July 20: Let's All Play Chess

Chess is a strategy game that originated in India around the 6th century, originally known as "chaturanga." This ancient game was played on an 8x8 board and had rules similar to modern chess. From India, the game spread to Persia, where it was called "shatranj." After the conquest of Persia by the Arabs, chess spread to the Islamic world, gaining popularity in many regions. During the Middle Ages, chess reached Europe through the Iberian Peninsula, introduced by the Moors during their incursions into Spain. In Europe, the game underwent various modifications in its rules and the design of the pieces, adapting to local cultures. During the Renaissance, chess established itself as a game of nobility and became an integral part of education and entertainment in royal courts.

In the 15th century, the rules of modern chess began to take shape in Italy and Spain, including the movement of the queen and the pawn. The invention of the printing press allowed the dissemination of chess manuals, further popularizing the game. In the 19th century, chess became professionalized with the creation of chess clubs, tournaments, and official championships, laying the foundation for the competitive chess we know today. Chess arrived in America with European settlers. In the United States, chess clubs were established in cities like New York and Philadelphia during the 19th century. The first official chess championship in the United States was held in 1845. The popularity of chess in America grew significantly during the 20th century, especially after Bobby Fischer's victory in the 1972 World Chess Championship.

Chess was introduced in Mexico during the colonial period by the Spanish. Over the centuries, the game has been popular among various communities, including students, academics, and enthusiasts. Mexico has produced several grandmasters and has hosted renowned international tournaments. Chess is taught in many schools as part of the educational curriculum, fostering the development of cognitive and strategic skills. Puerto Vallarta, a coastal city in the state of Jalisco, has embraced chess as an important part of its culture and community. Through local clubs, schools, and community events, chess has become a popular activity for both young and old. The city has hosted tournaments and exhibitions, attracting players of different levels and promoting interest in the game.
