  Mexico's Freedom Trail

.......... By JONATHAN KANDELL The New York Times
Published: August 19, 2010

MY earliest political memory is of an elementary-school trip five decades ago to the Angel of Independence, the golden winged statue atop a soaring marble column in the heart of Mexico City, where my parents had recently moved from New York. Though I can’t remember the exact year of the outing, it was certainly on Sept. 16, the day Mexico celebrates the beginning of its long War of Independence (1810-21) from three centuries of Spanish colonial rule.

  THE NEW GLOBAL ECONOMIC REALITY
  Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010
.......... Mexico: A better economic choice than China Another large exodus from the U.S.A is high paying skilled jobs. The job shift in automobile sector, both car and parts manufacturing, is already known by most investors. In the last few months as John Deere and Caterpillar have been laying off thousands of workers in the U.S.A., and hiring equal numbers in Mexico. The most recent industry that is making the shift is the aerospace manufacturers. In the city of Zacatecas there is currently a $210 million aerospace facility being built. With the 11 U.S. companies moving there, it is estimated to provide over 200,000 new high paying jobs in the coming years. One of the main factors for the shift in job south to Mexico instead of China is realistic analysis of total production, labor and delivery costs. While the labor costs in China are 40% less on average, the overall transportation costs and inherent risks of a long distance supply chain, and quality control issues, gives Mexico a distinct financial advantage.

You would have to be living on another planet to avoid hearing how dangerous Mexico has become, and, yes, it’s true drug wars have escalated violence in Mexico , causing collateral damage, a phrase I hate. Collateral damage is a cheap way of saying that innocent people, some of them tourists, have been robbed, hurt or killed.

  Getting a Mexican Driver's License
  Sunday, May 4th, 2008
.......... By Wendy Wilson

Living a life in a foreign country does have its challenges. Recently, I realized that my California driver’s license was about to expire, and, due to a new law to presumably protect the world from my terrorism, I had to physically show up at the DMV to renew it. What is an ex-pat to do? Spend mucho dinero to get to the nearest California airport (San Diego), spend a night or two in a motel, rent a car, dine out, etc., or get a Mexican license? The best option became instantly clear. And so, as with my new visa status that brings me as close to being a Mexican as an American citizen can be and still collect social security, I chose to become even more Mexicanized.

Riding in the Foothills of the Sierra Madres above Vallarta
  Monday, April 28th, 2008
..........
By Sally Newall

Though a life-long horse lover, I have always been a ‘riding for fun’ type of girl rather than a skilled horsewoman. So when the opportunity arose to swap sunbathing for a morning’s riding, I jumped at the chance, but not without trepidation. I had never tried Western style riding before, although I’ll admit I always thought it looked like the easy option, compared to its more formal English cousin. I was about to find out.

.......... A heartfelt request for any golfing related items

Alfredo Cervantes (known as Charlie to his Gringo friends) has a passion for golf and for teaching. A native of Mexico, Alfredo and his young family returned to Puerto Vallarta after 17 years of living in Southern California. Shortly after returning to the city that he loved in 1997, a tragic head-on collision with a local Vallarta bus occurred, and forever changed Alfredo’s life. Alfredo awoke from a 42 day coma to learn that his 11 & 14 year old boys and golfing partners were killed. His wife was severely injured as well and his hopes and dreams were shattered. Golf he says "is the only thing that takes my mind off of the pain."

AN "INTERESTING EXPERIENCE" ON VALLARTA BUSES
  Tuesday, April 1st, 2008
.......... I come from London, a city where buses have a 30 to 40 minute frequency and often, even that depends on luck.

It costs 40 pesos to get from one stop to another, regardless if that stop is just 10 minutes down the road. Therefore, when I came to Puerto Vallarta, I was astonished at how comparatively cheap the buses were and even more so, to find that tourists rarely used them. At a cost of 5.50 Pesos to any destination and a 5 to 10 minute wait at the stop, these buses seem to be the answer to a Londoner's problems and we should not forget the ease with which these buses can be used: with an option of either 'Tunel' or 'Centro,' it is difficult to get lost in small Puerto Vallarta.

Well, I will try my best to help you make this stroke a more enjoyable experience, with 2 more checkpoints to add to your list from the previous articles.   Home Financing Now Available in Mexico
  Monday, July 31st, 2006
.......... By Doug Jones ©2006

The dream of owning a home in Mexico is on the minds of more and more North Americans, as they experience all the natural beauty and rich culture this country south-of-the-border has to offer. Many North Americans are looking for a place where they can make their retirement nest-egg stretch further than where they currently live. The cost of living in Mexico is definitely much less expensive than where you may presently call home – with one caveat. This is true once you have your housing expenses figured out. Real estate is rapidly increasing in cost/value. This is good if you already own a home in Mexico, and a reason to act quickly if you don’t.

  Spanish-Language Shows
  Wednesday, June 21st, 2006
.......... By Ed Hutmacher

With all that's happening at Santa Barbara, it sure doesn’t seem like the slow season. In addition to celebrating the debut of yet another Spanish-language production last week, called Circo, Maroma y Teatro, I’m thrilled to report that Solomon Rose and Kathy Overly will return next season with two new blockbuster shows, An Evening at La Cage aux Folles and The Legend of Dick and Liz.
As many Vallarta theatergoers know, I’m dedicated to bringing Spanish-language Theater to Santa Barbara and recruited the talented directing team of Federico Fonseca and Paul Guerrero (the dynamic duo behind our hit show Nunsense--On Vacation in Vallarta) to put together shows in Spanish.
In April we rolled out Al Cine, Que Horror!, a musical comedy with a satirical take on the zany movie business. It’s a fun show with a marvelous cast, filled with clever dialogue, engaging dance routines and hilarious set-ups. Audiences are loving it.
To keep the momentum going we added Circo, Maroma y Teatro to our summer line-up. Geared toward kids of all ages, Circo Maroma features music from the Broadway hit Godspell and affirms the value of friendship and living joyfully. An energetic cast of six young men and women dance and sing and laugh their way through humorous scenes that bring out the playful child in all of us. Its premiere last week packed the house.
While much remains to be seen on how well Spanish-language Theater plays out over the long-haul at Santa Barbara, there’s no mystery to the powerful punch Solomon Rose delivers on stage. His performances last season in Stop The World, I Want To Get Off and Vaudeville Vallarta were sensational.
For over a year Solomon has been cultivating the idea of staging La Cage aux Folles, the boisterous musical comedy that turned family values upside down. But typical of his visionary zeal, Solomon imagined something more than a revival of the hit Broadway show, something that paid homage to the tradition of the French cabaret—song, dance, glamour and that edgy, sassy celebration of the Diva. And gender blending!
“Imagine Victor Victoria meets La Cage aux Folles,” Solomon explained. “There’s fabulous dialogue, spectacular costumes and fantastic music and dance. And the set-ups! Is he a she, she a he?”
In addition to a glamorous chorus line, joining Solomon will be another popular entertainer, Kathy Overly, who co-starred with Sol in the multi-media production of A Night With The Phantom last season. As with most of Sol’s shows, you can be sure of some surprises. With personal friendships built over the years, from Hollywood to Broadway, Sol teased that “celebrity guests” will be making special appearances from time to time. An Evening at La Cage aux Folles will premiere November 18, 2006.
On a personal note, Sol and I are working together on a show about the most amazing of all show-biz couples, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, called The Legend of Dick and Liz. Whether on the big screen or in real life, Burton and Taylor turned heads during their heyday, and turned Puerto Vallarta into a famous tourist town when they decided to make Casa Kimberly up in Gringo Gulch their home away from home. The Legend of Dick and Liz will premiere in January.
Now playing at the Santa Barbara Theater: Al Cine, Que Horror! on Friday nights at 9:00 pm.

Vallarta Benefit Planned for Sunday at Trio
  Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006
.......... Painter Philippo LoGrande Out of Surgery

Philippo Lo Grande, a longtime Yelapa artist known to
thousands of residents, visitors, and admirers of his paintings, was seriously injured in a fall in Puerto Vallarta two weeks ago and underwent spinal surgery this past Monday at CMQ Hospital.

The surgery cost $90,000 pesos, according to
LoGrande who was released a day later. "I'm feeling
much, much better, better than I have for a long
time," he said yesterday from his apartment in Gringo
Gulch, where he had fallen and lay for hours before
being found.

Yelepans responded with a 100-peso spaghetti dinner
benefit at the Passion Flower Garden, yesterday, at 6
p.m. Other donations may be made locally to Rita
Zanoni or April Jones; call 209-5183 (from the U. S.
call 011-52-322-209-5183).

Readers with PayPal accounts may also make donations
online by going to the PayPal site www.paypal.com and
making a payment to Cliff Barney's PayPal account.
PayPal donations may be charged to a credit card.

Philippo was instrumental several years ago in
setting up Bambú, a fund to help artists who are
injured or ill. It now appears that he may be one of
the first beneficiaries of the fund he helped create.
However, Bambú will not cover expenses of the type
Philippo is now incurring, and donations are urgently requested.

A Benefit here in Puerto Vallarta for Philippo
LoGrande is planned for this Sunday, Feb. 26, at Trio Restaurant, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Local artists are donating works for auction, and a 100 peso donation includes open bar and tasty snacks. RSVP at 223-2179. Organizer Judith Ewing Morlan said yesterday that some "fifteen or more artists have responded, and we'll have several works by Philippo himself for auction."

  A Magnificent Director,Producer,and Actress
  Friday, February 10th, 2006
.......... When I first met Eileen O’Leary we were both involved in what was the first adult English speaking theatre to be presented in Puerto Vallarta. The play was “Everybody Loves Opal”, and it was being presented in the IFC clubhouse. I was a member of the cast, and she was the assistant stage manager. At that time I had no idea what a talented lady she really was. I found out very quickly after working with her for three weeks in that first play.
The actors who were in that first play and Eileen decided that they wanted to do more plays, so we formed Theatre Vallarta, and with Eileen as our director, we soon began working on another play. This play, a comedy farce was “Opening night”; and after much hard work both in finding a venue to perform in as well as on the play itself, they did open “Opening Night” at a art gallery downtown. Unfortunately, I had to bow out of that one because of illness.
After a brief time away in Canada, Eileen returned to Puerto Vallarta to produce and direct many other plays, this time as Dinner Theatre. To name just a few, “Arsenic and Old Lace”, “Play On”, “The Melville Boys”, “Two and Two Make Sex”, “The Mouse Trap”, and more.
Before finding this new venue, Eileen O’Leary tried several different restaurants here, some of which were very good, but not quite as well suited for dinner theatre as is the NHKrystal Hotel. The room is large, as is the stage, and the food is excellent. She opened here with a new name for this new location. Theatre Vallarta has become Theatre On the Bay. Her first play “BedFull Of Foreigners”, which she not only produced and directed, but acted in as well, got off to a slow start during the two weeks before Christmas, but came back with a “Big Bang” in January, with over 400 people attending the performances.
Eileen is now hard at work, putting together both “Love Letters”, which opens next Wednesday with that special preview performance for Pasitos de Luz, as well as “Deathtrap”, scheduled to open the first of March. This week, she is having both plays rehearsing one after the other. Since she is directing both, as well as gathering the necessary props, I don’t think she has much time left for sleep. But after next week, when “Love Letters” opens, she only will need to concentrate on “Deathtrap.” As I stated at the beginning of this article, Eileen O’Leary is not only one magnificent Director, but she is also an excellent actress as well.

A little bit of history of Humpback whale
  Saturday, January 14th, 2006
.......... By Griffin Page,

The earliest reports of whale sightings in the Bay of Banderas, date back to 1858 and mention the presence of mainly 2 species: the Humpback and the Grey whale. As a matter of fact, the bay was called Humpback Bay in the mid 1800's. Unfortunately, these reports come from log books of American whaling ships. Many species of whales were hunted from the mid 1800's to mid 1900's. The humpback suffered great losses due to his closeness to shores and his relatively slow speed. At the time, a lot of commerce depended on whale based products. It was hunted for meat, oil which they used in street lamps and machinery lubrication, and the baleens were used to make corsets so the ladies could display a perfect hourglass figure. In 1946, the International Whaling Commission was created to regulate whaling, but some nations didn't abide by the rules. Thankfully, a ban on all commercial whaling took effect in 1966 due to the growing public and scientific concern. It is estimated that the original population was numbered at around 100,000 individuals. By the 1960's, it had plummeted to a mere 6000 individuals. Today, the world's population is estimated to be between 10,000 and 20,000. The Humpback whale is still listed as endangered in the IUCN Red Data Book.

Recently a friend called me and wanted to know about a school he had heard about at the Mission:

“What school and what mission?” I know of only one Mission and they don’t have a school “was my reply. But then I thought about it, and realized that he must have been talking about the mission out at the City Dump which Pastor Bill and Renee Martin had started about 5 years ago.

  The Spectacular Humpback whale
  Saturday, January 7th, 2006
.......... By Griffin Page

Every year, the most acrobatic of all whales, the Humpback, visits the Bay of Banderas in order to reproduce and give birth. Its arrival begins around mid to late October and extends to around end of March. During that time, some female whales give birth while others reproduce before returning to their feeding grounds in the north.
