barcelona local court said in its statement.

Messi and his father had already paid 5 million euros to the tax authorities as a “corrective” measure after formal investigations were opened.

The footballer is 10th on Forbes Magazine’s list of the world’s highest-earning athletes over the past decade, with an estimated income of $350 million during this period. ($1 = 0.9034 euros) (Reporting by Angus Berwick and Emma Pinedo; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.- With the “Chase to Copacabana” over, it is now the “fight for finals” for the men’s players on the international Beach Volleyball circuit as the leaderboard is taking shape to determine which teams will qualify for the mid-September SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals.

The SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals, which offers the richest first-place purses in international history with $100,000 awarded to the men’s and women’s winners, will be played September 8-13 at a site to be announced in the coming weeks. The top eight-ranked pairs per gender from the international circuit plus two “wild cards” will advance to the event with a maximum of two teams per country.

With three-plus events left before the September finale, excluding the Rio 2016 Olympic Games where points are not rewarded, the $800,000 Porec Major is the 18th of 21 men’s event on the 2015-2016 FIVB World Tour schedule with the final three stops featuring “big-point” tournaments in Switzerland (Gstaad, July 5-10), Austria (Klagenfurt, July 26-31) and the United States (Long Beach, August 23-28).

Entering play here Friday at the Porec Major, only one of the 10 teams that participated in the 2015 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals in the United States on Fort Lauderdale beach ln south Florida is ranked among the top eight pairs on the 2015-2016 FIVB World Tour ranking list. Points to determine the 2016 field began last October with the Puerto Vallarta Open in Mexico where Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena topped the men’s podium.

As a “wild card” entry in Fort Lauderdale, Dalhausser and Lucena are the only team from the 2015 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals men’s field ranked among the top-eight teams on the 2015-2016 international points list with 4,110 points. The Americans trail Poland’s Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak (4,640 points) and Adrian Carambula/Alex Ranghieri of Italy (4,580). All three teams are competing this week in the Porec Major and started pool play Thursday by winning their first two matches each.

Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil, who defeated Dalhausser and Lucena in two sets last October in Fort Lauderdale to win the $100,000 first-place prize, are currently 14th on the 2015-2016 FIVB World Tour ranking list with 3,140. The Brazilians are within striking distance of moving into the top eight as the No. 7 (Markus Bockermann/Lars Fluggen, Germany, 3,450 points) and No. 8 (Youssef Krou/Edouard Rowlandson, France, 3,290) are not competing this week in the Porec Major.

Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel of Poland (3,280 points), Adrian Gavira/Pablo Herrera of Spain (3,160), Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen of The Netherlands (3,150), Ben Saxton/Chaim Schalk of Canada (3,000) and Evandro Goncalves/Pedro Solberg of Brazil (2,850) are also competing in the Porec Major and in position to move into the top eight spots on the 2015-2016 FIVB World Tour ranking list.

All, except for Fijalek and Prudel, competed in the 2015 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals. Evandro and Pedro defeated Brouwer and Meeuwsen for the Fort Lauderdale bronze medal. After Fort Lauderdale last October in Puerto Vallarta, Brouwer and Meeuwsen started their 2015-2016 international campaign by placing second to Dalhausser and Lucena in the Mexican event.

About 50 kids in Sayulita are being trained in SUP and Paddleboard, in fact, they already have an invitation to participate in the 2017 World SUP Junior Championships.

National SUP “pick” Javier “Bicho” Jiménez and professional paddler and surfer Shelby de la Rosa Taylor founded the Sayulita Jr. SUP Team, a program for children and youths in the Riviera Nayarit’s Capital of Surf in order to encourage new champions in Mexico.

“We began this program because we saw a need to help active, healthy, productive youngsters,” said US trainer Shelby del Rosa Taylor. “SUP changed our lives and we decided to teach them everything we learned as professional athletes so they can become champions.”

The program includes physical training in the water and on the beach, plus lessons in technique, yoga, nutrition and everyday values such as respect, dedication, perseverance, fellowship, sacrifice and love, among others. The kids must maintain high academic grades in order to be part of the team.

“We also teach them how to read the ocean, to swim, and surf so they can be smart and sure of themselves, as well as help others when they’re in the water,” said Javier “Bicho” Jiménez, Mexico’s SUP sub-champion of the world, who will be training the kids and youths as he prepares for the 2017 World SUP Championship, where he has already secured his place.

And even though the Sayulita Jr. SUP Team is very new, they have already been invited to participate in the 2017 World Junior SUP Championship.

Click here for the team’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JRstandupmex/?fref=ts.

Shelby and “Bicho” are training around 50 kids between the ages of 6 and 16. The co-pay for each child is one thousand pesos per month and they train three times a week. There’s a sponsorship fund created by local businesses and companies in order to help talented kids with limited resources.

There’s also an Internet fund established to help these promising SUP athletes in Mexico. If you’d like to learn more about this, please visit: Www.gofundme.com/sayulitajrsupteam.

Sayulita

Surfing and Stand Up Paddle are the favored activities on these waters, where thousands of people each year get up on a board to ride a wave for the first time in their lives.

This is the coolest microdestination in the Riviera Nayarit thanks to its colorful, cosmopolitan, hippie chic style, so very inclusive and full of life. It was thanks to these unique qualities that it received the designation of Pueblo Mágico (Magical Village) on behalf of the Federal Government.

If you come to Sayulita you’re going to have to leave your diet behind, because you won’t want to miss out on the local cuisine. The most interesting meal has to be the chocobanas at the Chocobana Breakfast and the frozen fruit treats and tropical fruit drinks at Wakika are refreshing, but if you’re looking for something elegant in the dinner department, head to Don Pedros, right on the beachfront. Paninos is the place to go for the tastiest bread and you can find a great bottle of wine at the Sayulita Wine Shop. Oh, and don’t forget the shrimp tacos!

The good thing is, you can burn off the calories by renting an SUP board at Stand Up Paddle Mexico or a surfboard at Luna Azul Surf and taking a class. By the way, did you know the very best SUP surfers in Mexico are from around here?

And as for accommodations, you’ll find awesome villas and small hotels in the mountains, although camping out for a night (or several) is a total hit.

Here the local artists will surprise you with their unique creations, where they mix the traditional with the contemporary. Musts include shopping at Esto Es México and Revolución del Sueño. Or, if you’re looking for some amazing Huichol traditional art, you’ll find the best at the Galería Tanana.

It’s always a party!

This is the most happening beach village in all of the Riviera Nayarit. The electrocumbia on Fridays at El Camarón is off the hook. And the bar at Don Pato across from the main plaza is tops for live music… And there’s more!
