Every night, along Puerto Vallarta's Malecón, various nightclubs and entertainment venues come alive, featuring a relatively recent trend: the presence of dancers in cages. These are the "Gogo Dancers," using their rhythmic talent to energize the crowd.

It is intriguing to observe the role of dancers whose sole purpose is to motivate people to have a good time and be happy. Consequently, they have become an essential component of the atmosphere within these establishments.

However, it is important to acknowledge that this profession has its roots in the culturally and artistically rich spaces of privileged Europe. Although the term "Gogo Dancers" emerged in the 1960s, the activity traces back to the court of Louis XIV, who temporarily banned traditional dances and instead performed the spectacle himself. During intermissions, dancers were placed strategically around the salon, enriching the grand spectacle of the Sun King.

It was in the United States, following the 1960s, that the phenomenon of "Gogos" spread across America. These dancers were employed for a specific duration during the festivities to uplift the attendees, after which they would retreat. In New York, special platforms were created for them, and in some places, cages were set up to protect them from interference. Over time, these cages transformed into elevated platforms.

In 1991, an artwork called "Go-Go Dance Platform" was created by Félix González Torres, who passed away in 1996. The piece debuted in the Beyeler Fondation, featuring a dancer in a swimsuit performing improvised movements to music playing only through headphones. This performance took place on a platform within a room of an art museum that exhibited works by Pablo Picasso. The artwork raised important questions about the role of dance and art, highlighting their transformative capacity to alter a space through bodily presence alone.
