hispanic newspapers media

The Hispanic market is still a mystery for Hollywood and the film industry, eager to benefit from Latinos' growing purchasing power, continues to struggle to understand what is a diverse population.

Research by the Motion Pictures Association of America confirms a trend the studios know well: Hispanics like to go to the movies with their families, and they like it a lot. So much that, adjusting for their demographic presence, they are the most loyal moviegoers.

Hispanics, who are about 17 percent of the population, last year made up 32 percent of the audience for Hollywood movies in the United States. Whites, who are 63 percent of the population, accounted for 43 percent.

Blacks, about 12 percent of the U.S. population, also made up 12 percent of moviegoers.

This statistical bump is what has been labeled the Hispanic market, a generalization that covers tens of millions of people who come from different countries and have a wide variety of traditions.

"It is not a huge single market, nor is it many small markets either," Rick Ramirez, Warner Bros' vice president for Targeted Marketing, told Efe.

"There is not a single promotion formula" that works all the time with Latino audiences, he said.

Studios tackle this conundrum on a case-by-case basis, because each movie is a challenge different from the previous one.

"A Puerto Rican in New York is completely different from a Mexican in Los Angeles," according to Fabian Castro, Universal Pictures' vice president for Multicultural Marketing.

"There are some things that unify this market such as language, food, their interest in some sports, religion," he said.

Another key factor is the Spanish language and, Ramirez and Castro say, it helps to have a bilingual cast.

"A particularly effective tactic" is to have Anglo stars such as Vin Diesel and Tom Hanks making the tours of national television shows in Spanish, Castro said.

Legendary fashion designer Oscar de La Renta has died, a family member told ABC News. He was 82.

The cause of death was not immediately clear.

De La Renta, who most recently designed Amal Clooney's wedding dress, was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, De La Renta left home at 18 to study painting in Madrid. It was there he developed a love of fashion design and began an apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, who became his mentor, and then, landed a job with Lanvin in Paris.

He made his name in the early 1960s when first lady Jaqueline Kennedy frequently wore his designs, and launched his own label in the mid-1960s.

Since Kennedy, first ladies Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush all frequently wore de La Renta gowns.

His creations regularly graced red carpets and his name is one of the best known both in and outside of the industry.

Just last week, Oscar de la Renta -- the company -- announced the appointment of Peter Copping as creative director.

"Our Industry has not always done the best job when it comes to changes in design leadership. My hope is that, in leading this selection, and actively participating in the transition, I can insure the right design future for our company and brand," de la Renta said in a statement then.
His New York based company was established in 1965.

George Clooney Wedding: All the Details of Amal Alamuddin's Oscar de la Renta Dress

Amal Alamuddin has revealed the story behind her Oscar de la Renta wedding gown, speaking to Vogue magazine at her final fitting before marrying George Clooney.

"George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can't imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress," she told Vogue. "Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman."

Alamuddin went to the fitting with de la Renta and head tailor Raffaele Ilardo in late July with her mother, Baria Alamuddin, and sister, Tala Alamuddin. The lawyer and Clooney were wed this past weekend in Venice, Italy.

As a 20-something looking for his purpose, Rohan Marley found it by going back to his roots.

Marley Coffee is still a relatively small company, having churned out $6 million in revenue in 2013. But founder Rohan Marley, one of Bob Marley's children, has big plans for his Jamaican-born coffee business.

In 1999, Rohan Marley was 27. He had played linebacker for the University of Miami before moving on to the Canadian Football League. Now he found himself in New York City, wanting to do more with his life--to make a name for himself as a Marley.

Then, in a serendipitous twist, a friend contacted Marley about an opportunity to purchase a property in Jamaica. Though he'd only lived in the country as a child before moving to the U.S. at age 12, Marley had recently received $200,000 in royalties from his father's music. So he made a trip to Jamaica to look at the property, and couldn't believe what he found.

3034263-inline-i-1-bob-marleys-son-has-a-coffee-company-and-its-growing-fast

"The first thing I saw was all the fruits--apple, starfruit, pineapple--tons of fruit growing wildly, and I was seeing all the food going to waste," he recalls in his thick Jamaican accent. "While I’m walking, I'm thinking, 'Wow, this land is really fertile.' When I approached the river, I couldn’t believe my eyes that this property was in Jamaica. Here’s this beautiful piece of property for sale--I thought it was a conspiracy."

On impulse, Marley forked over his $200,000 and bought the 52-acre property. As he was walking off the land, he noticed an entire community of people standing there, trying to figure out what he was up to. "The only thing I could think to say was, 'What’s the community known for?' They said coffee, and by the time they knew my name, I was saying, 'Well alright, the community is known for coffee, so let’s get down to specifics,'" he says. "My next question: 'Do you know anything about coffee? They said, 'Yes, Mr. Marley, we’ve been farming all our lives.'"

It didn't take long for Marley to decide that he wanted to start a coffee business--one that was emphatically organic. "I’m a Rasta man, and I can’t have a piece of land that isn’t something I want to eat from," he explains.

It was a long haul from the initial coffee-growing idea to creating a functional business. Marley spent eight years applying for an export license, organic certification, and a coffee-growers license. The learning curve was steep.

"I gave my coffee to a roaster in Jamaica--I gave him 1,000 pounds--and he never returned the bag. He said it was all bad coffee," Marley remembers. "I decided this wasn't working for me. I told the farmers, 'Take all the raw materials, sell it, do what you need to do to keep the farm going.'"

Between 2004 and 2006, Marley helped his sister start a clothing company, which eventually ran out of money and shut down. Marley once again needed to reevaluate his life. He packed two duffel bags and headed to Ethiopia.

3034263-inline-i-2-bob-marleys-son-has-a-coffee-company-and-its-growing-fast

When he observed that Starbucks was buying coffee from the country, he had an idea. "I'm like, wait a minute, Starbucks is sourcing coffee from all over the world--why do I have to stick to my country Jamaica when Jamaican coffee is so expensive?" he says. "We're not trying to just appeal to a niche market."

It was there, in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, that Marley decided to rekindle his business. And once the learning curves were overcome, it turned out that Marley's land was able to produce some high-quality Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

Jammin Java, the corporation behind Marley Coffee, was created in 2009--right around the time that now-CEO Brent Toevs approached Marley about becoming a distributor. Once he learned more about the company, Toevs--a former partner at National Coffee Service & Vending--decided that he could make an impact from the inside. A year and a half ago, Marley Coffee finally began selling its high-end coffee products, which come with Bob Marley-inspired names like One Love, Lively Up!, and Get Up, Stand Up. In addition to beans, the company sells ground coffee and single-serve cups.

"We have a distinct advantage: that [Rohan] did it right, from the roots. His company started as a coffee farm, learning the coffee business from growing coffee," says Toevs.

Today, Marley Coffee still produces coffee from those 52 acres in Jamaica, but the product is expensive and there is a limited supply. The company now also buys coffee from other countries, including Ethiopia. "It's the coffee we purchase most of. It's in almost all of our blends," says Toevs.

3034263-inline-i-3-bob-marleys-son-has-a-coffee-company-and-its-growing-fast

On the farm that Marley owns, it's easy to ensure that the coffee is pesticide-free and that farmers are treated well. Doing the same on other farms requires more effort. According to Toevs, Marley Coffee teaches farmers on partner farms how to adhere to its sustainable farming practices. The company purchases all of its coffee--which is all either organic or Rainforest Alliance certified--from fair-trade co-ops.

There have been challenges as the company scales up, from $37,000 in revenue its first year, to a projection of over $10 million this year. "With any new brand come those challenges--financial, getting it on the shelf, making sure consumers take it off the shelf. Our challenges are typical challenges of any startup brand. We're going into a very competitive channel," says Toevs.

Marley Coffee is in the midst of expanding its product lines into grocery stores, both domestically and internationally. In the near future, the company plans to expand further into the single-cup space. It's also looking at the possibility of selling cold coffee drinks.

"You’re going to see Marley Coffee in higher-end hotels, in good restaurants," Toevs predicts. "We think we can get there."

a735b0e8-2337-416b-ba00-d4d92f1e7836The Chilean tourism market is seeking new experiences in Mexico beyond the Caribbean coast: these tourists are currently enjoying a very stable economy and are used to lengthy voyages, making the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta two very viable options.

The Vallarta-Nayarit joint campaign continues its promotional work in South America. This time they brought in nine of the top tour operators in Chile on a FAM trip, all of whom agreed the region is ideal for the Chilean tourist.

Coordinated by the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta convention and visitors bureaus in collaboration with Aeroméxico, the different regional managers and directors undertook several site inspections at hotels in both destinations and thoroughly enjoyed the culture and natural charm of the area.

Luis Fernando Martín, Business Manager for REPSE Tour Operator, a company that serves 22% of Chilean tourists, stressed how great the news of the new campaign was for South America.

“This has been a wonderful surprise because I think the Chilean tourist is in a very good economic position with an ‘aspiring’ middle class. They have already visited the same places two or three times and I think Vallarta-Nayarit offers the high standards they’re looking for in the big chain all-inclusive properties, which they prefer, but also much, much more,” he stated.

He also pointed out the importance of being able to train his staff well in order for them to let the Chilean traveler know that Vallarta-Nayarit isn’t simply all about luxury, but that it has its very own Mexican style and culture, which some see as a sister to that of Chile.

“Being in Mexico is an incredible sensation that one can practically breathe in here, something that doesn’t always happen in some of its other destinations. The city also offers an amazing gourmet cuisine; another surprising facet is its adventure and well-thought-out ecotourism offerings. It’s very organized, with a professional offering for each kind of traveler and all wrapped up in genuine warmth. To that I can add the possibility of so many watersports, whale watching, the sea turtles, the Marietas Islands… this should be a complete success,” added Martín.

He concluded by recommending the need to cultivate the fact that the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta may be together but they are each their own destination, each with its own charm. Another relevant aspect is that four thousand Chileans travel to Central and North America through incentive tourism, another segment that needs follow up.
