Mark Zuckerberg - 2Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acquired part of a Hawaiian island for $100 million to build a retreat for his family, Forbes magazine has reported.

Zuckerberg bought two adjacent expanses of land on the island of Kauai in the north of the archipelago which include a white sand beach and a former sugar plantation.

The two land purchases cover a total area of 283 hectares (700 acres).

The beach included in the land acquired by Zuckerberg was sold by Jim Pflueger, a former owner of Honda automobile dealerships in the islands.

Last year, Zuckerberg visited Hawaii to look into buying property.

Despite his attempts to maintain a low profile he was photographed dining at a burger bar and the photo made the front page of a local newspaper.

Zuckerberg announced on his Facebook account Tuesday that he and his wife, Priscilla, had donated $25 million to the U.S. government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to aid the fight against Ebola.

Forbes magazine lists Zuckerberg, 30, as the 11th richest person in the United States with a personal fortune estimated at $32 billion.
