Kate del Castillo to star in English-language adaptation of Spanish novel, 'Queen of the South'
Queen of the South, a novel by Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte that has already been adapted for television in its original language, will soon get an English-language treatment to be broadcast on the USA Network, the Hollywood Reporter said.
The 63-episode Spanish-language version for the small screen featuring Mexican actress Kate del Castillo in the lead role first aired in 2011 and was a major hit for Telemundo, which, like USA Network, is owned by NBCUniversal.
"We are excited to bring this global best-selling thriller to our viewers," USA Network President Chris McCumber said. "'Queen of the South' is a suspenseful twist on a dramatic tale of love and betrayal that examines the desperate choices people make when lives are on the line."
M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller will work on the script for the pilot and also be the executive producers along with David Friendly and Pancho Mansfield, the entertainment publication added.
At the center of the book is a woman, Teresa Mendoza, who flees to the United States after her boyfriend, Raimundo Davila Parra, a.k.a. El Güero ("The Blond"), an airplane pilot for the Juárez drug cartel, is murdered in Mexico.
Teresa then reconnects with a figure from her past, Santiago Fisterra, to eliminate the head of the drug gang that is hunting her.
In the process, she learns how the drug-trafficking business operates and moves up the ranks until becoming the leader of the cartel herself.
