Puerto Vallarta, Jal – Those that have experienced the work of “Pueblo es Cultura” –People is Culture – have learned to develop their artistic inclinations and to share their creativity with the community. As instructed by the Meyer, Cultural Brigades visit two communities of Puerto Vallarta each week, bringing this cultural project closer to the people.

Last week, for example, Mismaloya experienced happy and festive moments listening to the Town Music Band, watching Papos the Clown and participating in the workshops the mobile program “Pueblo es Cultura” has to offer.

Once more Vallarta Cultural Institute presented local artists and offered free workshops in spaces which has been rehabilitated and can now be used as get-together places.
At 5:00pm word went around that something was going on at the Basketball court, next to Casa Iguana Hotel. Children gather around work tables where drawing and painting lessons where being offered by artists of the category of Jose Mendoza, who was pleased to share his trade and who said that because of technology children had forgotten that they are ways to have fun and learn at the same time.
Misael, a very enthusiastic child who insists he is seven years old, but his mom says he is only five, said he likes colors and loves painting little fishes. Drawing is his favorite pass time.

“As soon as I saw paints I brought my child so he could learn and have fun. I am glad they offer free workshops; this is the second time they come to Mismaloya” expressed Rosario, Misael’s mother.

Same as Misael, eight years old Laura, approach the Reading workshop table where she discovered a book with a very attractive cover: “OZ the Magician”.

We allow them to read whatever they want to read; we have all kinds of books; we help them choose, we read with them and if they do not finish a book they like, we allow them to take it home, as long as they promise to take good care of it; explains Ernesto, person in charge of Reading workshops.

Engraving and dress making workshops were also very popular. Women who learned to cut and make pants and blouses can now design their own clothing.

The most daring children attended the Circus Arts workshop, where mime Maclovio, holding on to a rope, was teaching children how to ride a monocycle. Juggling games made everyone laugh. Soon enough the children were doing what the mime was teaching them.

A workshop on healthy and responsible sex awareness was also offered. Flyers, preservatives and personal advice were distributed among participants. This kind of workshop gives young people information on VIH. There are occasions where people hesitate to approach the topic, but our advice takes away these fears and leads them to avoid risky practices; explained a member of the staff.

The plaza was crowded with couples dancing together with Danzoneros de Adultos (Adult dancers group) to the music of Puerto Vallarta Municipal Band. The natural acoustic of the mountains were key to the broadcast of Nereidas tunes all over Mislaloya, inviting people to come and join “Pueblo es Cultura”.

At the end of the journey, children and adults took home the art work and the knowledge they had acquired in the workshops, with the promise to continue practicing the techniques at home; which is the purpose of “Pueblo es Cultura” program; a program that incentivizes the creativity of the people of Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta, Jal- With the idea of educating children and adults in matters of prevention and to learn about the work done by Lifeguards in Puerto Vallarta beaches, International Lifeguard Day was celebrated last Sunday morning.

Camarones beaches were the stage where groups of rescuers made a display of different water rescue techniques and First Aid maneuvers. Invitations to the event were extended by Puerto Vallarta’s Lifeguards.

Children participated in water rescue strategies and First Aid lessons taught by expert instructors, and later, they all enjoyed putting into practice, with the help of the Lifeguards, some of the techniques they had learned. Foot ball and volley ball games were also played at the beach for the occasion.

Lifeguard chief Esteban Gaxiola, informed that the purpose of this kind of activities which were part of the celebration, is for people to get to know the work of the lifeguards and have people be participants in learning skills that can help them save lives, and to to generate awareness of the dangers of the ocean, and at the same time, to understand why beach recommendations and signs should be obeyed.

International Lifeguard Day is celebrated on February 4 in honor of ten Argentinean rescue workers who lost their lives when, on the line of duty, were carried away by a riptide in the ocean of Mar de Plata.

Calderon Gaxiola pointed out that the group of Lifeguards was organized in 2006 with join efforts from municipal government and the Municipal Maritime Federal zone. They were given basic tools to start guarding all the beaches in the area to prevent incidents.

As the years went by, the Lifeguard group, under the coordination of Municipal of Civil Protection and Firemen, has been very successful and, thanks to their constant training and certifications in different topics, they stand out among rescue workers of other regions. They are now considered the best among the best at international level.

Puerto Vallarta is the only touristic area in Mexico that has lifeguards 24 hours a day.
