Sectur evaluates 44 tourism destinations

tourism-evaluationThe Ministry of Tourism of the government of the Republic elaborates, in coordination with the state ministries of Tourism and institutes of higher education, 44 competitiveness agendas of the main tourism destinations with the purpose of driving innovation and elevating the competitiveness of the sector.

With these instruments of evaluation there is a search to promote a greater flux of tourists and investments, with the end of converting touristic activity into a leverage of economic development and employment generation, which benefits each region of the country.

This is done as part of the National Tourism Policy announced by President Enrique Pena Nieto, the month of February, in the Riviera Nayarit.

Competitiveness Agendas are an analytical tool that will diagnose the situation being experienced by tourist destinations in the country, with the purpose of augmenting the attractions they offer.

Moreover, it will have a portfolio of projects to be financed in future years by the Coordination Conventions of the Sectur, or supported with alternative financing schemes. They can also be the basis for the presentation of infrastructure projects.

The destinations to diagnose are: Acapulco, Aguascalientes, Ciudad Juárez, Campeche, Cancún, Chalma, Ciudad de México, Cozumel, Cuernavaca, Durango, Ensenada, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Huatulco, Ixtapa–Zihuatanejo, Ixtapan de la Sal, León, Los Cabos, Manzanillo, Mazatlán and Mérida.

Also in the list are Morelia, Monterrey, Riviera Nayarit, Oaxaca, Pachuca, Puebla, Puerto Vallarta, Querétaro, Riviera Maya, San Juan de Los Lagos, San Luis Potosí, San Miguel de Allende, Tampico-Madero, Tijuana, Tlacotalpan, Tlaxcala, Torreón, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Veracruz-Boca del Río, Villahermosa, Xalapa and Zacatecas.

The agendas of competitiveness, in which higher education institutions actively participate in the country, seeking to strengthen research and knowledge generation of tourism, the quality of products and services in tourism, as well as diversify and innovate product offerings and strengthen destinations.

The Ministry of Tourism coordinates, monitors and evaluates the implementation of the Agenda for Competitiveness, so that there is consistency with the National Tourism Policy.

Another objective of competitiveness agendas is to position Mexico as an attractive destination in underdeveloped segments such as cultural tourism, ecotourism and adventure, health, sports, luxury, business and meetings, and religion.
