achavarAt age 76, legendary Chivas de Guadalajara player Salvador “chava” Reyes passed away after a battle with colon cancer in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Reyes passed away Saturday evening Dec. 29, 2012.

Chava is part of the “campeonisimo” Chivas team that won seven titles between the 1956-57 seasons and 1964-65 seasons. He is currently the highest scoring Chivas player in team history with 122 goals. He is considered to be one of the best players in Mexico’s most popular team, Chivas.

Aside from the league titles, he also won six Champion of Champions trophies and one Copa Mexico, predecessor to the current Copa MX. Reyes is one of five Chivas players who have won the league goal scoring title with Adalberto “Dumbo” Lopez, Mellone Gutierrez, Omar Bravo and current Manchester United forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. There was a 45 year gap between Reyes and Bravo winning the title.

Reyes spent the majority of his active player time with Chivas. He signed with the Los Angeles Toros of the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1967 before returning to Mexico to play with Laguna de Torreon and finally retiring with Atletico Potosino in 1972.

The legendary player returned to Chivas where he was part of the youth system that brought up players like Bravo and Hernandez to name a few.

In 2008, Chivas owner Jorge Vergara decided to hold homage to Reyes including him in the starting line-up against Pumas UNAM. Reyes took the initial kick of the game, sent the ball out of bounds and was substituted by his pupil Bravo.

Three FIFA World Cups

Reyes was part of the Mexican national team that participated in three FIFA World Cups. Mexico was eliminated in the first round of all three cups where Reyes played in all nine games. His first was at the Sweden 1958 games. This was followed by Chile 1962 where Mexico won their first game in the competition, a 3-1 victory over Czechoslovakia. His final participation came at the England 1966 games where Mexico managed to earn two draws.

Reyes will be missed as he was a very popular person within the Chivas organization.
