certificados.2.2Ten “M” (for “Moderniza,” in Spanish) seals of approval were distributed to local businesses, as well as 31 certificates for Hiking, 44 for Bartending, 23 in Service Quality and 15 in Guest Entertainment were handed out to students, transportation specialists and personnel from different hotels and restaurants.

The Riviera Nayarit is constantly striving to offer the best services possible, which is why on Wednesday February 12th, the Nayarit Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), presented the “M” (“Moderniza”) seal of approval to 10 businesses on behalf of the Federation.

The seal of approval was presented to: Bambú Naturals, Mariscos El Coleguita, Rancho Banderas, Café Des Artistes, Ikuai Restaurant, Raixes Restaurant Bar, El Chivero Restaurant, Osos Oister Bar and Sandzibar Restaurant Bar.

Besides the “M” seals, the Federation handed out 31 certificates for Hiking, 44 for Bartending, 23 for Service Quality, and 15 in Guest Entertainment among students, transportation specialists, and hotel and restaurant personnel.

These updates were part of the actions undertaken by the department of Improvement of Service Quality from the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), which helped coordinate the process from the beginning through to the tallying of the results.

“This is just an example of the quality of services present in the Riviera Nayarit and throughout the state of Nayarit,” said Marc Murphy, Managing Director for the CVB. “We’re one of the destinations with the most certifications at a national level, and not just on the beach.”

These certificates don’t simply adorn a wall—they prove themselves on a daily basis when the service provider attends to the tourist.

“Employees with the correct training have more possibilities of being hired and of obtaining better positions, this is what the Governor is looking for,” added Rodrigo Pérez, the Secretary of Tourism. “This will in turn be reflected in the tourism providers’ bottom line and that of their families.”

“Tourism in the Riviera Nayarit is the tip of the iceberg. The impetus for the Riviera Nayarit to become a top tourism producer in Mexico comes from president Enrique Peña Nieto and governor Roberto Sandoval, and the only way to make it happen is to keep training our personnel in the transportation, tourism service, restaurant and hotel categories,” added the Secretary.

travelThe St Regis Punta Mita Resort, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit and the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita are classified among the best hotels in the world, the best resorts in Mexico and the best family hotels in Mexico.

Every year the prestigious New York-based magazine, Travel + Leisure publishes its classifications of the best hotels in the world within different categories. There’s no doubt the Riviera Nayarit is making its presence felt.

Travel + Leisure’s monthly publication has a readership of 4.8 million. It was founded in 1971 under its current name though it was being produced since 1937 under the name U.S. Camera and Travel. It has editions in eight different countries, including Mexico.

The list of the “World’s Best Hotels 2013” looks at 50 of the top resorts around the globe: the St Regis Punta Mita resort occupies position number 45.

Its sweeping Pacific Views, proximity to the Marietas Islands, two Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses, junior suites with private terraces and more validate the choice.

“Part of the appeal of this Mediterranean-inspired property on the Riviera Nayarit is its small scale: with just 120 rooms, the 1,500-acre retreat feels intimate,” said the article.

The “Top Resorts of Mexico” picks out the top 25 in the country; the St Regis Punta Mita Resort occupies the 3rd position, followed by the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit in 10th place and the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita in the 17th spot.

All four resorts are ideal for family visits. The Four Seasons was singled out for the 2nd position on the list of “Top Family Hotels in Mexico.”

Travel + Leisure is one of the most important tourism publications in the world, which is why the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau usually invites this medium when organizing FAM trips to the destination.

playa-de-simon-a-las-afuerasThis time the international guide www.societeperrier.com recommends Platanitos and the Marietas Islands among its “five beaches to discover on the Pacific coast” of Mexico.

A new recommendation for the beaches of the Riviera Nayarit is circulating throughout the Internet! This time the kudos come from the website www.societeperrier.com, which focuses on international music, art, travel, nightlife, cocktail culture, mixology, fashion and global interests.

The article, written by Edna Pedraza—designer, fashion coordinator, contributor to MEOW and editor of Société Perrier Mexico—, extended an invitation to “five beaches to discover on the Pacific Coast.” The list includes Platanitos and the Marietas Islands, both in the Riviera Nayarit.

“On this occasion we’d like to mention five tropical paradises that aren’t as well known. They’re bathed by the warm waters of the largest ocean in the world, but we have to warn you that to get to some of these beaches you’ll have to work it like Indiana Jones,” said the article.

“The Marietas Islands are made up of two islands and two islets surrounded by natural rock formations that seem to encapsulate the turquoise-tinted water. It’s as if they wanted to keep this place a secret only for those brave enough to uncover its treasures,” it continues.

“The treasures consist of coral, blue-footed boobies, bottle nosed dolphins, a fantastic variety of marine birds and, of course, fish, plus giant manta rays, Olive Ridley turtles and even humpback whales.”

It also mentions a protected area that encourages adventure and exploration via scuba or snorkel, where visitors can even practice their mountain climbing skills!

Regarding Platanitos, it waxes eloquent about its calm waters that allow swimmers to remain in the water without having to worry about jumping any big waves.

Author Edna Pedraza continues: “Located some 25 km from Las Varas and about 30 km from San Blas, the it greets you with its very fine sand beach framed by dense vegetation. Here you’ll find turtles and trails to take you to the Cora and Tecuitata waterfalls. It’s the perfect combination for nature lovers in search of total relaxation.”

The beaches of Michigan in Guerrero, Playa Mermejita in Oaxaca and La Llorona in Michoacán round out the list.

This website has more than half a million followers on Facebook. It’s part of one of the world’s most famous brands of mineral water. The global site is published in over 10 countries, with readership in many more.

This article is just one more example of the growing interest of the world at large in Mexico’s Pacific Treasure.

carlwwineHigh income tourism is experiencing a gradual recovery in the Punta Mita zone, which signals a notable improvement this year.

The general director of the hotel St. Regis, Carl Emberson, assured that in what has passed of this winter season there are better results with respect to high income tourism, both in the hotel that he manages and in the Four Seasons hotel.

He said that he has noted in the last months a gradual recovery of the so called luxury tourism that the zone receives from the hotels St. Regis and Four Seasons.

He stressed that better occupation percentages have been achieved during the winter season and that everything seems to indicate that the tendency is towards consolidating an important touristic improvement.

On the other hand, Carl Emberson reported that the fourth edition of "Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf Classic 2014" is already sold and the one of this year could be the best one, given that it is about an event created so that the participants can enjoy the best local and international food and wine, besides the world class golf in Punta Mita, Riviera Nayarit.

It should be noted that Emberson has been the golf companion of the president Enrique Peña Nieto during the visits he has made to Riviera Nayarit and in which he has stayed, together with all of his family, in the hotel St. Regis.

It should also be said that, born in the Fiji Islands andof Austrialian nationality, Carl Emberson has been an enthusiast of the hotel industry in Latin America, where more than 25 years of experience back up his work among countries such as Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, where he is currently the exclusive director of the hotel St. Regis Punta Mita, located in the Riviera Nayarit.

In fact, this is the second chance of Emberson of working in Mexico, as in the late 90's he dedicated two years to being a manager of the hotel Hyatt of Acapulco. Later he went to Brazil, but destiny brought him back to the Mexican Pacific coast to work with the luxury hotel firm of Starwood.

"It is a privilege to work in a high level destination and above all in a property where the guest feels safe with the privacy and exclusivity that is characteristic of Punta Mita", declared the hotelier.

The hotel career of Carl has been successful thanks to the fact that he has been a driver of the destinations in which he has resided by means of different jobs in favor of tourism.

For example, in Sao Paolo Brazil he was the creator of the Paladar Cozinha do Brasil, event which now continues in its 5th edition; in Mendoza Argentina he was the author of Masters of Food and wine which for this 2012 celebrated nine years of success.

"Our edition of torneo de Golf Punta Mita is gaining strength because it includes the best players of this sport, without a doubt it has benefits for the hotels of the zone and the destination; furthermore we have an excellent relation with our neighbors of the Four Seasons, as together we will promote the Punta Mita destination, it is an example of believing in our destination and doing things for it, besides working for the company that we represent".

THE DATA: More than 25 years of experience back up the work of Carl Emberson in countries such as Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, where he is currently the exclusive manager of the hotel

slideshow.1The Marina Riviera Nayarit boasts 18 thousand square meters, 354 slips, docks that hold vessels from 31 to 400 feet in length, a dry dock capacity for boats weighing up to 150 tons, a slew of services and the ability to host international events—and that's only 30 percent of what will be a very, very grand 100 percent when the project is finished.

The Marina Riviera Nayarit was already considered the biggest and most modern on the Mexico Pacific back when it was built in 2007 thanks to its services and capacities, not to mention the geographical and biological blessings Mother Nature heaped upon its bay. Indeed, it lived up to its slogan of “El sueño hecho marina,” loosely translated to mean the “marina that dreams are made of.”

It was Mexican engineer Pedro Fernández’s dream to develop a marina that would turn the destination into an icon of nautical tourism, much like the Riviera Nayarit is already a leader in beach tourism. Today it’s a reality according to Harbor Master Rafael Alcántara.

Its more than 18 thousand square meters of construction both on land and water make it the largest in the Mexican Pacific.

“We have 354 slips and docks that range from 31 feet for smaller boats all the way to 400 feet,” he said.

The largest marina in the country is in Cancún, with five additional docks, but as far as capacity for larger vessels, the Marina Riviera Nayarit has it beat.

“We are the only marina with a dry dock that has such a large lift,” added Alcántara. “We can lift vessels up to 150 tons in weight, these are the ones that are up to 100 feet in length.”

The marina services include a fueling dock, commercial lots, the Port Authority building, the Environmental and Natural Resources Department, a marine shop, three sailing schools, three restaurants and a seafood market, which showcases the daily catch brought in by the fishermen of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle who still make their living out on the water.

Currently the Marina is only operating at 30 percent of what the complete development will encompass, as there are areas designated for hotels and condos.

It has already hosted events such as the Bicentennial Edition of the Mexico Cup Regatta, which will celebrate its 2014 edition in March. It will also play host to the 2nd Latin American Boat Show and fishing tournaments; it’s the site of the largest ever marlin capture on record for the Bay at 325 kg.

The Harbor Master assured that it has the capacity to dock cruise ships but to date has only hosted private vessels as opposed to commercial ones, so they are currently missing a special dock to generate maritime tourism.

“The Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau has always been focused on the events we’ve hosted in order to promote them,” said Rafael Alcántara. “This is a big plus for the Riviera Nayarit, because when we receive FAM trips and VIPs, we are one more shining jewel in the crown of a destination that has so many beautiful things to offer.”

nayarit-world-class-destinationThe secretary of Tourism of Nayarit, Raúl Rodrigo Pérez, revealed that during 2014 Vallarta-Nayarit will be promoted at an international level; "the governor Roberto Sandoval obtained 200 million pesos for Costa Capomo, an integrally planned center, and the installation of new hotels that are going to generate more visitors. Of course, the Vallarta-Nayarit promotion, which is resonating in all the world, will continue in a constant way; furthermore, there will be new flights from Panamá and all of Southamerica, Europe, United States and Canada".

He detailed that as the tourism in Nayarit increases, the families of the state will have a better life style, "then we will increase the figures more, generate more development, which is the main objective of the Governor because all investment in tourism has to mean improvements in the family economy".

Raúl Rodrigo Pérez, pointed out that "the business man Bill Gates, who bought the Four Seasons, is making investments in the Hotel, in a new Spa which will be one of the most modern in Mexico; besides, he bought two properties in Punta de Mita".

fitur.1.1This is the sixth consecutive year that delegates from the Riviera Nayarit, headed by Raúl Rodrigo Pérez, Secretary of Tourism for the State of Nayarit, participate in Spain’s most important tourism fair.

The Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), led by Raúl Rodrigo Pérez, Secretary of Tourism for the State of Nayarit, is attending Spain’s most important tourism fair for the sixth year in a row, to be held in Madrid January 22 – 26.

The International Tourism Fair (FITUR by its acronym in Spanish) will host the delegates from Nayarit, who will bring with them the traditional Ballet Mexcaltitlán and Don Modesto Rivera, the renowned Huichol artisan.

This is the 34th edition of this prestigious event, where tourism professionals from around the world come together under one roof. FITUR is by far the top event for inbound and outbound markets in Latin America.

Last year, FITUR welcomed some nine thousand exhibitors from 167 countries, with more than 100 thousand participants and a little less than 100 thousand general public attendees.

The Spanish media has been circulating a communiqué released by the public relations office of Grupo Albion on behalf of the Riviera Nayarit CVB detailing the participation of the destination in this international event. It has already been published in Europa Press, Diario Barcelona, Noticias de Málaga, among others.

Presence in Mexico’s Grand Event and in the 7th annual Exceltur Forum

Mexico’s Federal Office of Tourism and the Mexico Tourism Board invited the delegation from Nayarit to attend Mexico’s Grand Event the evening before the Fair begins.

Taking advantage of their tour to Spain, the delegation will also be present at the 7th annual Exceltur Forum; this year’s theme is: “Tourism: A Key Driver to Support the Country Brand.” Organized by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in collaboration with FITUR and Turespaña, this forum includes the top tourism leaders in both the public and private sectors.

signs-of-economic-recoveryTo develop the tourism culture of the Vallartans it is very important to backup the results of the promotion campaigns that are being made. To offer a quality service with warmth, good attention, kind treatment to visitors and show that Puerto Vallarta has a sense of hospitality above what can be received in any other destination; are priority elements so that this destination stands out and all of us are better off.

The hotelier Luis Angarita Mayorga, commented to Vallarta Opina that there are clear sings of a tourism recovery process in the city, which can accelerate and empower with an integral participation not only those who directly deal with tourists but also generate a good attitude in all the sectors.

It is very important that the inhabitants of the city help us with their attitude, " this is a call to the youngsters to have a greater control of their alcohol consumption, that the peddlers don't abuse the tourists, that the taxi drivers have a greater conscience of their role, that the individual personnel, the maids and the waiters, should all develop a magnificent attitude.

"The tourism culture is reflected in all the city, it is very important that all the people in Vallarta contribute to have a better place, in this way we will be in better living conditions and have a greater tourism competence".

The hotelier said that the municipal government is fulfilling its part, as it can be seen in the Ingreso avenue, "work is being done in the median strips of our avenue, in the vicinity of the airport, and in the center of the city, it is all a virtuous circle, if the hotels have greater occupancy rates, we will all have more income and we will pay more taxes".

Promising Horizon

The economic impact that we will have in these first four months of the year will be very good, he said, this favors that there is no unemployment in the tourism sector, there shouldn't be the calamities we had from 2009 to 2011 because we are in a very important sustained recovery process.

"We feel very proud to announce to the touristic community that in 2014 there will surely be a greater occupancy and that therefore in this year there will be a greater income; the economic situation in the United States is favoring us and the actions of the Tourism Trust Fund with the support of the federal, state and municipal governments, which will bring good results".

The manager of the hotel Velas Vallarta declared that now we have to work very hard so that good vacation periods arrive like Holy Week, Easter and summer with the national tourism that has been very strong, and prepare the second semester of 2014.

Work has been done in an integral way so that 2014 is a better year and so that in 2015 we have better numbers than in 2014, "this is a process and there are several cycles in the economic and touristic activity, now it is our turn to go up again, but we have to be prepared to take advantage of it and take care that the visitors leave happy, which is the best way for them to come back.

About the promotion campaign of the Vallarta-Nayarit brand, he said that results can already be seen this winter, "there is a growth in the number of tourists, they tell us that they want to make tours by the bay, that is to say, they come with the information that it is a touristic corridor".

THE TIP:

The economic impact these first four months of the year will be very good, favoring a decrease in the unemployment of the tourism sector in these dates.

dragon.2La Peñita will offer visitors an Art Walk every Wednesday through Holy Week starting on January 22nd, while Guayabitos will celebrate its 9th Cultural Arts Festival every Saturday in February.

The magic of the Riviera Nayarit’s coastal towns is one of region’s many highlights. Part of that magic is generated by the cultural tourism that takes place in La Peñita de Jaltemba and Guayabitos, namely the Art Walk and the 9th Cultural Arts Festival, which draw locals as well as national and international tourists.

The first ever Art Walk is taking place just in time to inaugurate the new Peñita de Jaltemba boardwalk. This series of artists’ presentations will occur every Wednesday starting on January 22nd at 5 p.m. sharp.

The activity will continue through Holy Week according to Rossanna Araujo Silver, president of the Compostela Hotel and Motel Association, who also commented that the Malecón, or boardwalk, is completely finished.

“We’ll have the participation of painters, photographers, artisans and jewelers. This event is very welcomed as the boardwalk is fully open and the people were anxious to enjoy something as lovely as this,” she added.

Araujo also announced that the preparations were well underway for the 9th Cultural Arts Festival in Guayabitos. This event will be celebrated every Saturday in February, beginning on the 1st.

Every evening at 8 p.m. sharp the central plaza in Guayabitos will play host to folklore, music, dance and other artistic expressions.

“This festival was started 9 years ago in order to attract more foreign visitors. Now it’s become a tradition and our hotels are filled to capacity,” said Araujo.

The first Saturday will kick off with a Mexican theme, including mariachi, floreadas (cowboy rope tricks) and an equestrian event. Xavi Rodríguez from the Dragon Circus will perform on February 8th; on the 15th the Violines Internacionales Hermanos Aguascalientes will fill the night with the sound of their violins; and on the last night, the 22nd, guests will enjoy the Mexcalititlán Ballet and the Cantabo Mordi Children’s Choir.

Araujo also stated there is a greater influx of international tourists over nationals to these events that highlight the traditions and culture of the coastal towns. They expect both the Festival—already a yearly tradition—and the newly inaugurated Art Walk to bring in an increase in tourism to the area as well as an increase in income for the exhibitors and the area’s businesses.

recuWith a renewed formal commitment to making all the efforts that are necessary to maintain the unit in the hotel sector and work together in business, commercial and restaurant businessman, protest last night took the officers of the Association of Hotels and Motels in Puerto Vallarta, which is headed by Ignacio Chain Beraud, for a further period of one year.

We restarted, said the hotelier before a select audience gathered in the beautiful Hacienda de Los Santos in Marina Vallarta, full of desire, of substance, of authenticity and commitment; and he added: "we are all Vallarta and today we are celebrating in this meeting with friends the beginning of a new council for the development and improvement of Puerto Vallarta".

We need, must be the leader hotel, success in the tourism activity to ensure a better distribution of income among all of Vallarta, "so soon we are going to start with a unit in the search for better conditions for all in this new year of work".

The president of the hoteliers in the city appreciated the presence of the secretary-general of the Government of Jalisco, Arturo Zamora Jimenez, asked him to tell the governor that "the hoteliers and tourim are letting him know that they can't wait for that level of tourism that we had come back". And thanked him for not only the works that the state government is doing in the city "but the affection he felt as a governor on this port".

Common Denominator

"We had a board meeting last week, all and each of the above-mentioned persons have a responsibility and they will meet its goal; there can be no doubt that the hotel is a factor of development and the first contact with travel agents and markets, so we have a great responsibility".

Assured that it will have to strengthen the promotion in the different markets, especially in the most representative, so we can return to the levels of tourism that has had in previous years, "the resurgence of Puerto Vallarta is a work of all, not only of the hoteliers, restaurateurs, taxi drivers, this includes even the housewives that with the cleanliness of their benches and facades give charisma to Puerto Vallarta".

To his fellow leaders of associations and chambers of commerce, asked them to make the team for Vallarta, "I have to say that the hotel we are with you and open to the propositions, also to the criticism and to the comments and the possibility to undertake joint projects that we can lead to a better success hotelier, restaurant businessman and commercial, which will benefit all those who live in this paradise".

The members of the new board are: Ignacio Chain Beraud, president, Enrique Carothers Barreto, Commissioner; Ricardo Bulnes, secretary; Gerardo Silveti, treasurer; and the trustees María José Zorrilla Alcalá, Liny Cornejo, Marcelo Alcaraz, Felipe Rangel, Mauricio Martínez, Rodolfo Pacheco, Demetrio Mature, Eduardo Ballesteros, Luis Rodriguez and Antonio Robles.

La-mano-de-Bill-Gates-en-Four-Seasons-Punta-Mita-400x300The hotel will have one of the best spas in Mexico and they will substitute the traditional lobby for a Sunset Bar.

Now that Cascade Investment, owned by Bill Gates, has purchased the Four Seasons Punta Mita, the resident manager of the hotel, José Adames, is ready to share the news on what’s next for this exquisite resort.

There are two main projects on the table: one of the best spas in Mexico and a Sunset Bar in place of the traditional lobby.

“The first project will be the spa, as it’s something that had already been started under the previous owners,” said Adames. “The current owner, Mr. Gates, is convinced that the area should be completely redone. We’d like to finish it by 2014 and begin the holiday season by opening one of the best spas in all of Mexico.”

The start date is tentatively set for April for completion in November; the investment will be between four and six million dollars.

Another distinctive feature of this multi-million dollar upgrade will be the transformation of the traditional lobby into a Sunset Bar, which will give the Four Seasons Punta Mita the distinction of being the first and only hotel in this worldwide chain to have no reception area and no concierge.

“All of the interactions will be highly personalized, centered around the guest in the lobby chairs; we’ll be getting rid of those ‘reception desk’ barriers that have been an integral part of every hotel since the beginning of time,” explained the Resident Manager.

The project is currently in the planning and design phase; the proposed start date is sometime during the summer but nothing has been set as of yet, as the purchase transaction itself still needs to be finalized. This part of the project will see a three million dollar investment.

This hotel in Punta Mita, part of a very prestigious chain founded by Canadian Isadore Sharp, has kept its high standards of quality and service during the ten years that it has enjoyed its special Five Diamond category.

“There’s no doubt this has been a great success for the Riviera Nayarit,” said Adames. “We hope that it will focus more attention on this area and encourage other investors to have increased confidence in our destination.”
