healthfrontThe Foundation has just received a 2-year grant for $75,600 US from an anonymous international donor in order to work in alliance with the University of Guadalajara Puerto Vallarta (CUC) Medical Department on how to empower low-income families to advocate for their children’s health.

With a planning group including Lisa Schalla, CUC Medical Director Dr. Aaron Curiel, Nutritionist Eliud Salazar, Minnesota Child Health Consultant Katy Lesiak, as well as medical professionals from Bahía de Banderas and Puerto Vallarta, the objectives are to analyze the context of pediatric visits among low-income families, review and adapt existing research and tools for empowering families, and pilot program initiatives with up to 140 families in the Punta de Mita towns.

The project is based on research by Dr. Christina Bethell of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and director of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (, who will also serve as a visiting consultant.
